An affogato is one of the easiest dessert coffees to make well at home: cold ice cream, hot espresso, and a spoon. With Nespresso, the main decision is not complicated equipment. It is choosing a coffee base strong enough to cut through the sweetness without turning the dessert watery.
To make a Nespresso affogato, place one or two small scoops of vanilla gelato or ice cream in a chilled glass, brew one espresso-style capsule or pod separately, then pour the hot coffee over the ice cream just before serving. Original users should usually choose an espresso or ristretto-style capsule. Vertuo users should choose an espresso or double espresso pod rather than a large mug pod.
Affogato works best with a compact, aromatic coffee. Roasted, cocoa, nutty, cereal, caramel, or lightly spicy notes usually pair well with vanilla ice cream. Very delicate floral or fruity capsules can work, but they may disappear under rich dairy sweetness.
For one serving, use one espresso-style Nespresso capsule or Vertuo espresso pod, one or two small scoops of vanilla gelato or good vanilla ice cream, and optional toppings such as shaved dark chocolate, cocoa powder, crushed hazelnuts, or a tiny pinch of sea salt.
For a less sweet version, choose unsweetened whipped cream as a small topping instead of syrup. For a dairy-free version, use a plant-based vanilla dessert that you already enjoy on its own, because the coffee will make weak ice cream taste more obvious.
You need a Nespresso machine, a small glass or dessert cup, a spoon, and a small cup for brewing the espresso. A chilled glass helps the dessert stay structured for a little longer. If you use thin glassware, check that it can handle temperature changes before pouring hot coffee over cold ice cream.
1. Chill the cup. Put the serving glass in the freezer for a few minutes while you prepare the coffee station.
2. Add the ice cream first. Use one or two small scoops rather than one huge scoop. Smaller scoops give more surface area, so the espresso coats them more evenly.
3. Brew the espresso separately. Brew into a small espresso cup, not directly over the ice cream. This gives you better control and avoids splashing.
4. Pour and serve immediately. Bring the dessert to the table, pour the espresso over the ice cream, and eat it while the edges are melting but the center is still cold.
5. Add toppings lightly. Affogato should not become a sundae. A little chocolate, cocoa, or nuts is enough.
Nespresso Original and Vertuo are separate systems, and their capsules are not interchangeable. Original is convenient for affogato because many capsules are espresso-focused. Vertuo can also work well when you choose espresso or double espresso pods. Large Vertuo mug pods can create too much liquid for a classic affogato. Do not assume third-party capsules work with Vertuo unless compatibility is clearly confirmed.
The biggest mistake is using too much coffee. Affogato is not iced coffee with ice cream; it is a dessert with a short espresso pour. Another mistake is adding too much syrup, which can hide the coffee. Also avoid preparing it too early. Once the espresso touches the ice cream, the texture changes fast.
### Can I make affogato with a lungo? You can, but it will be thinner and less classic. Espresso or ristretto-style coffee usually gives a better balance.
### Should the espresso be hot or cooled? Hot espresso is traditional because it melts the ice cream slightly. Brew separately, then pour just before serving.
### Can I use chocolate ice cream? Yes. Chocolate ice cream makes the dessert richer, but vanilla keeps the coffee flavor clearer.
