Canadian machines run on 120 V like US models, but warranty is handled in the country of purchase, so buy a Canadian listing. In Canada the same Nespresso machines are sold under the Breville and De'Longhi names; the coffee system is identical, so compare colour, bundle and price. The machine: CitiZ Platinum x Swarovski

The Swarovski edition is a CitiZ Platinum with a crystal-decorated side and a silver finish. Some European Nespresso sites list it at €299, with a promotion that discounts the machine when you buy a minimum number of Original capsules. Prices and offers differ by country, so check yours rather than relying on this figure.

Before you pay a premium for the decoration, confirm what is included and whether the specification and warranty match the standard model. The standard CitiZ Platinum adds hot water and Americano controls to the CitiZ, which our CitiZ vs CitiZ Platinum guide explains.

It is also a small Original machine. It does not take Vertuo capsules, and it has no built-in milk system, so milk drinks need a separate frother such as the Aeroccino.

The three limited-edition coffees

Crystal Spark Espresso is the classic of the three: Arabicas from Guatemala and Costa Rica with some Asian Robusta, described as having toasted cereal and cocoa notes with hints of caramel and subtle spice. It is sold as Crystal Spark Espresso for Original and as a Double Espresso for Vertuo.

Blueberry Cheesecake is a flavoured coffee described as jammy blueberry with cheesecake and caramel notes, made from Brazilian and Colombian Arabicas.

Hazelnut Brownie is a flavoured coffee with fudge brownie notes and roasted hazelnut aroma, from the same Brazilian and Colombian Arabica base.

The advent calendars

There is one calendar for Original machines and one for Vertuo. Both use the same pink box with numbered windows, and they are not interchangeable: a Vertuo calendar will not work in an Original machine, and the other way around.

Ornaments, cups and the travel mug

The crystal ornament comes in two shapes, one for each capsule system, and hangs from a ribbon. It is a decoration, so treat it as a gift rather than a coffee product.

The Pixie Cups are small double-wall stainless steel cups: the green one is sized for espresso and the pink one for lungo.

The green travel mug and its crystal-set holder complete the set. All of these items are about appearance and gifting, not better coffee.

When can you buy it?

Reports do not agree on one date. The advent calendars and some accessories went on sale first, ahead of the full collection, and the full festive collection was reported for late October, between October 19 and 23 depending on the source and the market. Check Nespresso's website or boutique for your country, because limited editions can sell out.

Who it suits, and who can skip it

It suits you if you want a distinctive gift, you already own the matching machine system and you like seasonal coffees. A decorated machine or an ornament is mostly about appearance, so decide whether the look is worth it to you.

You can skip it if you want the lowest cost per capsule or the best value in a machine. Limited editions can carry a premium for the design, so compare them with the standard machine and with ordinary capsules before you decide. Our gift guide covers other options.

Buying a limited edition safely

Limited editions attract resellers and look-alike listings. Buy from Nespresso's own site or boutiques, or from authorized retailers, check that the listing names the exact item and system, and compare it with the product page. Watch for sellers who offer a bundle you cannot match to Nespresso's own list.

2. Decide whether you want the decorated machine, the calendar or only the accessories.

3. Check the date for your country on Nespresso's site.

4. Compare the price of the limited item with the standard version and with ordinary capsules.
