Buy the Vertuo Next if you want every Vertuo size, including the 535 ml carafe, from a slim machine with a 1.1 L tank, and buy it with an Aeroccino if you drink lattes every week. The Premium and Deluxe trims brew exactly the same coffee, so choose them only if you like the finish; if you live alone and never brew carafes, the smaller Pop+ does the same daily cups.

Buying in Canada

Canadian machines run on 120 V like US models, but warranty is handled in the country of purchase, so buy a Canadian listing. In Canada the same Nespresso machines are sold under the Breville and De'Longhi names; the coffee system is identical, so compare colour, bundle and price. Our links open Amazon.ca with prices in Canadian dollars, and Best Buy Canada and Nespresso boutiques also stock them. Manuals and packaging are bilingual, English and French.

The Next sits in the middle of the current US Vertuo range, above the compact Pop+ and below the newer Vertuo Up. It is built by both Breville and De'Longhi, the machines are the same inside, and every version reads the barcode on each pod to set the size, so the only controls are the lid and one button.

It takes Vertuo pods only. Original capsules do not fit, so if you already have a cupboard of Original coffee, read Original vs Vertuo or Vertuo Next vs Essenza Mini before you buy.

Vertuo Next (standard)

Plain finish · 1.1 L · None · Black coffee, every cup size

Vertuo Next Premium or Deluxe

Every version brews espresso 40 ml, double espresso 80 ml, gran lungo 150 ml, mug 230 ml, Alto 12 to 14 oz (355 to 414 ml, depending on the pod generation) and carafe 535 ml. Heat-up is about 25 to 30 seconds, the used-pod container takes about 10 espresso or 6 mug pods, and a full tank serves 4 to 5 mugs or 2 carafes.

Vertuo Next solo: is the standard machine the one to buy?

Yes, for black coffee. The standard Next brews every size the Premium and Deluxe do, from the same 37 oz tank and with the same heat-up. The trims change materials and accents only, so the plain machine is where I would start.

The body is slim rather than small: about 5.6 in (14.2 cm) wide and 12.4 in (31.4 cm) tall, with listings giving the depth as about 15 to 17 in (37 to 43 cm) because the tank sits behind the brewing head. It slides into a narrow gap, but it needs a deep counter and room above for the lid to open.

The carafe is what sets it apart from the Pop+. One 18 oz pod fills a carafe, or two cups for a weekend breakfast, and the Next has the clearance to brew it. The machine also connects to the Nespresso app for software updates; you never need the app to brew.

WhichCapsule note: Black coffee in every size, carafes included: the standard Next. Premium or Deluxe only for the look.

Vertuo Next with Aeroccino: when is the bundle worth it?

When you drink milk drinks every week. The Aeroccino heats and foams milk, or whips it cold, in its own jug while the coffee brews, which covers cappuccinos, lattes and iced lattes without a second coffee machine.

The workflow is two steps: froth in the jug, brew a double espresso or gran lungo into the cup, then pour the milk over. The jug needs a rinse after every use; cleaning the Aeroccino covers the routine, and Aeroccino 3 vs Aeroccino 4 explains which frother a bundle includes.

If milk drinks are your main coffee every day, compare the integrated Vertuo Lattissima as well. Vertuo Next vs Vertuo Lattissima sets out the trade-off between one-touch milk and a separate frother.

WhichCapsule note: Weekly lattes: the Aeroccino bundle. Daily lattes with no second appliance: the Vertuo Lattissima.

Vertuo Next vs Pop+, Vertuo Up and VertuoPlus

The Vertuo Pop+ is smaller, with a tank of about 25 oz (about 37 oz on the Deluxe) and a smaller pod container. Nespresso advises against brewing the carafe on it because the carafe does not fit under the Pop+ spout, so the Next is the practical choice for carafes. Vertuo Pop+ vs Vertuo Next compares them in detail.

The Vertuo Up is the newer step up: about 3 seconds to heat, a 1.4 L tank that can sit behind or beside the machine, and a dedicated button for coffee over ice. The older VertuoPlus has a motorized head and a bigger tank but no carafe size; Vertuo Next vs VertuoPlus covers that pair.

WhichCapsule note: Carafes and a slim body: Vertuo Next. Fastest start, biggest tank and an over-ice button: Vertuo Up.

Living with a Vertuo Next

The 37 oz tank covers two people's morning mugs and an afternoon cup, so most households refill it about once a day; a carafe morning uses about half the tank. Empty the pod container and drip tray together, before they fill.

Descale when the machine signals it or on the schedule in the manual, sooner in hard-water areas; the descaling guide has the steps. The manual that ships with the machine covers the rest.

What people actually ask

Is the Vertuo Next worth it for one person?

Yes, if you want carafes on weekends or brew into tall travel mugs. If your biggest cup is an Alto, the smaller Pop+ does the same daily job in less space.

Do I need the Nespresso app?

No. The Next brews from the pod barcode with one button. The app connection is for software updates, which is useful but not a reason to choose the machine.

Does the Vertuo Next leak?

Check the lid lock, capsule rim, drip tray and tank seating. Persistent leaks need manufacturer diagnosis, even when those checks look normal. Our leak guide walks through them. Nespresso publishes no failure-rate data, so treat reliability rankings online as opinion.

Can it make iced coffee?

Yes: brew a double espresso or an over-ice pod onto a full glass of ice. For iced lattes add cold milk or cold foam; see our iced latte guide.

Is the Vertuo Next loud?

It spins the pod while brewing, so there is a whir that gets louder on larger cups. That is normal. A new grinding or rattling noise is worth checking against is a noisy Nespresso normal?.

Who should buy which version

  • Black coffee, mugs and weekend carafes: the standard Vertuo Next.
  • Same coffee, but the finish matters to you: Premium or Deluxe.
  • Mugs plus weekly lattes or iced lattes: the Vertuo Next + Aeroccino.
  • One person, never a carafe, small kitchen: the Vertuo Pop+.
  • Several cups in a row, iced coffee, awkward counter: the Vertuo Up.
  • Lattes every day at one touch: the Vertuo Lattissima.

The bottom line

The Vertuo Next is still the sensible middle of the Vertuo range: every cup size including the carafe, a 37 oz tank and a slim body. Buy the plain version for black coffee and the Aeroccino bundle if milk is a weekly habit; look at the Vertuo Up only if a 3-second start, the bigger movable tank and the over-ice button matter to you every day.

The Vertuo Next page lists its specs and the pods it takes, and the machine finder ranks it against the rest if you are still unsure.
