Want to Give a Nespresso Machine in Canada? Pick by How They Drink

The one question that picks the machine

Ask yourself (or a partner, flatmate or colleague) one thing: what does this person drink at home on a normal weekday? Not at a café, not on holiday. The everyday cup decides everything else.

Original and Vertuo use different capsules that are not interchangeable (our compatibility chart shows which pods fit which machine). That is why the drink matters more than the model: once the system is chosen, every future coffee purchase follows it. If you are unsure, the two-minute machine finder asks the same questions and returns a ranked shortlist.

Small cups: espresso, lungo and Americano

If the person drinks short, strong coffee, a Nespresso Original machine is the right gift. Original capsules brew the classic Italian sizes: a ristretto of about 25 ml, an espresso of about 40 ml and a lungo of about 110 ml. An Americano is simply an espresso topped up with hot water, so any Original machine makes one with a kettle on the side.

The Original system also has the widest choice of coffee. Alongside Nespresso's own range, brands such as L'OR, Lavazza and Starbucks sell Original-compatible capsules, which keeps the running cost flexible for years.

Essenza Mini is the gift for a small kitchen or a desk. It is the smallest machine in the range, with two buttons for espresso and lungo and nothing to learn. Pixie is just as simple but looks more substantial, with metal side panels and a water tank you can see at a glance. CitiZ has a retro, rounded design and a larger 1-litre tank, so it suits a household that makes several coffees a day.

All three heat up in well under a minute and make the same coffee from the same capsules. Choose by space and style: Essenza Mini for the tightest counter, Pixie for a sharper look, CitiZ for a busier kitchen. If they drink an occasional cappuccino, add an Aeroccino milk frother to the box rather than paying for a bigger machine.

Lattes and cappuccinos at the touch of a button

For someone who mostly drinks milk coffee and wants it without any effort, the Lattissima series is the gift. These are Original machines with a milk system built in: press one button and the machine makes a cappuccino or latte macchiato, frothing the milk and pouring the espresso on top.

Lattissima One is the compact choice for one or two people. Its small milk jug is filled for a single drink, so there is no half-used carafe left in the fridge, and the jug goes straight into the dishwasher. Gran Lattissima offers a wider menu of one-touch milk recipes and a larger milk jug, which suits a family or someone who makes several milk drinks a day.

The trade-off is cleaning. Any machine that handles milk needs its milk parts rinsed after use. If the person drinks milk coffee every day, that small routine is worth it; if they drink milk once a week, an Original machine with a separate Aeroccino is easier to live with.

For someone who enjoys making the drink

Some coffee lovers want to steam their own milk and pour a flat white with a heart on top. For them, the Creatista series is the most rewarding gift. These are Original machines made with Breville (Sage in some countries) that pair a Nespresso espresso with a real automatic steam wand. The wand heats and textures the milk for you, with adjustable temperature and froth, and the person finishes the drink by pouring it themselves.

Creatista Plus is the one most people should buy: it has the steam wand, a stainless-steel milk jug and simple controls. Creatista Pro adds a touchscreen, more precise milk settings and a dedicated hot-water function, which suits someone who also makes tea or Americanos.

Both are larger and more expensive than a basic Original machine, and the wand needs a quick wipe after every drink. They are a superb gift for a home barista, and the wrong one for someone who just wants a button and a mug.

Big mugs of coffee: Vertuo and its cup sizes

If the person fills a large mug every morning, choose Nespresso Vertuo. Vertuo machines read a barcode on the rim of each capsule and automatically brew the right size, so there is no button to choose and no watery, over-extracted lungo.

The cup sizes are what make Vertuo different, so it helps to know them before buying:

Vertuo Pop+ is the compact, colourful choice for one person and a short counter, with the core sizes from espresso to the large XL cup. Vertuo Next is the all-rounder: a slim body, a big 1.1-litre tank and the widest range of sizes, including the carafe on supported versions. VertuoPlus has a motorised head and a movable water tank, which suits a busy household that makes several mugs in a row.

Vertuo capsules come mainly from Nespresso, with a few licensed partners such as Starbucks by Nespresso. If the recipient likes to experiment with many coffee brands, Original may suit them better.

Big mugs and lattes in the same household

Couples and families often want both: a big black mug for one person and a cappuccino for the other. Two Vertuo machines solve this in one appliance.

Vertuo Lattissima adds a one-touch milk system to Vertuo, so it makes the large black coffees and lattes or cappuccinos with a single button. Vertuo Creatista pairs Vertuo's cup sizes with the same automatic steam wand as the Creatista range, for someone who enjoys texturing milk by hand.

Both are larger and more expensive than a standard Vertuo, and both need their milk parts cleaned. If the household drinks milk only occasionally, a Vertuo Next plus an Aeroccino frother is a cheaper, smaller alternative that covers the same drinks.

Entry, mid-range or a big splurge?

Nespresso machines fall into three broad price tiers, and each tier buys a different kind of convenience rather than better coffee. The capsule does most of the work, so an entry machine makes an excellent espresso.

Entry gifts are the simple black-coffee machines: Essenza Mini, Pixie, CitiZ and Vertuo Pop+. They are compact, quick and easy to understand on the first morning. Most people who receive one use it every day for years.

Mid-range gifts add a feature the person will notice daily: a bigger tank and motorised head on VertuoPlus and Vertuo Next, or a built-in milk system on Lattissima One. Choose this tier when you know exactly which convenience matters to them.

Splurge gifts are the milk-focused flagships: Gran Lattissima, Creatista Plus and Pro, Vertuo Lattissima and Vertuo Creatista. They are wonderful for a milk-coffee lover and unnecessary for someone who drinks espresso black. Prices change often, so compare today's offers on the Amazon links in each section rather than relying on a list price.

Colours, bundles and what to check on the listing

Many machines come in several colours, and each colour is often a separate listing with its own price. The cheapest colour is usually the same machine inside, so pick the one that suits their kitchen and budget. Bundles are worth it only when the extra item is something they will use: an Aeroccino for a cappuccino drinker, a capsule assortment for a new owner.

Machines are also sold under partner brands. Original models such as Essenza Mini and CitiZ may carry the De'Longhi or Breville name, and Creatista is made with Breville, sold as Sage in some countries. They are the same Nespresso machines with the same capsules, so the partner brand does not change which coffee they can buy. Browse the full machine library to compare sizes, tanks and features side by side, or read our best Nespresso machines guide for a deeper comparison.

What to put in the box

A machine with no coffee is half a gift. Most machines include a small welcome pack, but adding two sleeves of capsules the person will enjoy makes the first week feel special. Choose by their taste: a bold espresso such as Arpeggio for Original drinkers, a smooth mug coffee such as Melozio for Vertuo. Our Nespresso coffee gift guide sorts the capsules by taste, from intense espresso to vanilla and caramel, and the best Nespresso pods guide and capsule library cover the full range. If they already own a machine and you only need coffee, the capsule finder matches pods to their taste in a minute.

Before you order, check three things on the listing: the capsule system (Original or Vertuo), the box contents (machine only, or with a milk frother) and the seller. Buying new from Amazon or an authorised store keeps the warranty and returns simple. As an Amazon Associate, WhichCapsule earns from qualifying purchases.

Questions people ask before buying

Which Nespresso machine is the best gift overall?

For a mug drinker, Vertuo Pop+ or Vertuo Next. For an espresso drinker, Essenza Mini. For a latte lover who wants no effort, Lattissima One. These three cover most people.

Original or Vertuo?

Original for espresso, cappuccino and the widest choice of compatible capsules. Vertuo for big mugs and a one-button routine with no guesswork.

Is a milk frother worth adding?

Only if they drink milk coffee at home. An Aeroccino turns any Original or Vertuo machine into a cappuccino setup and is easier to clean than an integrated milk system.

Can they use cheaper capsules?

Original machines accept many third-party compatible capsules from brands such as L'OR and Lavazza. Vertuo machines need Vertuo capsules, which come from Nespresso and a few licensed partners.

Does a Nespresso machine come with capsules?

Most new machines include a small welcome selection, but it varies by listing and country. Check the box contents on the listing, and add one or two sleeves of a coffee you know they will like so the first week is covered.

What if they already have a machine?

Then skip the machine and give coffee or a milk frother instead. Our coffee gift guide sorts the capsules by taste, which is the easiest gift to get right for an existing owner.
