Nespresso by Breville vs De'Longhi: Is There Any Difference?

Breville or De'Longhi Nespresso? Same capsules and same coffee; what differs is the model code, colors, warranty paperwork and parts. How to pick the right listing.

There is no difference in the coffee. A Nespresso Essenza Mini sold "by Breville" and one sold "by De'Longhi" are the same Nespresso design, take the same capsules and brew the same cup sizes. Pick the listing with the color you want, the better price and a trustworthy seller. What does differ is paperwork: the model code, whose warranty terms apply, and which spare parts fit.

Nespresso designs its machines in Switzerland and licenses partners to build and sell them. In the US those partners are Breville and De'Longhi, so most models appear on Amazon twice, under two brand names, often in different colors and at different prices. In the UK and Europe the same role is played by Sage (Breville's name there), De'Longhi and Krups. The machine you buy on nespresso.com carries only the Nespresso logo, but the label underneath still names the company that made it.

Two lines are the exception, because only one partner builds them: Breville makes the Creatista machines and De'Longhi makes the Lattissima machines. If you are choosing between those, the question is which machine, not which maker.

Who actually makes a Nespresso machine?

Nespresso's own help pages answer this: all machines are designed by Nespresso in Switzerland, where its research and development department is based, and production goes to partners. The same page says the Essenza and CitiZ ranges are assembled in China for its partners Krups and De'Longhi, the Lattissima range is made by De'Longhi in Italy, and the Pixie was still produced in Switzerland. Production locations change over time, so treat those as the company's published picture rather than a promise about the unit in a given box.

What matters for a buyer is the split of roles. Nespresso decides the capsule system, the brewing unit and the cup programs. The partner builds the machine to that design, sells it under its own brand and stands behind the warranty in many markets. That is why the same model can sit on Amazon as "Nespresso Essenza Mini by Breville" and "Nespresso Essenza Mini by De'Longhi" with different photos and prices.

WhichCapsule note: You are choosing a Nespresso model first. The partner name tells you who built it and who handles the paperwork, not how the coffee tastes.

How to tell which one a listing is

Read the model code. It is in the listing details on Amazon, on the box and on the label under the machine, and its first letters name the maker. Common US examples: the Essenza Mini is BEC220 from Breville and EN85 from De'Longhi; the Pixie is BEC430 from Breville; the VertuoPlus is ENV150 from De'Longhi; the Creatista Plus is BNE800 from Breville. In the UK and Europe, SNE codes are Sage and XN codes are Krups. Our guide to identifying your machine has the full list and where to find the label.

Letters after the number usually mark the color or a bundle, not a different machine. ENV150GY, for example, is the gray VertuoPlus. If two listings share the same number and differ only in those last letters, you are choosing a finish.

The Essenza Mini card below links the Breville build on Amazon. If you would rather have a De'Longhi color, search the same model name with "De'Longhi" and compare the code before you order.

WhichCapsule note: Matching the model number, not the brand name, is how you know two listings are the same machine.

Does the coffee taste different between Breville and De'Longhi?

No. The extraction is defined by the Nespresso design, so there is no maker-specific recipe to choose. On Vertuo machines this is especially clear: the machine reads the barcode on each pod and brews that pod's programmed recipe, whoever assembled the machine. On Original machines, the espresso and lungo buttons have the same factory volumes on both builds and can be reprogrammed the same way.

You will see blog posts claiming one maker brews hotter or makes more crema. They are not supported by either company's specifications, and small differences between two individual machines are more likely to come from scale build-up or a worn seal than from the brand name. If your coffee tastes weaker or cooler than it used to, descale the machine before blaming the maker.

WhichCapsule note: Choose the model for the drinks you make; the coffee will be the same from either partner's build.

Warranty and repairs: the one difference that matters

In the US, Nespresso says every machine comes with at least a one-year manufacturer's warranty plus lifetime troubleshooting help, and that the warranty terms are on the back of your user manual. Read that page: it tells you which company provides your cover and how to claim it. Keep the receipt or the Amazon order confirmation, because every warranty route asks for proof of purchase.

The two makers run their own terms on top. De'Longhi's US warranty page offers an additional year when you register a coffee machine, with exclusions it does not list, so check whether your Nespresso model qualifies before counting on it. Breville's US warranty runs from the date of purchase, or from delivery for California residents. In Canada, Nespresso lists two years for De'Longhi's Lattissima and Breville's Creatista models and one year for all others, which shows how much the terms depend on model and country.

Repairs and spare parts follow the same logic. A drip tray or water tank is listed by model code, so a part for the Breville BEC220 may not be sold under the De'Longhi EN85 code. Before ordering, match the code on your label.

WhichCapsule note: If two listings cost the same, register the machine with its maker as soon as it arrives; it is the cheapest way to get the most out of either warranty.

Which listing should you buy?

Decide in this order. First the system: Original for espresso and the widest choice of capsules, including compatible brands, or Vertuo for mug-size coffee from Nespresso's own pods. Then the model. Only then compare the Breville and De'Longhi listings of that model, on four things: the color you want, the total price, who sells and ships it, and exactly what is in the box. "With Aeroccino" and "Bundle" listings include a milk frother and cost more; make sure you are comparing like with like.

Two cards below show how mixed the US listings are. The Vertuo Next we link is the De'Longhi build; the Vertuo Pop+ is the Breville build. Both are excellent first Vertuo machines, and neither maker is the reason to pick one over the other. The Vertuo Pop+ vs Vertuo Next comparison covers the real differences.

Machines only one partner builds

Breville builds the Creatista machines, which add an automatic steam wand for latte art: the Creatista Plus review explains who that suits. De'Longhi builds the Lattissima machines, which dispense milk drinks from a milk container at the touch of a button: see the Gran Lattissima review. For these lines there is no second-maker listing to compare, so you are deciding between a wand and a one-touch milk system.

If you want to see every current Original and Vertuo model side by side, with tanks, cup sizes and milk systems, the Nespresso machine comparison chart puts them in one table.

Mistakes to avoid when comparing the two listings

Confusing a licensed Nespresso machine with a capsule machine from another brand. Amazon also lists machines from other companies that are sold as compatible with Nespresso capsules. They are not built under Nespresso's license, use their own brewing design and come with their own warranty. A genuine machine has a Nespresso model name such as Essenza Mini or Vertuo Next and a Breville or De'Longhi model code.

Comparing unlike boxes. A machine-only listing, a bundle with an Aeroccino and a renewed or used unit are three different purchases. Check the condition line and who provides the warranty before treating two listings as the same machine.

Buying from another country. Nespresso's warranty terms apply in the country of purchase, and a US machine is built for 120 V outlets. A listing shipped from abroad can end a hunt for a color but complicate a later repair.

What people actually ask

Is Nespresso by Breville better than Nespresso by De'Longhi?

Neither. Since the coffee is the same, decide on what really differs between the two listings: the color, the seller and shipping, the box contents and how easy a return is. If those are equal, either one is the right choice.

Why are there two brands for the same Nespresso machine?

It is how Nespresso licenses its machines: Nespresso keeps the capsule system and the brewing design, and partners build and sell the hardware. Each partner runs its own catalog, which is why color ranges and bundles differ between a Breville and a De'Longhi listing of the same model.

How do I know whether my Nespresso is Breville or De'Longhi?

Turn the machine over: the label shows the model code, and its first letters name the maker (BEC or BNE for Breville, EN or ENV for De'Longhi). On Amazon the same code usually appears as the item model number in the product details.

Do Breville and De'Longhi Nespresso machines use the same capsules?

Yes, for the same model. What decides the capsule is the system, not the maker: no Breville or De'Longhi Vertuo machine takes Original capsules, and no Original machine takes Vertuo pods.

Who do I contact for a warranty claim?

Start with the warranty page at the back of your manual, which names who provides the cover and how to claim. Nespresso's US help line also offers troubleshooting for the life of the machine, which often solves a fault before a claim is needed.

Can I use a De'Longhi part on a Breville Nespresso?

Only if the part is listed for your model code. Search by the full code, including the color letters, rather than by the model name; that is how both makers list tanks, drip trays and capsule containers.

Which listing fits you

  • You found your model in two listings: buy the cheaper one from a seller you trust, in the color you want.
  • You want a specific color: check both makers; each sells its own range for the same model.
  • You care most about warranty: read the warranty leaflet for that build and register the machine with its maker on day one.
  • You want latte art from a wand: Breville's Creatista line, the only maker for it.
  • You want one-touch milk drinks: De'Longhi's Lattissima line, the only maker for it.
  • You have not picked a system yet: start with Original vs Vertuo, then the model, then the listing.

The bottom line

Breville versus De'Longhi is not a choice about coffee. It is a choice between two listings of the same Nespresso machine, and the deciding details are the color, the total price, the seller and what is in the box.

Pods for this machine

Start with the right pods for either system

Original machines take only Original pods and Vertuo machines only Vertuo pods. A variety pack is the cheapest way to find the coffee you will reorder.
