A small flat white needs milk that flows into the espresso; a foamy cappuccino asks for a different texture. Decide which drink you make most often, how much milk it needs and whether you want to adjust the texture or press a preset. Those choices matter more than buying the appliance with the most foam.

GEN-2 is the heated jug model. The handheld NanoFoamer requires separately heated milk.

This is a specification-based comparison of the current NanoFoamer PRO GEN-2 and Aeroccino 4, not a hands-on foam or durability test. Manufacturer sources were checked on October 27, 2026; older generations can differ.

For latte art, start with the milk texture you need

Latte art needs milk that moves with the coffee as you pour. A stiff cap of foam can sit on the surface while the liquid underneath runs out first. If your current frother already makes a drink you enjoy, that separation matters only when it stops you achieving the pour you want. An attractive heart is not a prerequisite for a good latte.

Subminimal positions NanoFoamer PRO as a microfoam maker. The current GEN-2 heats the milk during its cycle and uses interchangeable flow controllers. Use the black controller as the starting point for dairy milk; the blue and green controllers provide alternatives for plant drinks. Keep the milk and program unchanged while trying a controller, then compare how the milk flows from the jug.

Allow for practice after the milk is ready: cup angle, spout position and the moment you lower the pour all affect the pattern. Buying another appliance will not choose those movements for you. Start with a small drink and one milk, so a change in your pour is easier to understand.

WhichCapsule note: Consider NanoFoamer PRO for a specific texture goal; keep a working frother if you are happy with the drinks it already makes.

Both make cold foam; choose how much adjustment you want

Aeroccino 4 offers cold foam, hot milk and two hot-foam preparations. That is a practical set of choices when different people want different drinks without adjusting a texture controller. Pick the preparation for the drink instead of judging the appliance only by how much foam it produces.

NanoFoamer PRO GEN-2 also has a cold program, alongside its five hot programs. For iced coffee with plain cold milk, you need neither frother. For a hot latte, equally, you may prefer warm milk with less foam rather than the airiest option. Choosing the appropriate button can be a more useful first change than buying a replacement.

An Aeroccino also makes sense as a separate milk station beside a compact Original machine. You can keep the coffee routine familiar while choosing milk separately. Our manual versus automatic frothing guide explains how that differs from a steam wand or a handheld tool.

WhichCapsule note: Choose Aeroccino 4 for its preparations and daily routine, rather than assuming every milk drink requires latte-art microfoam.

Milk choice and drink size can matter more than the appliance

Before comparing frothers, use the same refrigerated milk in the same drink. Changing from dairy to an oat drink while also changing the coffee dose makes it hard to tell which change helped. With plant drinks, formulations vary; a result with one carton does not establish how every oat or almond drink will behave.

NanoFoamer PRO GEN-2 takes 100–220 ml of milk. Aeroccino 4 takes up to 120 ml for foam or 240 ml for hot milk. Two large, foamy drinks therefore need more than one Aeroccino frothing cycle. Follow the marked level for the selected preparation; the hot-milk maximum is not a foam maximum.

Also check the coffee-to-milk ratio. If a latte tastes faint, increasing the milk volume can hide the espresso further. Try less milk first, then consider a stronger coffee base. Our milk guide covers dairy and plant options without treating a frother purchase as the only solution.

WhichCapsule note: Keep milk, coffee and serving size consistent while finding the preparation you like.

Choose the cleaning routine you will use every morning

Aeroccino 4's jug, lid, seal and whisk can go in a dishwasher at up to 70°C/158°F; the electrical base stays out. Remove the small parts for cleaning and let them dry before reassembly. This is a useful advantage if you already run the dishwasher daily.

NanoFoamer PRO GEN-2 is hand washed: rinse the impeller and NanoScreen after use and wipe the jug with a soft cloth under running water. No part goes in the dishwasher; do not submerge the jug or base. Leave room beside the sink for the small pieces to dry.

For either product, check the US electrical version, included parts, seller and return terms. A price attached to a different region or generation is not a comparable offer. We avoid a fixed price ranking because the exact seller and bundle can change; use the buying links to inspect the current listing.

WhichCapsule note: Confirm the model, regional power specification and cleaning instructions before you compare prices.

What people actually ask

Which gives the more even foam, Aeroccino or NanoFoamer?

For the fine, glossy microfoam that pours into latte art, NanoFoamer PRO is the one designed for it: its flow controllers let you set how airy the milk gets, and Subminimal builds it around microfoam. Aeroccino 4 gives a consistent result from one press to the next because each button is a fixed program, but its foam is thicker and stands on the cup, which suits a classic cappuccino better than a poured flat white. This is based on the manufacturers' specifications, not a side-by-side foam test.

Does NanoFoamer PRO heat milk?

The current NanoFoamer PRO GEN-2 heats milk during its cycle. Do not confuse it with the handheld NanoFoamer, which is a separate product.

Can I use either frother with Vertuo?

Yes. Both prepare milk separately, so you can add it to coffee from an Original or Vertuo machine. They do not make the two capsule systems interchangeable.

Should I replace an Aeroccino just to make lattes?

Not automatically. If you like your current latte, keep it. Consider a change when you have a specific unmet need, such as practicing a flowing latte-art pour, rather than because another appliance promises more foam.

Which one should I choose for cold foam?

Both offer cold foam. Choose Aeroccino 4 for its dedicated preset button or NanoFoamer PRO GEN-2 if you also want its texture controllers for hot drinks.

Which milk routine fits you?

  • Practicing latte art: shortlist NanoFoamer PRO for its microfoam-focused design, with time to practice pouring.
  • Different hot drinks and cold foam: shortlist Aeroccino 4 for its preparation buttons.
  • Already happy with your frother: adjust milk and coffee ratio before buying another appliance.

The bottom line

Choose by the milk task you want to change. NanoFoamer PRO is the more relevant shortlist for a deliberate microfoam and pouring project; Aeroccino 4 is a straightforward choice for preset milk drinks. Neither is a necessary upgrade for every Nespresso owner.

If you are still choosing the coffee system, Original versus Vertuo comes first. The frother can be chosen independently once the machine makes the coffee size you actually drink.

Pods for this machine

Start with the right pods for either system

Original machines take only Original pods and Vertuo machines only Vertuo pods. A variety pack is the cheapest way to find the coffee you will reorder.
