Buy the Vertuo Up if you brew several cups in a row, drink iced coffee, or want a bigger tank that can sit beside or behind the machine; buy the Vertuo Next if one or two hot cups at a time is your routine and you are happy with a slim machine and a 37 oz tank. Both read the same Vertuo pod barcodes and both support the 18 oz carafe, so the coffee in the cup is the same. The Up changes how quickly it starts, how often you refill and where it can stand.

Neither machine takes Original capsules, and neither froths milk on its own. If you already own a Next and it works, upgrading is a convenience decision rather than a coffee-quality one.

Vertuo Up: who is it for?

The Up suits households that make coffee in bursts: two people one after the other, a guest round, or a pot of iced coffee in summer. Heating in about 3 seconds means the second and third cup do not wait, and the 47 oz tank covers roughly six mugs before a refill.

The used-pod container is the quieter gain. At about 18 espresso or 13 mug pods, you empty it far less often than the Next's. The tank rotates, so you choose where it goes when you set the machine up. More in the Vertuo Up review.

WhichCapsule note: Several cups in a row, summer iced coffee, or a counter where depth is awkward: the Up.

Vertuo Next: who is it for?

The Next suits the person who brews one or two hot cups and wants a slim body. It handles every Vertuo size including the carafe, the 37 oz tank serves about four to five mugs, and the head takes about 30 seconds to warm, which most mornings you will not notice while you get a mug out.

The body is 5.6 in wide, which is the point of choosing it over the larger-tank Up. Premium and Deluxe trims change the finish only. The Vertuo Next review covers trims and bundles.

WhichCapsule note: One or two hot cups a day, no iced coffee: the Next is enough.

Is the 3-second heat-up a real difference?

It matters in sequence, not for a single mug. A Next needs about 30 seconds with the head closed before it brews, so one cup while you find a mug costs you nothing. Three cups for a table of guests, or a second round after breakfast, is where the Up's start pays off.

Both machines switch off after a short idle period according to Nespresso's listings, so the Up's quick start is also what makes turning it off between cups practical. If you only ever make one cup, ignore this row of the table.

WhichCapsule note: Count how many cups you brew back to back, not how many a day.

Which one has the better tank and refill routine?

The Up, on size and placement. 47 oz against 37 oz means a refill roughly every sixth mug instead of every fourth or fifth, and the rotating design lets you place the tank at the side if the cabinet above blocks the back.

The Next's tank sits behind the head, so it needs the full depth and clearance above for the lid. The Up's footprint is wider if you put the tank at its side, so measure for the layout you want, not just the box size. Nespresso machines for small kitchens has the checks.

WhichCapsule note: Measure with the lid open and your usual mug under the spout.

Do the Up and Next brew different pod sizes?

Essentially no. Both brew espresso, double espresso, gran lungo, mug, the Alto sizes and the 18 oz carafe from the pod barcode. Listings differ on how many sizes they count (the Up is given as seven by Nespresso, retailers sometimes fewer), and the Alto is about 12 to 14 oz depending on the pod generation, so check the sleeve.

The difference is the over-ice button. Coffee Creations brews a more concentrated coffee meant to hold up over ice or in milk; Nespresso's manual advises against it for ristretto, the Alto sizes, Cold Brew Style and Carafe Pour Over Style pods. The Vertuo pod sizes guide lists every format.

WhichCapsule note: Alto and carafe pods work on both; only the Up has the over-ice button.

How do cleaning and the app compare?

Both connect to the Nespresso app, which guides rinsing and descaling and shows maintenance alerts; neither needs it to brew. On the Up the app also lets you adjust cup sizes and temperature. Nespresso says descaling takes roughly 15 minutes and cannot be interrupted once launched, so start only when you have time and the Nespresso descaling kit.

A bigger pod container on the Up means less frequent emptying, but it also means a heavier bin when you do. Follow the descaling guide for either machine.

WhichCapsule note: Check your machine's manual before descaling; the button steps differ between Vertuo models.

What about milk drinks and Aeroccino bundles?

Neither machine froths milk. Both come in bundles with an Aeroccino, which foams milk hot or cold in its own jug while the pod brews. On the Up, the bundle pairs the over-ice brew with cold foam for iced lattes; on the Next it covers hot cappuccinos and lattes just as well. Look at which Aeroccino generation a bundle contains in Aeroccino 3 vs Aeroccino 4, and rinse the jug after each use (cleaning guide).

If milk is in most of your cups, an integrated machine may suit better: Vertuo Next vs Vertuo Lattissima compares the one-touch route with a separate frother.

WhichCapsule note: Count the frother in your counter measurement, and check the bundle contents before ordering.

What people actually ask

Should I upgrade from a working Vertuo Next to the Up?

Only if refilling, emptying the pod bin or waiting for several cups bothers you. The pods and the cup sizes are the same, so there is no coffee-quality reason to switch.

Is the Vertuo Up better for iced coffee?

Yes, because of its dedicated over-ice button. The Next can still brew onto ice using a normal size, but it has no concentrated option.

Can the smaller Pop+ replace either machine?

Not quite. The Pop+ tops out at the Alto in practice because the carafe does not fit under its spout; see Vertuo Pop+ vs Vertuo Next.

Do I need the Nespresso app?

No. Both brew from the pod barcode with one button. The app adds software updates, settings and guided maintenance.

Who should buy which one

  • Several cups in a row or a household of three or more: Vertuo Up.
  • Iced coffee in summer: Vertuo Up, for the over-ice button.
  • One or two hot cups a day, slim body: Vertuo Next.
  • Weekly lattes, either machine: the bundle with an Aeroccino.
  • Already own a working Next: keep it unless tank size, pod bin or heat-up annoys you.
  • Smallest Vertuo, no carafe: the Vertuo Pop+.

The bottom line

For a new purchase where both fit the counter, I would choose the Up if you make more than two cups at a sitting or drink iced coffee, and the Next if you want a slim machine for a couple of hot cups. Owners of a working Next gain convenience only, so I would not upgrade for the coffee.
