Short answer: stay with the Philips 3300 LatteGo EP3341/50 if espresso, coffee, cappuccino, latte macchiato and iced coffee already cover what your household drinks, and nobody minds sharing one set of settings. Step up to the 5500 LatteGo if two or more people keep changing the same recipe, or if you will really use its Americano, flat white and extra iced drinks.

In Canada the comparison is the EP3341/50 against the 5500 LatteGo sold here as EP5544 (check the exact Canadian suffix on the box). Both grind whole beans, brew internally and use the same LatteGo milk container. Both run on a standard 120 V outlet and come in bilingual packaging. The difference is the menu, the colour display and the saved user profiles, not a different way of making espresso.

Before you compare spec sheets, write down every drink your household made last week, with the cup size in ml and the strength each person likes. Circle the drinks where two people want different versions. That list tells you whether you need more recipes, more remembered settings, or neither.

Philips lists the 3300 with six drinks including hot water, and the 5500 with twenty hot and iced presets. That is not six against twenty brewing systems, and a longer menu is not evidence of better coffee.

Canadian edition prepared November 4, 2026. This is a comparison from manufacturer documentation (Philips product pages, the North American comparison chart and the 2300/3300 and 4400/5500 manuals), not a hands-on test: no taste, noise, speed or reliability measurements were made. The 5500 is referenced as EP5544 (check the exact Canadian suffix on the box); four saved profiles plus a non-saving guest mode are not counted as five users.

When the 3300 already does the job

If you drink a coffee in the morning and a cappuccino in the afternoon, the 3300 menu may already cover your whole week. Its direct choices are espresso, coffee, cappuccino, latte macchiato and iced coffee, plus hot water. You can still adjust strength and volume, so a short menu does not lock every cup to one setting.

What the 3300 does not do is remember separate settings for different people. If you like a short, strong cappuccino and your partner likes a longer one, one of you adjusts the shared settings each time. Ask yourself honestly how often that happens before choosing a machine for profiles you might rarely select.

A couple who agree on one coffee size and one cappuccino will probably get little from four profiles. Here, I would keep the 3300. That is a fit judgment, not a claim that a shorter menu tastes better or cleans itself.

WhichCapsule note: This is EP3341/50 with LatteGo, not a steam-wand 3300 or another finish sold under the same series name.

When the 5500 profiles fix a real problem

Picture two people who both drink cappuccino: one wants a smaller, stronger cup and the other wants more milk. On the 5500 you give each person a coloured profile, select it before choosing the drink, and set the recipe. The manual says the settings are saved to the selected profile when brewing ends, so forgetting to switch profiles can still overwrite someone else’s recipe.

The useful number is four saved profiles plus guest. Guest mode lets a visitor change a drink without storing it, so it is not a fifth saved user. Philips’ North American comparison chart and the 4400/5500 manual describe it this way; check the same feature on the Canadian EP5544 box or product page before you order.

Profiles do not split the machine into four stations. Everyone shares the beans in the hopper, the grinder setting, the water tank and the milk container. The manual places coffee temperature in the machine settings, so do not assume each profile remembers every machine setting.

If one person wants the odd decaf, a different profile does not change the beans already loaded. The pre-ground coffee chute handles that, with its own dosing steps. Plan it separately from profiles.

WhichCapsule note: Set up each person’s usual drinks on purpose. Guest mode is good for visitors and experiments, but it does not keep a fifth person’s favourites.

Count the drinks you will press, not the names on the menu

Americano, flat white and the extra iced recipes make the 5500 a different machine for someone who orders those drinks every week. Put them on your list only if you drink them now. Something you might try once is variety, not a daily need.

No Americano button on the 3300 does not mean you cannot have one: brew an espresso and add hot water from the machine. It is just an extra step. Decide whether that step bothers you before treating the missing button as a dealbreaker.

For iced drinks, the 5500 manual describes coffee brewed with warm water over ice. LatteGo is a hot-milk system, not a cold-foam attachment, and iced does not mean cold brew. The 3300 also has iced coffee, so wanting a cold cup in July is not, by itself, a reason to step up.

The 5500 also has ExtraShot, which the manual describes as adding an extra ristretto to the selected coffee or milk drink. It changes the recipe you ask for; it does not make the base espresso or the grinder better. Choose it for a drink you will repeat.

WhichCapsule note: Neither the recipe total nor the colour display shows which machine makes better coffee. This comparison is based on manufacturer documentation, with no taste, milk-temperature or timing measurements.

A shared morning: choose the profile before the first cup

With the 3300, agree on the usual settings and how the second person checks them. With the 5500, make profile selection the first step before touching a drink icon. On both, top up water and beans, attach LatteGo for milk drinks, place the cup and take it away when the drink is finished.

Plan two cappuccinos as two milk drinks made one after the other. A two-cup button for coffee is not a promise of two milk drinks at once. If the second person uses a different milk, switching profiles does not empty or wash the shared container.

End the rehearsal with whoever makes the last drink, because that person still faces the milk parts, the drip tray and the grounds. If nobody accepts that last job, neither a bigger menu nor profiles fixes it. For a different milk-cleaning trade-off between two bean machines, see Philips 3300 vs Magnifica Evo.

WhichCapsule note: This sequence assigns jobs; it does not time the machines. QuickStart and SilentBrew marketing are not measured speed or noise results.

LatteGo cleaning comes with either machine

Both use the same idea: a removable two-part LatteGo milk container with no tubes. Washing it stays a daily job, whether you choose drinks on a small panel or a colour screen.

The 5500 manual separates Quick milk clean from taking LatteGo apart and washing it. Its maintenance table asks for the quick program and then rinsing or dishwasher cleaning after use. Treat the outlet rinse as a first step, not the whole job.

For the coffee side, both manuals call for a weekly brew-group rinse and monthly coffee-oil treatment, with lubrication as a separate task. Emptying the drip tray and grounds, setting your water hardness and descaling are separate again. An AquaClean filter reduces descaling only if you replace it on schedule; it does not cover milk or coffee-oil cleaning.

Buying in Canada: suffix, packaging and warranty

Philips sells the 5500 LatteGo under several suffixes worldwide. The European EP5547/90 is a useful reference for the drink menu and profiles, and the photo here shows the EP5544/94 Grey Chrome finish, but the Canadian unit is EP5544 (check the exact Canadian suffix on the box). Match the suffix, the finish and the box contents before you buy, rather than assuming two suffixes are the same machine.

Best Buy Canada and Costco Canada both carry automatic coffee machines, though models and bundles change. Look for the 120 V rating and bilingual packaging, and keep the receipt: warranty applies in the country of purchase, and an imported 230 V European unit is not suited to a Canadian 120 V outlet and may not be covered by Philips Canada.

If neither menu answers your real question

Both Philips machines use beans and leave grounds; neither takes Nespresso Original or Vertuo capsules. If you would rather pick a different coffee for every cup without a grinder, compare a capsule machine with automatic milk in Philips 3300 vs Gran Lattissima.

Decide on the category and the cleanup you accept first. A longer Philips menu only helps once you are happy owning a bean-to-cup machine.

What people actually ask

Should I choose the Philips 5500 over the 3300?

Choose it when the extra named drinks or separate saved recipes solve something that happens every week. If the 3300’s espresso, coffee, cappuccino, latte macchiato and iced coffee cover your routine and shared settings are fine, the bigger menu may add little you use.

How many user profiles does the Philips 5500 have?

Philips’ North American documentation lists four saved user profiles plus a guest mode. Guest recipes are not stored, so it is not five saved users. Confirm the feature for the Canadian EP5544 you are buying.

Does the Philips 3300 save separate profiles?

No. EP3341/50 lets you adjust drinks but has no user profiles. People who want different versions of the same drink share one set of settings.

Does the Philips 5500 make cold brew or cold milk foam?

No. The manual describes coffee brewed with warm water over ice, and LatteGo makes hot milk. Iced recipes are not cold extraction or cold foam.

Does Quick milk clean replace washing LatteGo?

No. The 5500 manual separates the quick program from taking LatteGo apart and washing it. Follow the after-use cleaning table for your unit.

Will switching profiles change the 5500 from regular beans to decaf?

No. All profiles share one hopper and grinder. Use the separate pre-ground coffee chute for an occasional decaf, following its dosing instructions.

Which 5500 model code is sold in Canada?

Look for EP5544 and check the exact Canadian suffix on the box. Other suffixes, such as the European EP5547/90, can differ in finish, electrical rating and warranty coverage.

Choose from your household’s real drink list

  • Choose the 3300 when its core recipes cover your week and nobody needs their own saved version of a drink.
  • Choose the 5500 when people keep changing the same recipe or regularly want its Americano, flat white or extra iced drinks.
  • Use 5500 guest mode for visitors and one-off changes, knowing the recipe is not saved.
  • Choose neither if you expect automatic brewing to remove LatteGo washing or brew-group care.

The bottom line

I would start with the 3300 for a Canadian household whose weekly drinks already fit its six-item menu. I would move to the 5500 when saved personal recipes or extra drinks you will actually press fix a real daily frustration, not because every added icon looks like a bonus.

Before ordering, list the settings you would save for each person and the extra recipes you would use every week, then agree on who washes LatteGo. Check the Canadian suffix, the 120 V rating and the bilingual box, and buy where the warranty will be honoured. That decision holds up far better than choosing by the biggest number on the packaging.
