Vertuo Line Pod Sizes Explained: Espresso to Carafe

Buying capsules in Canada

Capsules sold in Canada carry English and French names on the sleeve, so the French name is the same coffee. Official capsules are sold by Nespresso and on Amazon.ca, and Original-compatible brands such as Starbucks by Nespresso are in many grocery stores. Nespresso runs its own capsule recycling programme in Canada; check the options for your province.

Nespresso Vertuo looks simple from the outside: insert a pod, close the machine, press one button. The confusing part starts when you see pod names such as Ristretto, Double Espresso, Gran Lungo, Mug, Alto, Cold Brew and Carafe. These are not just marketing names. In the Vertuo system, the capsule tells the machine how much water to use and how to brew the coffee.

This guide explains the main Vertuo pod sizes, who each one suits, and what to check before buying capsules. It also keeps the most important compatibility rule clear: Vertuo pods are for Vertuo machines. Nespresso Original capsules are a different system.

Quick Answer

Choose smaller Vertuo pod sizes such as Ristretto, Espresso or Double Espresso if you prefer concentrated coffee or milk drinks. Choose Gran Lungo if you want a longer black coffee without going full mug size. Choose Mug, Alto or Carafe if you want larger coffees, but check whether your Vertuo machine supports those sizes. Availability can vary by country, and Vertuo pods are not interchangeable with Nespresso Original capsules.

Vertuo pod sizes at a glance

The Vertuo range is designed around multiple cup sizes. On Nespresso’s system comparison page, Vertuo is presented as offering seven cup sizes and Centrifusion technology, while Original focuses on classic espresso-style drinks with 19-bar high-pressure extraction. That is the core difference: Vertuo is built for size variety, while Original is built around espresso and lungo.

The exact pods available can vary by country, season and machine. However, the main Vertuo size ladder is easy to understand:

The numbers above are practical defaults, not a promise that every pod, machine or country will offer every format. Some Vertuo machines support only the core sizes up to Mug, while other models support Alto or Carafe.

Who each Vertuo pod size is best for

Ristretto: the shortest Vertuo option

Ristretto is the smallest Vertuo size, usually around 25 ml. It is for people who like a short, concentrated coffee. In practical terms, choose Ristretto if you want a small cup with intensity rather than volume. It can also work as a base for a small milk drink, but it is not the best choice if you want a large morning coffee.

Espresso: the classic short cup

Espresso is around 40 ml and is the easiest Vertuo size to understand. It suits people who want a traditional short coffee but prefer the Vertuo ecosystem. Espresso pods can also be useful in recipes, iced drinks and cappuccino-style drinks when you do not want the milk to overpower the coffee.

Double Espresso: the flexible milk-drink base

Double Espresso is usually around 80 ml. It is one of the most flexible Vertuo sizes because it gives you more coffee than an espresso without turning into a long black coffee. If you often make latte, cappuccino, iced latte or flat white-style drinks, Double Espresso is usually the safest size to explore first.

Gran Lungo: longer, but not oversized

Gran Lungo is around 150 ml. It sits between a short coffee and a full mug. Choose it if espresso feels too small but mug-size coffee feels too large. Gran Lungo is a good middle ground for afternoon coffee or for people who want a longer black drink with more concentration than a 230 ml mug.

Mug: the everyday large coffee

Mug pods are usually around 230 ml. This is the size many buyers imagine when they choose Vertuo over Original. Mug works well for a morning coffee, a desk coffee or a longer drink with a splash of milk. If your main complaint about Original is that espresso and lungo feel too small, Mug is probably the Vertuo size you will use most.

Alto and XL-style coffee: bigger single servings

Alto or XL coffee pods are larger formats, often around 335–355 ml depending on market and machine listing. These suit people who want a bigger cup without brewing a full carafe. They can be useful for travel mugs, long mornings or users who drink one large coffee rather than several smaller cups. Check your exact machine before buying, because not every Vertuo model lists Alto support.

Cold Brew: useful, but market-dependent

Some Vertuo machines and markets list Cold Brew around 355 ml. Treat this as a specific product style rather than a universal Vertuo size. Availability can vary, and the brewing approach may differ from hot coffee. If cold drinks are your priority, check local Vertuo pod options and compare them with recipes using Double Espresso or Espresso over ice.

Carafe: for sharing and larger pours

Carafe pods are around 535 ml and are intended for larger servings. This is not a normal everyday espresso format. It suits households where one pod may serve more than one cup, or where someone wants a larger pot-style coffee. Carafe support is machine-dependent, so it is especially important to check your Vertuo model before buying these pods.

Machine compatibility: not every Vertuo machine supports every size

Vertuo pods are all part of the same Vertuo ecosystem, but machine support can still differ. For example, official comparison data lists Vertuo Pop with Ristretto, Espresso, Double Espresso, Gran Lungo and Mug. Vertuo Next and some premium Vertuo models list larger sizes such as Alto and Carafe. Vertuo Lattissima and Vertuo Creatista may also list larger formats and milk-focused features.

That means the safest buying rule is simple: check your machine’s supported cup sizes before buying larger pods. Smaller pods such as Espresso or Double Espresso are widely supported across the Vertuo range, but Carafe and some XL formats are not universal.

Original vs Vertuo compatibility note

This article is about Nespresso Vertuo. Original and Vertuo are separate capsule systems. Nespresso states that Vertuo pods are designed for Vertuo machines, while Original pods are made for Original Line machines. The pods have different shapes, brewing methods and machine requirements.

Do not buy Original-compatible capsules for a Vertuo machine. Also do not assume third-party compatible capsules work with Vertuo unless the manufacturer and machine compatibility are verified. For Vertuo, the safest buying path is to use official Vertuo pod options or clearly verified Vertuo products.

How to choose the right Vertuo pod size

Start with your normal cup, not with the pod name. If you drink short, strong coffee, compare Ristretto, Espresso and Double Espresso. If you drink coffee with milk, Double Espresso is often a better base than Mug because it keeps the drink more concentrated. If you want a longer black coffee, try Gran Lungo before jumping to Mug. If you want a morning cup that lasts longer, Mug is the obvious starting point.

For larger households, Alto or Carafe can make sense, but only if your machine supports them and you actually want that volume. Larger pods are not automatically better. They simply suit a different habit.

Country availability and buying notes

Vertuo pod names, seasonal blends, limited editions and size availability can vary by country. A pod shown on one Nespresso site may not be sold in another market. Machine support can also vary by model generation, bundle and retailer listing. Before buying, check local Nespresso options, merchant product pages and your machine manual.

Use affiliate links carefully. A useful call to action is “Check availability” or “View official options,” not “best price today” or “in stock now.” If you are unsure which size fits your habits, start with a smaller sleeve selection rather than committing to one large format.

Which Vertuo size should you choose?

Choose Ristretto or Espresso if you like short, concentrated coffee. Choose Double Espresso if you often make milk drinks or iced coffee. Choose Gran Lungo if you want a longer coffee that still feels focused. Choose Mug if you bought Vertuo for everyday larger cups. Choose Alto, Cold Brew or Carafe only after checking machine support and local pod availability.

FAQ
