Choose the Bambino Plus with a separate espresso grinder if you want automatic milk texturing and the freedom to choose or replace the grinder independently. Choose the standard Barista Express if you prefer an integrated grinder and want to learn milk steaming by hand. Both require you to prepare, tamp and empty a portafilter.

Still deciding how to organize your equipment rather than which of these two machines to buy? The built-in vs separate grinder guide provides a complete equipment list, replacement map and counter-access checklist.

For a whole-bean setup, comparing the Bambino alone against the complete Barista Express misses a necessary purchase. Here the concrete separate-grinder example is the Breville Smart Grinder Pro BCG820. It is sold separately from the US Bambino Plus BES500; neither of the machine cards below represents a two-appliance bundle.

The choice has two parts: where grinding happens and who manages milk texture. A smaller espresso-machine body does not automatically create a smaller complete station, and a built-in grinder does not make milk preparation automatic. Start with the jobs you want help with, then compare the equipment needed to do them.

Smart Grinder Pro dosing is controlled by time, not an integrated weighing scale. More grind settings or a shorter advertised heat-up do not establish a better-tasting or faster complete latte routine.

US comparison reviewed October 21, 2026, using manufacturer documentation. The separate setup is Bambino Plus BES500 with Smart Grinder Pro BCG820; the integrated option is standard Barista Express BES870XL. This is a workflow assessment, without a comparative taste, speed, noise or reliability test. The basic Bambino BES450 and Express Impress are different machines.

Bambino Plus and Smart Grinder Pro: a deliberate two-part setup

Bambino Plus supplies espresso brewing and assisted milk, while the separate grinder prepares the coffee. The Smart Grinder Pro is one verified example for this comparison, rather than a claim that it is the only grinder that works. Its supplied small cradle supports the 50–54 mm portafilter range, which covers the Bambino’s 54 mm portafilter.

The BCG820’s adjustable timer determines how long it grinds. You still establish a useful dose and grind setting for your beans and basket. A digital display and automatic stop do not mean coffee is being weighed. If you use a scale to check repeatability, allow room for it and learn which variable you are changing instead of adjusting grind size and dose together without notes.

Separate components let you position grinding to the left or right of brewing, subject to the appliances’ setup requirements. That flexibility can help an awkward counter. It also creates a path where you carry a filled portafilter, so leave a landing space and expect to manage stray grounds. Two compact-looking product photos do not measure that working area.

If you already own a suitable espresso grinder, Bambino Plus may use equipment you have rather than duplicate it. Confirm compatibility with your intended basket and workflow before buying another grinder. If you do not own one, put both the Bambino and the selected grinder into your purchase plan; the machine-only price cannot stand for a complete whole-bean setup.

Barista Express: integrated grinding with manual milk

The standard BES870XL combines grinding and brewing in one body. You grind into its portafilter, prepare the basket and move it to the group head. This removes the need to choose a separate grinder at the outset, but you are still responsible for the espresso preparation rather than pressing one button for an automatic latte.

Its grind-amount control is not an integrated dose-weighing scale. Breville’s instructions describe adjusting the grind and amount for extraction. That is a learning process on both setups. The useful distinction is where the controls and grinder live, not an assumption that one offers adjustment while the other does not.

The steam wand is manual. You hold and position the jug, introduce air and manage the texturing process yourself. Choose that when learning milk technique is part of the appeal. If the person using the machine dislikes steaming milk by hand, the convenience of a built-in grinder does not answer that objection.

This comparison uses the standard Barista Express, not Express Impress. It does not have the Impress assisted tamping system. If guided preparation is your priority, Ninja Luxe Café vs Barista Express compares a different kind of assistance rather than treating every espresso machine as equally automatic.

WhichCapsule note: The card uses the previously verified brushed-stainless-steel BES870XL / B00CH9QWOU offer. A similarly named Breville model can have different tamping, heating or milk controls.

Automatic milk changes attention, not the cleanup obligation

Bambino Plus provides three milk-temperature choices and three foam levels, and also permits manual texturing. In its automatic routine, the supplied jug sits on the drip-tray temperature sensor and texturing stops when the selected temperature is reached. Follow the jug markings and the manual rather than assuming any jug or fill level will behave the same way.

After texturing, remove the jug, wipe the wand and return it to the down position for the automatic purge, following the supplied instructions and heat precautions. Purging is not a substitute for wiping away milk residue or washing the jug. Keep the tray ready to collect purge water.

Now rehearse two morning lattes. Both setups need two coffee preparations and two spent pucks to deal with. With Bambino Plus, the milk controls reduce one technique task; with Express, allow attention for manual steaming. Different milks may require separate preparations. We have not timed either sequence or established that their heating, brewing and steaming happen simultaneously.

WhichCapsule note: If you want to avoid basket handling entirely, begin with the coffee pod, espresso and bean-to-cup guide. Neither setup here removes portafilter work.

Plan the cart and the counter together

For the separate setup, list the BES500, BCG820, included portafilter cradle and jug, cleaning supplies and any scale you choose to use. For Barista Express, list the machine, its included basket/tamper/jug and cleaning supplies. Do not order optional distribution tools or extra baskets until you can name the preparation problem they are meant to solve.

Sketch both layouts with the hopper, water tank and tray accessible. Leave room to tamp, set down a hot portafilter and move the milk jug. For the two-part layout, include both appliance bodies and the transfer area. For the integrated layout, leave space to reach the grinder controls and handle the basket. Check the current manuals’ electrical and installation requirements for the complete setup.

We do not add the current product-page dimensions into a claimed space winner: dimension ordering can be inconsistent between manufacturer fields and retail listings. A diagram for the exact purchased models and a real access plan are more useful than an apparently precise total based on mismatched width and depth figures.

Think about maintenance and the next equipment change

Both choices accumulate coffee residue, scale and milk residue, and the grinder needs its own care. Cleaning coffee oils and descaling water passages are different tasks. Follow each appliance’s instructions, including safe shutdown before grinder maintenance; a separate grinder adds a manual and a separate item to maintain, rather than removing maintenance.

With the separate setup, changing a grinder later does not require replacing the Bambino. That is flexibility, not a prediction that either appliance will fail. You can also use an external grinder with Barista Express if your needs change, but the original integrated grinder still occupies its part of the body. Consider the layout you would accept after an upgrade as well as on the first day.

New US Bambino Plus BES500BSS / B07JVD78TT and Smart Grinder Pro BCG820BSS / B00OXGXW8O offers checked for this guide were sold and shipped by Amazon.com. The Barista Express offer reuses the prior exact-model verification. Seller, condition and included items can change. Review each item separately; manufacturer-store bean promotions are not assumed to accompany an Amazon purchase.

Compare the complete purchase and ongoing coffee/cleaning requirements using current offers rather than a fixed price or payback promise. A two-item cart is not automatically a worse value, and an integrated machine is not automatically cheaper. The useful purchase is the one whose grinding, milk and cleanup tasks you are prepared to repeat.

What people actually ask

Does Bambino Plus include a grinder?

No. For the whole-bean setup in this guide, the BES500 Bambino Plus and BCG820 Smart Grinder Pro are separate purchases. If you already own a suitable espresso grinder, you do not necessarily need to buy this example grinder.

Does Bambino Plus tamp the coffee automatically?

No. You prepare and tamp its portafilter by hand. Its automatic milk function does not automate basket preparation or grounds disposal. Standard Barista Express also requires manual tamping.

How is the milk workflow different?

Bambino Plus offers automatic milk texturing with three temperature choices and three foam levels, plus manual texturing. Standard BES870XL Barista Express uses a manual steam wand. Both leave the jug and wand to clean.

Does Smart Grinder Pro measure the dose by weight?

No. BCG820 uses adjustable timed dosing. An automatic stop or shots setting is not a built-in weighing scale. Establish the grind and dose for your beans and basket, using a separate scale if that fits your routine.

Is Bambino Plus with a grinder always the smaller setup?

No. Include the separate grinder, appliance access, a tamping area and space to transfer the portafilter. This guide does not claim a measured total-space winner from the espresso-machine body alone.

Can I replace the Barista Express grinder later?

You can use an external grinder with the espresso machine if your needs change, but its built-in grinder remains part of the body. With Bambino Plus and a separate grinder, the two appliances can be chosen and replaced independently.

Who should buy which version

  • Choose Bambino Plus with a suitable separate grinder when automatic milk and independently chosen components matter most.
  • Choose standard Barista Express when one integrated grinding/brewing body suits your counter and you want to steam milk manually.
  • If you already own an espresso grinder, evaluate Bambino Plus with that grinder before buying another one.
  • Choose neither for a no-portafilter, one-button milk-drink routine.

The bottom line

I would choose Bambino Plus for someone who wants help with milk and accepts planning a complete separate-grinder station. I would choose standard Barista Express for someone who wants grinding in the same body and sees manual milk as a skill to learn.
