Choose the Ninja Luxe Café Premier ES601 if you want help with dosing, grind adjustment and milk frothing, plus dedicated coffee and rapid cold brew modes. Choose the Breville Barista Express BES870XL if learning to adjust a traditional espresso routine and steam milk by hand is part of the appeal. Both leave you with a portafilter to prepare and clean.

For the next decision within Ninja, Premier vs Pro explains which extra controls change your routine.

The difference becomes clearer when you follow one latte from beans to a clean counter. Ninja takes over some decisions inside that sequence. Breville makes more of them yours. Neither is a one-button bean-to-cup machine, and the standard Barista Express does not have the assisted tamping system of the Express Impress.

This guide uses the US stainless-steel Premier ES601 and brushed-stainless-steel BES870XL. If you are deciding whether to leave pods at all, start with Ninja Luxe Café vs Nespresso. Here the question is which portafilter routine you actually want to repeat.

A higher number of grind settings is not a taste score. This map describes documented controls and the work left to the owner, rather than measured preparation times.

US comparison reviewed October 20, 2026, from manufacturer documentation. We compare the ES601 Premier with the standard BES870XL Barista Express, not the Express Impress. This is a preparation-workflow assessment, without a side-by-side taste, temperature, noise or speed test.

Ninja Luxe Café: guidance for the first bag of beans

Ninja combines grind guidance with weight-based dosing. That is useful when you want the machine to narrow down what to do next rather than learn every adjustment at once. You still choose the beans and use the basket, tamper and portafilter. Guidance does not turn a portafilter into an automatic internal brew group.

Think about a new bag that does not brew like the last one. A beginner can use Ninja’s recommendations as a starting point while keeping the rest of the routine consistent. That does not establish that the first shot will be ideal. Roast, storage, the selected recipe and your own preference still matter, and our comparison does not include a tasting trial.

The extra modes are a separate reason to choose the Premier. If one person wants espresso and another wants a breakfast mug of coffee, they can use different brewing modes on the same machine. Rapid cold brew is a machine program, not an overnight steep. Buy for the drinks you will use regularly; a longer menu has little value if your household only wants espresso.

WhichCapsule note: The ES601 is the Premier version. Features of other Luxe Café models should not be assumed to come with this offer.

Barista Express: learn dose, extraction and manual milk

The BES870XL lets you adjust grind size and grind amount, then prepare the basket by hand. Its automatic grinding stop is not a scale measuring the dose by weight. Breville’s instructions explain that grind size and amount may need several adjustments. That is useful freedom for someone who wants to learn, but it also leaves more troubleshooting with the owner.

The 54 mm portafilter accepts the supplied single- and dual-wall baskets. Those basket types are different tools, not different drink buttons: choose the appropriate one using the manual. With a single-wall basket, a small change in preparation can change the flow. Keep notes and change one variable at a time instead of chasing the pressure gauge with several adjustments together.

Milk is where the learning commitment becomes especially visible. You hold the jug and control the wand position and texturing process. That makes sense if learning microfoam is part of why you want an espresso machine. A capable wand does not promise successful latte art on day one, and it does not establish better milk than Ninja without a controlled comparison.

WhichCapsule note: This card is the standard Barista Express BES870XL. Express Impress, Barista Pro and Barista Touch are different machines; their assistance and heating features are not included in this comparison.

The two-latte morning: rehearse the whole sequence

Imagine two people leaving home after breakfast. For each machine, write down: prepare the first basket, brew, remove grounds, prepare the second basket and brew again. Then add the milk work, pouring and cleanup. Neither machine makes both coffee doses disappear into an internal grounds bin. If handling a wet basket is the part you dislike, grind guidance will not solve that objection.

With Ninja, the assisted milk program shifts attention away from managing the wand yourself. With Breville, allow attention for jug position and milk texture as well as espresso preparation. Do not assume you can brew and steam simultaneously from a photograph showing both outlets. Follow each machine’s sequence, jug markings and instructions when planning multiple drinks.

Separate active work from waiting. You may enjoy watching a shot develop but dislike washing milk tools; another person may want the opposite. We have not timed these machines, so a stopwatch claim would hide the decision rather than settle it. The more useful question is whether everyone who will use the machine accepts the tasks assigned to them in the table.

WhichCapsule note: For grinding and automatic milk drinks without a removable portafilter, compare Philips 3300 vs Magnifica Evo.

Espresso, Americano and coffee are different jobs

The Barista Express centers on espresso. Adding hot water gives an Americano; that does not make it a drip brewer. Ninja’s dedicated coffee mode is a distinct workflow, which matters if a larger black coffee is the drink you want most days. Decide the drink before comparing machines on an espresso-only checklist.

For an iced latte, the espresso base and cold milk are separate from a cold brew process. Ninja’s rapid cold brew mode is an additional option, but its presence alone does not show that an iced latte tastes better. On either machine, choose a coffee-to-milk balance you enjoy instead of treating the largest cup as the strongest drink.

A household that changes between regular and decaf every cup should also think about the integrated hopper. Neither machine gives the instant bean change of selecting a different capsule. Read each manual before using pre-ground coffee or changing beans; do not treat one coffee-preparation method as permission to put ground coffee into a bean hopper.

WhichCapsule note: The whole-bean vs capsule guide helps separate coffee format from the amount of automation you want.

Would a separate grinder suit you better?

If automatic milk and independently chosen components matter more than grinding inside the same body, Bambino Plus vs Barista Express compares a complete Bambino-and-grinder setup with the standard Express. The Bambino machine-only listing is not a complete whole-bean cart.

Cleanup and counter space before you buy

Breville’s manual calls for cleaning the steam wand after milk texturing, including wiping and a brief purge as directed. The filter baskets and portafilter also need attention after use. On Ninja, assisted frothing still leaves milk in tools you must clean; follow its jug and steam-equipment instructions. A machine carrying out part of a process does not mean the residue has gone away.

Routine rinsing, coffee-oil cleaning and descaling address different things. Keep the correct supplies for the selected machine and follow its prompts and manual. Do not transfer a cleaning program or detergent from one model to the other just because both have a portafilter.

Measure the working space, not just the closed machine. You need access to water, the hopper, a place to set a hot portafilter and room for the milk jug. Leave a practical route from the machine to the sink or grounds container. Avoid filling every spare inch with accessories before you know which part of your routine needs help.

Which first setup needs fewer extra purchases?

Inventory the tools included in the exact offer first. Then identify a specific problem before adding a scale, knock box, extra basket or distribution tool. A separate scale can make a learning routine more repeatable, but it does not turn the standard Barista Express into an integrated weight-dosing machine. A second jug is useful only if the way you make drinks calls for it.

Budget for beans used while learning and the appropriate cleaning supplies. Both machines use whole beans, so generic beans-versus-capsules savings cannot choose between them. Compare your actual dose, coffee discarded and equipment purchases. Manufacturer-site bean promotions or free accessories are not automatically included with an Amazon offer.

What people actually ask

Is Ninja Luxe Café easier for a beginner than Barista Express?

Its grind guidance, weight-based dosing and assisted frothing reduce some decisions. You still prepare and clean a portafilter. The standard Barista Express leaves more adjustment and milk technique with you; choose it when learning those skills is part of the goal.

Does the standard Barista Express weigh and tamp the coffee?

The BES870XL has adjustable grind amount and manual tamping, without an integrated weight-based dosing scale. Do not confuse it with the Express Impress or assume an automatic grinder stop means the dose was weighed.

Can Barista Express make regular coffee or cold brew?

It brews espresso and can provide hot water for an Americano. It does not have equivalent native drip-style coffee and rapid cold brew programs to those on the ES601 Premier. Espresso over ice is also a different method from cold brew.

Which one makes better espresso?

This documentation-based comparison cannot establish a taste winner. Beans, water, dose, extraction and milk technique affect the result. Ninja emphasizes guidance; Breville gives a more manual learning routine. Neither description substitutes for a controlled tasting.

Will either machine make a latte with one button and no cleanup?

No. Both use a portafilter you prepare and empty, and both leave milk equipment to clean. For an internal brew group and automatic milk delivery, compare bean-to-cup machines instead, while still allowing for their maintenance.

Who should buy which version

  • Choose the ES601 Premier if you want preparation guidance and assisted milk, and will use its coffee modes alongside espresso.
  • Choose the BES870XL if adjusting espresso and learning manual milk texturing are activities you want to practice.
  • Choose neither if your main requirement is avoiding a portafilter, loose grounds and milk-tool cleanup every morning.

The bottom line

For a first setup, I would choose Ninja when the aim is to get help with the process and make several coffee styles. I would choose the standard Barista Express when the process itself is the hobby, especially manual milk and extraction adjustment.
