The espresso martini is a timing recipe. Warm coffee, a shaker that is not cold enough and too much syrup can give you a flat, sweet drink; a freshly brewed short espresso shaken hard with ice gives it its familiar chilled texture. This is an adult alcoholic drink. I would make the first one individually, taste it, and only then scale a batch for guests. Do not pre-shake a pitcher hours in advance and expect the foam to survive.

Canadian recipe note

Volumes in this recipe are in millilitres, matching Canadian packaging. Homogenized (3.25%) milk gives the richest microfoam, while 2% makes a lighter everyday latte. If you use a plant drink, the versions labelled "barista" hold foam best.

One drink: the starting measure

For one adult serving: 40 ml / 1.35 oz fresh espresso, 40 ml / 1.35 oz vodka, 20 ml / 0.7 oz coffee liqueur and 0–10 ml simple syrup depending on the liqueur's sweetness. Have a handful of fresh ice and a chilled cocktail glass ready. Brew one Original Ristretto Italiano or Firenze Arpeggio espresso into a heat-safe cup. A Vertuo machine can supply an espresso-sized capsule too; do not use a 230 ml coffee capsule at the same ratio.

Put vodka, liqueur, coffee and optional syrup into a shaker with plenty of ice. Close firmly and shake vigorously for about 12–15 seconds, until the outside is cold. Double-strain into the chilled glass. Garnish with a few coffee beans if you wish; they are decorative, not a caffeine measure. Never put alcohol in the coffee machine's tank or capsule holder.

Batch preparation for six without losing the foam

For six drinks, measure 240 ml espresso, 240 ml vodka and 120 ml coffee liqueur. Keep them separately chilled. Syrup is optional: start with none, then add up to 60 ml across the six only if the first test glass needs it. Make one serving first because liqueur sweetness differs widely.

At serving time, shake one or two portions at once with fresh ice and strain immediately. A whole pre-mixed bowl cannot reproduce the same foam and dilution. Brew the espresso ahead only briefly and refrigerate it promptly if batching; do not leave milk or coffee mixtures sitting at room temperature through a party. Prepare the garnish and glasses before guests arrive. A machine with a modest tank can make several short shots, but empty used capsules and refill water according to its normal workflow.

Capsule and sweetness choices

Ristretto Italiano keeps a roasted edge against the liqueur. Firenze Arpeggio gives a cocoa-like coffee direction. A gentler Volluto works if you reduce syrup and want the spirits less dominated by roast. If evening caffeine is a concern, choose a decaf espresso in the correct system; decaf still may contain a small amount of caffeine. The decaf guide separates flavour and caffeine expectations.

Coffee liqueur already brings sweetness. If the drink is cloying, remove syrup before increasing vodka. If it is thin, check that you used a short espresso and enough ice to chill during the shake. If the foam vanishes, shake closer to serving and strain immediately rather than trying to store the finished cocktail.

A considered alcohol-free coffee shaker

For a nonalcoholic glass, combine 40 ml espresso, 30 ml chilled strong black tea, 20 ml nonalcoholic coffee syrup or cold-brew concentrate, and 5 ml simple syrup if needed. Shake with ice and strain. It will not taste exactly like vodka and liqueur, but it preserves a cold coffee centre and a similar serving ritual. Label it clearly and use separate equipment when serving people who avoid alcohol.

A Pixie or Essenza Mini makes the short shots; a Creatista is unnecessary unless it is already the household machine. Nespresso's Martini recipe is a manufacturer reference, while our batch math and nonalcoholic option are practical editorial variations. Drink responsibly and check local legal drinking age.

The host's order of operations

Count glasses and ice before measuring alcohol. Chill glassware, label the decaf option, then brew short espresso shots. For a six-drink event, do not brew all six into one hot jug and let it sit exposed; cool it promptly and keep it chilled until service. Measure liqueur with a jigger rather than estimating by eye: the sweet component changes balance faster than the coffee does. Shake only when a guest is ready, and keep a separate shaker or rinse it thoroughly for the alcohol-free version.

The “three beans” garnish is a visual tradition, not a recipe requirement. What matters is a cold glass, a short coffee base, the correct dilution from shaking and a drink served right away. If a guest does not drink alcohol, offer the alternative before mixing rather than quietly swapping ingredients and claiming the result is the same cocktail.
