When a Nespresso machine is not pumping water, the cause is often simple: the tank may not be seated, air may be in the line, a capsule may be blocking the chamber, or cleaning/descaling may be overdue.
Start with safe checks. Do not open the housing, force the lever or head, or keep running long cycles if no water appears.
If your Nespresso machine is not pumping water, turn it off, remove any capsule, refill and reseat the water tank, check that the tank valve is not blocked, run a water-only cycle if your model allows it, and repeat once after a short pause. If the machine still hums without water, leaks from the base, smells hot, or shows the same alert after basic checks, stop and contact model-specific support.
Before trying fixes, notice what the machine is doing. A machine that is completely silent is a different issue from one that hums but does not move water.
| Symptom | Possible Cause | Safe First Move |
|---|---|---|
| Machine hums, no water comes out | Tank not seated, air in line, blocked flow | Reseat tank and run water-only cycle |
| Small drips only | Limescale, residue, capsule issue | Clean visible parts and plan descaling |
| Water comes out without capsule but not with capsule | Capsule fit or chamber issue | Remove capsule, inspect chamber, try correct system capsule |
| Lights blink and no water moves | Model-specific alert or mode | Check manual before pressing button combinations |
| Water under machine | Possible leak or internal issue | Stop using until location is clear |
Switch the machine off and let it rest for a minute. Open the lever or head normally and eject any used capsule. A damaged, stuck, or badly positioned capsule can stop normal flow and make the machine sound like it is working while little or no water reaches the cup.
Remove the tank, empty old water, rinse it, and refill with fresh water. Place it back firmly without forcing it. Check the bottom of the tank for visible debris around the valve area. If the tank is cracked or the valve looks damaged, do not tape it or improvise a seal. Replacement availability can vary by country and model.
Place a large cup under the outlet. Run a short water-only cycle if your machine allows it. For some Nespresso Original machines, this may be similar to brewing without a capsule. For Vertuo, the rinse or cleaning sequence can be model-specific, so do not guess hidden button patterns. Use your manual if the normal button does not start water flow.
If the machine has been unused for a while, air can sometimes interrupt the water line. After the first attempt, pause for a minute with the tank seated and try one more short water-only cycle. Avoid repeated long cycles with no water.
Empty the drip tray and used capsule container. Wipe the capsule area and coffee outlet with a damp cloth. Do not insert toothpicks, pins, knives, or metal tools into the outlet or capsule plate. If dried coffee residue is visible, soften it with a warm damp cloth and wipe again.
If water moves but comes out slowly or unevenly, limescale may be part of the problem. Descaling is different from surface cleaning. Use a product recommended for your model. Do not pour vinegar, bleach, scented cleaner, or homemade acid mixtures through the machine.
If your machine has a milk container, steam wand, or frother, check coffee flow without milk parts first. A blocked milk tube can affect milk drinks without proving the coffee pump has failed. Clean milk parts separately.
Nespresso Original and Vertuo are separate capsule systems. Do not test a Vertuo machine with Original-compatible capsules, and do not assume a third-party capsule that fits an Original machine belongs in Vertuo. If water flows without a capsule but fails with one capsule type, stop using that capsule and test only with the correct system.
Stop if water appears under the body, the machine smells hot, the sound changes sharply, the tank valve is visibly damaged, the capsule head will not open normally, or no water moves after two careful attempts. At that point, the safest next step is official support or a qualified repair route, not more improvised button sequences.
It may be trying to pump but failing to draw water because the tank is not seated, air is in the line, a capsule is blocking the chamber, or the machine needs maintenance.
Do not open the machine housing. Try safe external checks only. Internal pump repair should go through official support or a qualified repair service.
Only descale if water can move through the machine. If no water moves at all, first solve the tank, air, capsule, or support issue.
The safe checks are similar, but button sequences and cleaning modes can differ. Always check the correct manual for your exact model.
