Choose the Canadian Ninja Luxe Café Premier ES601C if you want to use whole beans and are happy to prepare a portafilter. Keep Nespresso if choosing a capsule and leaving fewer coffee-preparation tasks for yourself is the main attraction.

The models in this comparison

Official manufacturer product photographs. Cups and accessories shown are presentation, not confirmation of a seller’s box contents.

Before replacing a machine that still works, write down the problem you want to solve. Is it buying capsules, making a larger black coffee, or preparing two different milk drinks? Those lead to different comparisons. A new grinder will not simplify a morning that already feels too busy, while a small Original machine will not give you a bean-based drip-style drink.

This Canadian edition compares the ES601C with an existing Breville BEC220 Essenza Mini routine. Breville's Canadian page currently labels that model discontinued. That is a notice about the named Breville model, not evidence that every Essenza Mini or the Original capsule system has been discontinued. Other Canadian listings and bundles need their own model and package checks.

If you already use Vertuo, keep that separate from the Essenza Mini example. Original and Vertuo use different capsules and offer different drink choices. Our Original vs Vertuo guide explains that decision before you compare either system with beans.

This compares workflows, not measured preparation times. A separate frother is part of the capsule setup only when you already own one or deliberately buy a package that includes it.

Canadian edition researched October 24, 2026. This is a comparison of documented features and preparation tasks, not a hands-on taste, speed or noise test. The Ninja reference is ES601C; the compact Original example is Breville BEC220, whose Canadian manufacturer page currently marks that model discontinued.

What the Canadian ES601C adds

The Canadian Premier combines grinding, dose assistance and milk frothing in one station. Its product specification identifies espresso, drip-style coffee and rapid cold brew modes. These are choices about the drink you want; they do not turn the machine into a capsule brewer or remove every task between drinks.

There is still a portafilter to handle and grounds to discard. Think of the purchase as taking on a different morning job with guidance. If selecting beans and working through the preparation sounds enjoyable, that is a reason to switch. If you mainly want to press a button and leave, it is a reason to look more closely at what you already own.

Keep the model suffix on your shortlist. This edition concerns ES601C in stainless steel, rather than an American ES601 listing, a black Canadian variant or a Pro. Similar names and photographs are not enough to establish the same boxed machine.

WhichCapsule note: The manufacturer identifies ES601C as a 120 V Canadian model. That specification does not verify the electrical version of an unidentified marketplace seller's unit.

When keeping your Essenza Mini makes more sense

An existing BEC220 is a useful benchmark if your usual coffee is espresso or lungo. You choose a capsule for the current cup rather than committing the next several drinks to one hopper of beans. That can matter more than an extra brewing mode when two people prefer different coffees.

Decide whether you are dissatisfied with the coffee or with the shopping routine. Trying a different compatible Original capsule is a smaller change than buying a bean station. If you already like your espresso, replacing the machine introduces preparation work without necessarily addressing a problem you have.

The discontinued notice on Breville's Canadian BEC220 page deserves a precise reading. An existing working machine and a new purchase are different decisions. For a new listing, confirm the maker, full model, support arrangements and box contents rather than treating old product copy as evidence of current stock.

WhichCapsule note: Essenza Mini uses Original capsules. Vertuo capsules do not fit it. A listing that includes an Aeroccino is a different package from a machine-only listing.

Two people, two milk drinks: rehearse the handover

Imagine the first person wants a milk coffee before leaving and the second wants one later. With Ninja, list the tasks each person will accept: handling the portafilter, dealing with grounds, preparing the milk jug and leaving the station usable. Do not assign all the cleanup to an imaginary last user who never actually does it.

Now repeat the same exercise for your capsule setup. Coffee preparation may be simpler, but a separate milk frother still needs attention. Comparing a complete Ninja milk station with a bare capsule machine leaves out the part of the routine that may cause the most disagreement.

Different milks add a second handover. Decide how you will manage separate quantities and clean the equipment between uses, following each appliance's instructions. Assisted frothing is not a claim that shared equipment is suitable for avoiding allergen cross-contact.

WhichCapsule note: Use this exercise to agree who finishes the round, then follow the exact appliance's instructions for cleaning. A quick rinse and full component cleaning are different tasks.

A travel mug changes the comparison

Write down the actual drink you take out of the house. An espresso with added water, a lungo and a drip-style coffee can fill similar cups while remaining different preparations. Choose the method you enjoy before judging a machine by the size of the vessel beside it.

For an Original owner, Ninja's coffee modes may answer a wish for bean-based longer drinks. For a Vertuo owner, the question is whether selecting beans is worth preparing and clearing a portafilter. Check the supported sizes of your own Vertuo machine rather than assuming every Vertuo pod works in every model.

Measure the mug you already use and check the selected machine's cup clearance. Include its lid, handle and where you will set it while preparing milk. A product photograph containing a tall glass does not establish that your particular insulated mug fits.

WhichCapsule note: Rapid cold brew is a named machine process. It should not be described as the same method as an overnight immersion brew, or as better tasting without a controlled comparison.

Compare the complete purchase in Canadian dollars

Keep equipment and ingredients on separate lines. For beans, divide the bag price by its printed weight in grams and multiply by your dose. For capsules, multiply the capsule price by the number you use in the drink. Include coffee discarded while adjusting a grinder and extra shots used in a milk drink.

Then add only the equipment you would actually need to buy. A working machine already on the counter is not a new expense. A milk frother, a place to dispose of grounds and cleaning supplies may be. Compare the same number of drinks over the same period without assuming either setup will save a fixed amount.

For a cross-border listing, compare the displayed delivered total in Canadian dollars, including the seller's shipping and any displayed import charges. Confirm delivery and return terms for your address. A product existing on Amazon.com does not establish a Canadian new offer, a supported Canadian warranty or the final amount you will pay.

Choose the station with the cupboard open

Mark out where you will refill water, reach the hopper and put wet tools. Include the milk jug, capsule bin or grounds container and the route to the sink. Measure your own work area with cupboards open; a closed-machine footprint is only one part of the space you will use.

Check the current regional guide's dimensions and the access needed for refilling and removing parts. If a seller's dimensions conflict with the manufacturer, resolve the difference before ordering. Do not select the smaller number simply because it fits your kitchen.

If you have room, keeping a capsule machine while learning the bean routine can separate weekday convenience from experimentation. If there is only one usable station, choose the preparation you are willing to repeat when tired, rather than the one that looks most interesting in a demonstration.

What people actually ask

Which Ninja Luxe Café model is this Canadian comparison about?

The stainless-steel Premier ES601C. It is not an approval of an ES601, Pro or different Canadian colour variant offered by an unidentified seller.

Can the ES601C use Nespresso capsules?

No. It is a bean-and-portafilter system. Neither Original nor Vertuo capsules are its coffee input.

Does the ES601C remove all the work of making espresso?

No. Guidance and assisted functions still leave you with portafilter handling and grounds disposal. Choose it because that preparation suits you, rather than assuming it has the same workflow as a capsule machine.

Has every Essenza Mini been discontinued in Canada?

That is not established here. Breville's Canadian BEC220 page marks that named model discontinued. That notice alone does not establish the status of every other maker, model or retailer package.

Does an Essenza Mini include a milk frother?

Only when the exact package says so. Canadian machine and Aeroccino bundle listings are separate; a photograph or family name is not proof of the selected box contents.

Will switching from capsules to beans save money?

Calculate it using the drinks you make, your receipts, discarded coffee, supplies and additional equipment. No guaranteed saving or payback period follows from the brewing format alone.

Which Canadian household should make the switch?

  • Choose ES601C if selecting beans and preparing a portafilter are part of the experience you want.
  • Keep your Original setup if short coffees, cup-by-cup variety and familiar preparation solve the everyday job.
  • Compare your actual Vertuo model separately if a larger capsule-brewed mug is the priority.
  • Keep using a working machine while deciding if the proposed benefit is mainly a saving you have not calculated.

The bottom line

Switch when you want the bean routine enough to take responsibility for it. Keep Nespresso when its simpler coffee preparation remains the feature you value most. In Canada, make the final purchase decision about the exact regional model and delivered package, not a similar model name on a different storefront.

Original machines take only Original pods and Vertuo machines only Vertuo pods. A variety pack is the cheapest way to find the coffee you will reorder.
