Descaling Vertuo vs. Original Machines: What’s the Difference?

Descaling is one of the most important maintenance tasks for a Nespresso machine, but the process is not identical across every model. Vertuo and Original machines use different capsule systems, brewing approaches and button sequences. That is why a descaling guide for one model should not be blindly copied to another.

The good news is simple: the purpose of descaling is the same. You are flushing a descaling solution through the internal water path to help remove mineral buildup. The difference is how each machine enters descaling mode, how it runs the cycle, how it exits the mode and which model-specific warnings you need to follow.

Quick Answer

Vertuo and Original machines both need descaling, but the steps can differ by model. Vertuo machines often involve a head, lock/unlock action or model-specific button sequence, while Original machines may use espresso/lungo buttons or dedicated maintenance modes depending on the model. Do not guess the sequence from another machine. Always check the manual for your exact model, use a suitable descaling product, run the rinse cycle fully and keep cleaning milk systems separate from descaling.

What is the same on Vertuo and Original machines?

Both systems draw water from a tank, heat it, send it through an internal path and dispense coffee into your cup. Over time, minerals from water can build up inside that path. Descaling is meant to reduce that buildup.

The basic preparation is similar: remove any capsule, empty the used capsule container, empty the drip tray, fill the water tank according to your model instructions and place a large container under the coffee outlet. You should also stay near the machine while the cycle runs, because descaling and rinsing can send a lot of liquid through the outlet.

After the descaling solution stage, both systems need a rinse stage with fresh water. Skipping the rinse can leave unwanted taste or residue in the machine. If your machine has a milk system, treat that separately. Descaling the coffee water path does not fully clean milk pipes, jugs, frothers or removable milk parts.

What is different on Vertuo machines?

Vertuo machines use Vertuo capsules, not Original capsules. Many Vertuo models also have a machine head that opens and locks differently from a small Original lever. Because of that, entering descaling mode may involve a particular combination of button presses, head position or lock position.

Do not assume every Vertuo model resets, cleans or descales the same way. Vertuo Next, Vertuo Pop, Vertuo Plus and other Vertuo machines can have different controls and indicators. A blinking light pattern can also mean different things by model. Use the official manual or support page for the exact sequence.

A useful rule: if the head will not close normally, the machine is leaking from the base or the light pattern does not match the manual, stop before forcing anything. Descaling should not be used to fix a mechanical jam or electrical problem.

What is different on Original machines?

Original machines use Original capsules. They are often focused on espresso and lungo-style drinks, although some models include integrated milk systems. Many Original machines use espresso and lungo buttons for programming, rinsing or descaling mode, but the exact sequence is still model-specific.

A compact Original machine may have a very simple descaling routine. A larger milk-focused model may require extra steps for removable milk parts, a cleaning needle, steam areas or a separate milk cleaning cycle. Do not treat the milk system as if it were cleaned by the coffee descaling cycle alone.

If you use third-party compatible capsules in an Original machine, that does not change the descaling process. Compatibility affects capsule choice, not the internal maintenance routine.

Common mistakes to avoid

The biggest mistake is copying a button sequence from a different model. The second is confusing cleaning with descaling. Wiping the capsule area, emptying the drip tray and rinsing the tank are cleaning tasks. Descaling is a water-path cycle.

Avoid vinegar, harsh cleaners or homemade chemical shortcuts unless your model manual specifically supports them. They can leave odor, affect taste or risk damage. Also avoid opening the machine housing, poking internal parts or forcing the head/lever.

Do not buy accessories blindly. Descaling kits, water filters, drip trays and replacement parts can vary by country and machine model, so check availability and fit before purchasing.

FAQ

Can I use the same descaling instructions for Vertuo and Original?

No. The purpose is similar, but the button sequence and mode behavior can differ by model. Use the manual for your exact machine.

Is descaling the same as cleaning?

No. Cleaning removes visible coffee residue, milk residue and used capsule mess. Descaling targets mineral buildup inside the water path.

Do Vertuo machines need a different descaling product?

Use a product suitable for your machine and region. Do not assume any homemade solution is safe. Availability can vary by country.

Does descaling fix leaks or stuck capsules?

Not usually. Descaling may help slow flow caused by mineral buildup, but leaks, jams, electrical issues and broken parts need separate troubleshooting or support.
