A clearer way to choose a Nespresso machine and capsules

WhichCapsule is an independent guide to Nespresso machines and capsules. Tell us how you drink coffee and the finder ranks Original and Vertuo machines or capsules, with the reason behind every match.

Our guides cover the basics that decide a purchase: whether Original or Vertuo fits your cup, what the intensity number on a capsule means, which capsules work in which machine, and how to descale and look after your machine in UK water conditions.

BEFORE YOU BUY

Three questions worth answering.

Take the quiz
Will Original pods fit Vertuo?

No. The two systems use different capsules. Check the exact machine before you order.

Check the system
Do you want a larger mug?

Vertuo has larger coffee formats. Original focuses on espresso and lungo; check each model’s supported cup sizes.

Compare systems
Is intensity a caffeine score?

No. It describes flavour intensity, not a measured caffeine amount.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Nespresso questions, answered

What is the difference between Nespresso Original and Vertuo?

Original capsules are small and brew short, espresso-style drinks under high pressure. Vertuo capsules are larger, carry a barcode on the rim and brew bigger cups from a spinning capsule. The two systems use different capsules and machines, so choose the system first.

What do the numbers on Nespresso capsules mean?

The number is the capsule's intensity on a scale of 1 to 13, built from body, bitterness and roast. It is not a caffeine count. Lower numbers taste lighter and sweeter; higher numbers taste darker and bolder, and stand up well to milk.

Read the intensity guide
What do Nespresso capsule colours mean?

Colours help you recognize a named coffee, but they are not a strength code. Read the capsule name, the system (Original or Vertuo) and the intensity number on the sleeve before you buy.

How do I choose a Nespresso machine?

Start with the drinks you make most: short espresso, a larger coffee or milk drinks. Then check counter space, water tank size and whether you want a built-in milk system. The machine finder ranks matches from your answers and explains each one.

How often should I descale my Nespresso machine?

Follow your machine's descaling indicator and manual. Hard water scales a machine faster, so you may need to descale more often. Our step-by-step guide covers the process for Original and Vertuo machines.

Read the descaling guide
Can I use other brands' capsules?

Original machines accept Original-compatible capsules from many other brands. Vertuo machines are far more limited and mainly use capsules sold by Nespresso and its licensed partners. Never force a capsule into a machine of the other system.

Are the prices on WhichCapsule live?

Prices and stock change often, so we do not show them as fact. Our buttons open the current Amazon listing so you can check price, availability and the exact model before you buy.

Which Nespresso machines work in the UK?

Buy the UK version: UK machines run on 230 V with a three-pin plug. US-spec machines are built for 120 V and should not be used with a plug adaptor. The same models are often sold in the UK under the Krups, De'Longhi or Magimix name.
