Original Compatible in detail
Original Compatible is built around compact espresso-style capsules and the ristretto, espresso and lungo formats. It suits people who value a short, concentrated cup or use espresso as the base for cappuccino, flat white and latte.
Its greatest strength is choice. Alongside Nespresso Original capsules, clearly labelled compatible capsules from established coffee brands can be compared by intensity, roast, acidity, tasting notes, decaf status and performance with milk. Availability differs by country, but the format supports a broad and competitive coffee range.
Compatibility must still be explicit. An Original-compatible capsule is not a Vertuo capsule, and a familiar brand name alone is never enough to confirm fit.

Vertuo in detail
Vertuo expands capsule coffee beyond the classic espresso routine. Depending on the machine and capsule, the system can cover espresso, double espresso, gran lungo, mug, XL and selected carafe or iced formats.
Each capsule carries brewing information that the machine reads to adapt extraction. For the user, the practical benefit is a more guided relationship between capsule, cup size and brewing behaviour, especially when a household drinks both short and large coffees.
Vertuo is a separate ecosystem rather than a compatible extension of Original. Its controlled capsule format can support consistency and a wide cup range, while current capsule availability and supported sizes should always be checked for the selected country and machine.

For WhichCapsule, premium does not simply mean expensive. This focus is editorial, not a claim that every capsule in either system is automatically superior. Individual products still earn their place through compatibility, data quality, taste relevance and usefulness for a specific routine.

How brands fit into the selection
Nespresso defines the Original and Vertuo foundations. In the Original-compatible category, brands such as Lavazza, L'OR, illy and Starbucks can add different roast traditions, tasting profiles and price positions when compatible products are available in the selected market.
We include a brand when its products add a useful choice and can be identified clearly by system and coffee profile. A logo or reputation alone does not determine ranking, and country availability may change which brands appear.
