Espresso, Ristretto or Lungo: Which Nespresso Capsule Should You Pick?

Official capsules are sold by Nespresso and on Amazon.co.uk, and Original-compatible brands such as L'OR and Starbucks by Nespresso are stocked in the big supermarkets. UK packs list cup sizes in millilitres. Used aluminium capsules can go back through Nespresso's UK recycling service, and many councils accept them through Podback; check Podback's postcode checker for your area.

Choosing a Nespresso capsule is easier when you understand the drink size first. Many people start with flavour notes or intensity, but the real decision often begins with a simpler question: do you want a short, concentrated coffee, a balanced espresso, or a longer cup? That is where ristretto, espresso and lungo matter.

This guide explains the difference in everyday terms. It does not invent ratings, prices, stock status or test results. Availability, capsule names and compatible alternatives vary by country, so use this as a decision framework before checking local options.

Quick Answer

Choose ristretto if you want a smaller, more concentrated shot with dense body. Choose espresso if you want the most balanced short coffee and the easiest base for cappuccino or latte. Choose lungo if you want a longer black coffee with more volume and a lighter feel. For Nespresso Original, these are core short-cup formats. For Vertuo, cup sizes are capsule-specific and depend on the Vertuo pod and machine. If you are unsure, start with espresso, then use the quiz to match capsules to your routine.

The simple difference

Ristretto, espresso and lungo are not just different names for the same capsule. They describe how much coffee ends up in the cup and how concentrated the drink feels.

Nespresso’s machine comparison tools commonly group short Original-style drinks around 25–110 ml, and some Original machines list Ristretto, Espresso and Lungo cup sizes. Vertuo machines can support a wider range of sizes depending on the model and capsule.

When to choose ristretto

Choose ristretto when you want the most concentrated experience. It is usually smaller than an espresso, so it can feel thicker, darker and more intense even when the capsule itself is not automatically higher in caffeine. Ristretto works well if you like short coffee after a meal, want a powerful flavour in a small cup, or dislike the diluted edge that can appear in longer extractions.

Ristretto is not the best choice if you want a slow drink to sip for ten minutes. It is also not ideal if you plan to add a lot of milk, because a very small shot can disappear in a large latte. If you want milk drinks, espresso or a stronger espresso-style capsule is usually more practical.

When to choose espresso

Espresso is the safest starting point for most Nespresso users. It is short enough to keep body and aroma, but not as concentrated as ristretto. It also works as a flexible base for cappuccino, latte, macchiato, iced latte and affogato-style recipes.

Pick espresso if you are new to Nespresso and want to learn your preferences without overthinking. It is also the easiest format for comparing capsules: try a medium roast, a dark roast and a fruity or cereal-style capsule all as espresso, then decide what you actually enjoy. If you mostly drink milk drinks, choose capsules that still taste clear through milk instead of focusing only on intensity numbers.

When to choose lungo

Choose lungo if you want a longer black coffee from the Original system. Lungo uses more water than espresso, so the cup feels bigger and often lighter. It can be useful in the morning, at a desk, or whenever you want more volume without moving to a large mug-style Vertuo coffee.

Lungo is not just “more espresso.” Some capsules are designed to taste good as lungo, while others may become thin or bitter when pulled too long. If the capsule packaging suggests espresso only, do not assume it will taste better as lungo. For a reliable lungo, look for capsules specifically marked for lungo or longer extraction.

Original vs Vertuo compatibility note

This distinction matters. Nespresso Original machines are the main home for ristretto, espresso and lungo style capsules. Many third-party compatible capsules are made for Original machines, but you still need to check the packaging.

Vertuo is different. Vertuo capsules use a system-specific format and barcode-based brewing. Do not buy Original-compatible capsules for a Vertuo machine. Also do not assume third-party capsules work with Vertuo unless compatibility is clearly verified. If you own Vertuo, choose the Vertuo pod size that matches the drink you want.

How to choose by habit

Use your daily routine rather than the capsule colour alone.

• Choose ristretto if you like very short, strong-tasting coffee.
• Choose espresso if you want the most flexible everyday format.
• Choose lungo if you want a longer black coffee without moving to a mug.
• Choose espresso or strong espresso-style pods for cappuccino and latte.
• Choose Vertuo capsules if you want larger official cup sizes.

If you drink different styles during the day, keep two capsule types at home: one espresso capsule for milk drinks and one lungo capsule for longer black coffee.

Common mistakes

The first mistake is using every capsule as lungo. Longer extraction can overdraw some coffees and create bitterness. The second mistake is assuming intensity equals caffeine. Intensity usually reflects roast, body and perceived strength, not a guaranteed caffeine level. The third mistake is mixing systems. Original-compatible capsules and Vertuo capsules are not interchangeable.

The fourth mistake is buying a big sleeve before testing the format. Start with a small selection when possible, especially if you are trying ristretto or lungo for the first time.

FAQ

Is ristretto stronger than espresso? It usually tastes stronger because it is smaller and more concentrated. That does not automatically mean it has more caffeine.

Is lungo weaker than espresso? Lungo has more water, so it often feels lighter. A good lungo capsule should still have structure and aroma.

Can I make any capsule as a lungo? You can sometimes adjust volume, but not every capsule tastes good when extended. Check the recommended cup size.

Which is best for cappuccino? Espresso is usually the most practical base. For larger milk drinks, choose a capsule with enough roast and body to show through milk.

Do Vertuo capsules work the same way? No. Vertuo capsules are system-specific and set the drink size through the Vertuo brewing system. Do not use Original capsules in Vertuo machines.
