Choose Ninja Luxe Café Premier ES601UK if you want to choose whole beans and accept a portafilter routine. Choose Nespresso Original if espresso and lungo capsules suit your usual drinks; consider Vertuo separately if larger capsule coffees are central to your morning. For milk drinks, compare the frothing equipment as well as the coffee machine.

A switch from capsules to beans changes what you do before and after every cup. Ninja helps with the dose and milk, but you still handle grounds and a portafilter. Nespresso removes grinding and tamping from that sequence, while leaving capsule disposal, water-system care and any milk equipment to you.

For the UK buying examples, we use the silver ES601UK Premier and black CitiZ&Milk EN267.BAE by De’Longhi, an Original machine with an Aeroccino 3. The CitiZ&Milk card is not a Vertuo recommendation. Premier ES601UK is also distinct from Pro ES701UK and American ES601 packages.

This is a task comparison, not a timed race. Original and Vertuo capsules are different formats and cannot be exchanged between the systems. No single Vertuo model supports every size sold across the range.

UK editorial comparison reviewed 22 October 2026 using manufacturer documentation. The buying examples are ES601UK Premier and Original CitiZ&Milk EN267.BAE; Vertuo is discussed as a separate capsule system. We have not run matched taste, noise, speed or ownership-cost tests.

Ninja: decide whether choosing beans is worth the extra handling

The ES601UK combines grinding with a portafilter workflow and offers espresso, filter-style coffee and cold-brew settings. That gives one household several ways to use its beans. It does not make those drinks identical to Original or Vertuo coffee, and a menu label is not evidence of a taste winner.

The reason to choose this route is that you want to select beans and take part in preparing them. You use the machine’s guidance, prepare and tamp the basket, fit the portafilter and start the coffee. After brewing, used grounds and a basket replace the spent capsule you would otherwise eject.

Changing coffee is also a different task. One person can choose a different capsule for the next cup without a shared bean supply. With Ninja, plan around what is already in the hopper and grinder. Do not assume that selecting a different drink instantly replaces the beans inside the machine.

For milk, the UK instructions have you fill the supplied jug within its limit, select the milk type and froth setting, then pour the result yourself. Hot frothing can queue after brewing has started; the guidance distinguishes cold foam, which can run while brewing. This is assisted preparation with several actions still in your hands.

WhichCapsule note: Choose ES601UK for the beans-and-portafilter routine you will actually repeat. A guided dose or frothing cycle does not empty the grounds or wash the milk jug.

Original: use CitiZ&Milk as a complete milk-drink example

Original is the clearer starting point if your normal drink begins with a short espresso or lungo. The EN267.BAE CitiZ&Milk example has two programmable coffee buttons. Its guide gives factory volumes of 40 ml for espresso and 110 ml for lungo; these are starting settings, not a claim that every coffee should be stretched to any mug size.

The black UK package here includes an Aeroccino 3 on the shared base. Coffee and milk are prepared in separate vessels. You choose the capsule, brew the coffee, froth the milk in the Aeroccino and combine them yourself. It is not an automatic milk outlet that fills a finished latte in the cup.

A plain CitiZ without the milk unit is a different package. If you already have a frother, you may prefer to keep it; if you need one, include it in your space and cleanup comparison. Counting only the capsule brewer would give an incomplete picture of a household that makes two cappuccinos each morning.

The useful convenience is the absence of loose-coffee preparation. You still fill water, eject the used capsule and empty the capsule container and tray. The Aeroccino has its own after-use cleaning instructions, so a capsule machine with milk is not a cleanup-free station.

WhichCapsule note: The linked black EN267.BAE is CitiZ&Milk with Aeroccino, for Original capsules. Do not substitute a machine-only CitiZ or use Vertuo capsules in it.

Vertuo: choose the capsule and machine together

Vertuo belongs in a separate column because it uses a different capsule shape and brewing system. The capsule barcode guides preparation. The UK range includes espresso and larger coffee formats, but the sizes available to you depend on the exact machine and compatible capsule.

That makes Vertuo relevant when a mug of black coffee is your normal starting point. Check that your chosen machine brews your preferred capsule size and accommodates the cup you use. A range-wide list of sizes does not prove that a particular compact model brews all of them.

Milk is a second decision here too. A Vertuo brewer sold alone is not the same setup as a bundle with a frother or a Vertuo model with an integrated milk system. The CitiZ&Milk purchase card in this article is an Original example and does not cover those Vertuo packages.

If you already own a functioning Nespresso machine, identify its system before ordering coffee or planning a replacement. A cupboard of Original capsules does not transfer to Vertuo, and neither format becomes whole beans for Ninja. Your current coffee supply is part of the change.

WhichCapsule note: Confirm compatibility on the exact Vertuo model’s current UK documentation. This article compares the system without presenting an unverified Vertuo buying card.

Run a two-person morning on paper

Start with one black coffee and one latte. For Ninja, write down the coffee settings, basket preparation, milk-jug preparation and the reset between drinks. For Original or Vertuo, write down the two compatible capsules and whether the selected machine or separate frother handles the milk. Include the person who pours it.

Then change the scenario to two milk drinks. Use the jug’s correct maximum line rather than assuming one fill suits two full mugs. If one person wants a different milk, include cleaning and resetting the milk equipment according to its instructions. Separate equipment or successive batches still need space and handling.

Finally, assign the last-cup jobs. Who empties the grounds or capsule bin, washes the milk equipment and leaves the tray ready? This exercise shows whether you want fewer loose-coffee tasks or more choice over beans. It cannot establish a precise time saving without testing the same drinks and conditions.

Include the milk cleanup you will do every day

After using milk on Ninja, UK support says to remove the jug, wipe the wand and push it down for its purge with the jug off the platform. That purge does not wash the jug. Deal with the basket, grounds and other removable parts as their care instructions require.

For the Aeroccino 3 supplied with CitiZ&Milk, the guide calls for cleaning after each use. Its jug is not dishwasher-safe and must not be immersed; clean the interior and removable parts as instructed and keep the electrical underside and connector dry. Do not borrow Aeroccino 4 dishwasher advice for this different unit.

Milk cleanup and descaling are separate responsibilities. Follow the chosen machine’s own maintenance guidance and water-hardness advice. A clean-looking jug does not tell you that the coffee machine’s water system has had its required care.

Make the complete UK station fit

Measure the operating area as well as the machine. Include access to water, room for the lever or hopper, a cup, milk equipment and removal of the tray or used-coffee container. A slim capsule brewer can become a wider station once the frother and drying space are included.

For Ninja, plan an open worktop position: the UK guide excludes operation beneath a wall cabinet or within a cabinet. Do not treat a measured gap above the hopper as permission to ignore that instruction. Use the exact model’s placement guidance for either setup.

Check the UK model number, electrical version, finish, seller and contents before buying, then keep the purchase details with the appropriate UK support information. The black CitiZ&Milk package here includes the frother; glasses shown in a product photograph do not by themselves establish box contents.

For the broader change, read the UK beans versus capsules guide. If you want capsule milk dispensed into the cup, the local Gran Lattissima versus Lattissima One comparison considers a different milk routine. If you have chosen beans and are deciding how much guidance to use, see Ninja versus Sage Barista Express.

What people actually ask

Does Ninja Luxe Café ES601UK use Nespresso capsules?

No. This Ninja comparison concerns whole beans ground for its portafilter. Original and Vertuo are separate capsule routes, and neither capsule format is used in the ES601UK.

Can I use Original capsules in a Vertuo machine?

No. Original and Vertuo use different formats. Choose coffee compatible with the actual system and, for Vertuo, confirm the selected capsule size is supported by your model.

Does CitiZ&Milk pour a finished latte into the cup?

No. The EN267.BAE example brews Original coffee and prepares milk in the Aeroccino. You combine them yourself.

Is the included Aeroccino 3 dishwasher-safe?

No. The CitiZ&Milk guide says not to put its jug in the dishwasher or immerse it. Follow the cleaning instructions and keep the electrical underside and connector dry.

Which setup tastes better?

We have not run a matched taste test. Choose the coffee style and daily preparation you want; this comparison does not claim a measured taste winner.

Will switching to beans remove daily cleaning?

No. Ninja leaves grounds, basket and milk-equipment care. Capsules remove grinding and tamping, but the bin, tray, water system and any milk equipment still need attention.

Match the setup to your ordinary drinks

  • Ninja ES601UK: you want to choose beans and are willing to prepare, empty and clean a portafilter.
  • Original: espresso or lungo capsules suit your drinks, and you want to avoid grinding and tamping. Include the milk unit if you need one.
  • Vertuo: larger capsule coffees matter to you, and you will check the chosen model’s capsule-size compatibility.
  • Two-person kitchen: compare both drinks and the final cleanup, including different milk preferences and space to reset equipment.

The bottom line

Start with your usual cup and the handling you want to repeat. Ninja is the stronger fit when choosing beans and preparing a portafilter are part of the appeal. Original suits an espresso-and-lungo capsule routine; Vertuo deserves a separate look when larger capsule coffees are central.

For a milk household, decide with the complete station in view. The UK CitiZ&Milk example includes its Aeroccino, while Ninja uses a jug and steam wand. Neither removes the pouring and after-use care. Choose the routine you will leave ready for tomorrow.

Pods for this machine

Start with the right pods for either system

Original machines take only Original pods and Vertuo machines only Vertuo pods. A variety pack is the cheapest way to find the coffee you will reorder.
