Pick the capsule system first, then the machine. Original machines (Essenza Mini, Pixie, CitiZ, Lattissima and Creatista) brew espresso and lungo from small capsules and accept compatible pods from other brands. Vertuo machines (Pop+, Next, VertuoPlus, Up, Vertuo Lattissima and Vertuo Creatista) read a barcode on Nespresso's own pods and brew everything from a single espresso to an 535 ml carafe. Inside a system, the same capsule makes the same coffee in every machine, so what you are really choosing is tank size, milk, footprint and convenience.

Comparing these in the UK

Check that both models are sold in the UK version: 230 V with a three-pin plug. UK listings often appear under the Krups, De'Longhi or Magimix name for the same machine, and colours or bundles can differ from US ranges. Our Amazon links start on Amazon.com; OneLink may redirect eligible visitors to a local store. Check the final store, currency and delivery before ordering. Compare UK bundles with capsules or an Aeroccino as well as the standalone machine.

The two charts below put every current model side by side with the figures that decide a purchase: how much water the tank holds, the largest cup it brews, how it handles milk and who it suits. Each row links to the head-to-head that settles the closest call, and the sections after the charts explain how to read them for your kitchen and your household.

Vertuo machines compared

Vertuo machines spin the pod and read its barcode, so the machine sets the cup size for you. The differences are the tank, the largest size it can brew, the milk system and how quickly it is ready.

Vertuo Pop+

0.75 L; Deluxe 1.1 L · Alto, 355 ml; the carafe accessory does not fit · None · One person in a small kitchen · Vertuo Pop+ vs Vertuo Next

Vertuo Next

1.1 L · Carafe, 535 ml · None; Aeroccino bundles · Every size in a slim body · Vertuo Up vs Vertuo Next

VertuoPlus

1.2 L; Deluxe 1.7 L · Mug, plus the older 14 oz Alto; no carafe · None · Mugs for a shared household, motorized head · Vertuo Next vs VertuoPlus

Vertuo Up

1.4 L, movable · Carafe, 535 ml · None; Aeroccino bundles · Several cups in a row and iced coffee · Vertuo Up vs Vertuo Next

Vertuo Lattissima

About 1.6 L · Mug, 230 ml; some listings add larger sizes · Integrated carafe, about 0.5 L · Mugs and lattes at a button · Vertuo Next vs Vertuo Lattissima

Vertuo Creatista

2 L · Carafe, 535 ml · Automatic steam wand, 3 textures and 3 temperatures · Café-style lattes plus big mugs · Vertuo Creatista vs Vertuo Lattissima

The Vertuo Up stands out on speed: its heat-up is about 3 seconds against roughly 25 to 30 for the Next, and it has an over-ice button. The older Vertuo Pop (about 20 oz, mug size at most) has been replaced by the Pop+ in the US.

WhichCapsule note: Carafe pods need a machine that lists the carafe and has room for the jug under the spout; check both before you buy carafe sleeves.

Original or Vertuo: decide this first

Choose Original if you mostly drink espresso-based coffee, want milk drinks built on a short shot, or care about capsule choice: Original machines accept compatible capsules from L'OR, Lavazza, Starbucks by Nespresso and others. Choose Vertuo if you want a full mug or a carafe of black coffee from one button and are happy buying Nespresso's own pods, the only ones the barcode system brews.

The machine cannot be switched later. An Original machine will never brew a Vertuo pod and the reverse, so match the system to the drink you make most mornings, not to the occasional one. Original vs Vertuo goes through the difference in detail, and the pod compatibility chart shows which third-party capsules fit which machine.

WhichCapsule note: Most regret comes from buying Vertuo for mugs and then wanting cheaper compatible espresso pods, or the reverse.

Milk: separate frother, one-touch or steam wand

There are three ways to make milk drinks across the range, and they suit different mornings. A separate frother such as the Aeroccino sits beside any machine: you froth, then pour over the coffee. It is the cheapest route, makes cold foam too, and leaves you a jug to rinse. One-touch milk (Lattissima One, Gran Lattissima, Vertuo Lattissima) froths straight into the cup at a button; the Lattissima One uses a small single-serve jug, the Gran Lattissima and Vertuo Lattissima a container you can keep in the fridge.

A steam wand (Creatista Uno, Plus and Pro, Vertuo Creatista) textures milk in a steel jug and you pour it, which gives the silkiest foam and room for latte art but takes the most time and cleaning. If milk is in most of your cups, one-touch saves steps; if it is a weekend habit, a frother beside a black-coffee machine is enough. Manual vs automatic milk frothing and the best machines for cappuccino and lattes go further.

WhichCapsule note: Count milk cleaning as part of the machine: a container or wand that is not rinsed daily is the most common cause of off flavours.

How big a tank do you need?

Work it out from your cups. An Original espresso uses about 40 ml and a lungo about 110 ml; a Vertuo mug is 230 ml. A 0.6 L Essenza Mini tank gives about five lungos, a 1 L CitiZ about nine; on Vertuo, a 0.75 L Pop+ gives about three mugs, a 1.1 L Next four to five and a 1.7 L VertuoPlus Deluxe seven to eight. Rinse cycles and the water left in the tank take a little off each figure.

One person can live with a small tank. Two people drinking mugs every day will refill a small Vertuo daily, which is where the Next, the Up or a Deluxe version earns its extra size. The tank position matters too: the Vertuo Up and VertuoPlus tanks can sit to the side, which helps under low cabinets.

WhichCapsule note: If refilling is the chore you hate, buy the bigger tank; it is the one difference you will notice every day.

Will it fit your counter?

Width and height decide where a machine can live. These are the published body sizes for the most common models; add room above for the lever or lid and behind for the tank.

Essenza Mini

About 3.3 in (8.4 cm), Breville version · About 8 in (20.3 cm)

Pixie

About 4.4 in (11.2 cm) · About 9.3 in (23.6 cm)

CitiZ

About 5.1 in (13 cm) · About 10.9 in (27.7 cm)

Lattissima One

6.1 in (15.4 cm) · 10.1 in (25.6 cm)

Creatista Plus

6.7 in (17.1 cm) · 12.1 in (30.8 cm)

Vertuo Next

5.6 in (14.2 cm) · 12.4 in (31.4 cm)

Vertuo Up

About 4.7 in (12 cm) with the tank behind · About 10 in (25.4 cm)

Vertuo Lattissima

7.5 in (19 cm) · 12.4 in (31.5 cm)

Vertuo Creatista

About 9 in (22.8 cm) · About 12.6 in (32.1 cm)

For a tight kitchen, the best Nespresso machine for a small kitchen compares the compact models by footprint and layout.

WhichCapsule note: Measure the space with the lid or lever open and the tank lifted out, not just the machine's resting size.

What people actually ask

Which Nespresso machine has the biggest water tank?

The Creatista Pro, at about 2 L, and the Vertuo Creatista, at about 2 L. Among black-coffee machines, the VertuoPlus Deluxe has about 1.7 L and the Vertuo Up 1.4 L.

What is the smallest Nespresso machine?

The Essenza Mini, at about 3.3 in (8.4 cm) wide in its Breville version. On Vertuo, the Pop+ and the Vertuo Up (with its tank behind) are the narrowest options.

Which Nespresso machines can brew a carafe?

The Vertuo Next, Vertuo Up and Vertuo Creatista brew the 535 ml carafe. The Pop+ manual lists the pod, but the Nespresso carafe accessory does not fit under its spout. No Original machine brews a carafe.

Which Nespresso machines have a built-in milk system?

Original: the Lattissima One and Gran Lattissima (one-touch) and the Creatista Uno, Plus and Pro (steam wand). Vertuo: the Vertuo Lattissima (one-touch) and the Vertuo Creatista (steam wand). Every other model works with a separate Aeroccino.

Do different Nespresso machines make different coffee?

Not within a system. The same Original capsule tastes the same in an Essenza Mini and a Creatista Pro, and the same Vertuo pod in a Pop+ and a Vertuo Up. The machine changes capacity, speed, milk and convenience, not the coffee in the capsule.

Which machine for which household

The bottom line

Choose the system by the drink you make most, then let the tank, the milk method and the space decide between models. Within a system the coffee does not change, so there is no reason to pay for a bigger machine you will not use.

If two models still look equal, open the head-to-head linked in the chart, or let the machine finder rank them from seven questions about your drinks, milk habit and counter. For picks by drinker type, see the best Nespresso machines.

Pods for this machine

Start with the right pods for either system

Original machines take only Original pods and Vertuo machines only Vertuo pods. A variety pack is the cheapest way to find the coffee you will reorder.
