Choose Philips Baristina BAR300 if you want whole beans with automatic grinding and tamping, and accept emptying a portafilter after each coffee and rinsing it as directed. Choose Nespresso Essenza Mini if you want Original capsules, simple espresso or lungo selection and a used-capsule container. For milk drinks, plan a separate frother with either machine-only offer.

The models in this comparison

Product photographs: Philips and Breville. Shown: black BAR300/60 and Piano Black Breville Essenza Mini. Both buying offers are machine-only; no milk frother is pictured as included.

A compact machine is only part of a compact coffee station. Beans or capsules need storage, the water tank needs access, and milk equipment needs its own working space. The better choice is the complete setup that leaves you room to prepare a drink and clear up afterwards.

This US comparison uses black BAR300/60 and Breville Essenza Mini in Piano Black. The Baristina Plus and Latte are different products. A standard BAR300 does not inherit a dual hopper, integrated milk system or accessories because a similar name appears beside it in a store.

No numeric space winner is claimed. Measure the exact machine plus access paths and any separate frother; a product-width comparison alone misses the work area.

US buying comparison reviewed October 21, 2026. Baristina here means the black BAR300/60, not Baristina Plus BAR500 or Baristina Latte. Essenza Mini is the Breville Piano Black machine-only version. This is a documentation-based workflow guide, without hands-on taste, noise, speed or space measurements.

Baristina: beans without a separate grinder or hand tamp

Baristina puts the grinder and tamping step inside the machine’s preparation sequence. You select the coffee and swipe the handle; you do not build a separate grinder-and-tamper station. That makes it relevant to a small kitchen where the attraction of beans is choosing the coffee, rather than collecting espresso tools.

The portafilter stays part of your routine. Wait until all indicator lights are off before removing the portafilter, then invert it over a bin and press the puck-ejection button, as described in the manual. Empty it after every brew; the manual calls for rinsing at the end of the day or between drinks if preferred. Decide where those grounds will go before placing the machine: a nearby bin or small knock container needs a practical position. Do not plan to wash a puck down the sink.

The manufacturer instructions distinguish espresso and lungo selection from the intensity boost. Start with the supported controls rather than treating BAR300 as a traditional manual grinder and espresso machine. Its automation is useful if you prefer fewer adjustments; someone who wants to tune every variable may want a different kind of setup.

Essenza Mini: capsule choice instead of loose-ground handling

Essenza Mini takes Nespresso Original-compatible capsules. Vertuo capsules are a different format and do not fit. You select the capsule rather than manage a hopper and removable coffee basket, then eject the used capsule into the container after brewing. That suits someone whose main objection to beans is dealing with loose grounds.

The container postpones disposal; it does not make it disappear. Leave room to remove the capsule container and drip tray, refill water and open the lever comfortably. Keep capsule storage modest enough that it does not consume the space the small machine saved. A large display rack is optional, not part of the brewing requirement.

Capsules also let two people choose different coffees without emptying a bean hopper between cups. Check compatibility and your preferred capsule selection first. Convenience here describes the preparation choices; it is not a claim that every capsule tastes the same or that the Mini reproduces another machine’s extraction.

WhichCapsule note: The linked offer is the Breville Piano Black machine alone. An Essenza Mini plus Aeroccino bundle is a separate purchase configuration.

Measure the complete milk-drink station

For a latte, write down machine width, frother width and the separation needed by each manufacturer. Then add somewhere to put the cup and a route to the sink. If the two appliances cannot sit in one row, check whether moving the frother for each drink is a routine you will accept.

Make a second measurement with the machine in use: open the hopper or capsule lever, remove the water tank, pull out the tray and handle the portafilter or used-capsule bin. Leave the required ventilation and overhead clearance. A paper outline can help plan the counter, but it should include the access area rather than only the base.

Neither machine-only card includes a milk frother. Do not compare the footprint of a bundled photograph against a bare machine and assume the milk function is integrated. With either choice, milk preparation adds equipment and a washing task. If milk drinks dominate your morning, choose that part of the station deliberately.

The two-person cleanup rehearsal

For two Baristina coffees, include a portafilter-emptying step between drinks and decide whether to rinse between cups, following the manual’s release and heat precautions. The person making the second coffee needs the basket ready again. For two Mini coffees, include capsule ejection and insertion; check that the container and water supply have enough room before starting.

For milk drinks, add the frother’s minimum and maximum fill levels and its washing instructions. Two coffees do not automatically mean one milk batch is appropriate. Different milks, textures or dietary needs can change the sequence more than the coffee machine does.

Baristina’s supplied manual warns against putting the portafilter in a dishwasher; only the drip tray and tray lid are identified there as dishwasher-safe. Rinsing after a drink and periodic deeper cleaning are different tasks. Follow the selected machine’s descaling guidance rather than transferring a cleaning method between beans and capsules.

Bean freshness, capsule storage and the real running cost

Use a bean quantity that fits your consumption instead of filling the hopper simply because space is available. The BAR300 manual warns against caramelized or flavored beans. Store the rest appropriately and think through regular-versus-decaf changes. The supplied manual also describes a separate pre-ground decaf procedure in the portafilter; follow that procedure rather than putting grounds into the bean hopper. The Mini shifts that problem to keeping compatible capsules you actually want to drink.

A beans-versus-capsules saving cannot be guaranteed from these machine names. Compare the coffee you buy, the amount used and discarded, cleaning supplies and any separate frother. Include coffee you stop drinking because the process does not suit you. We give no fixed-price or payback claim.

The new black BAR300/60 offer checked was sold by DLX Deals and shipped by Amazon. The Essenza Mini card reuses the previously verified new Amazon.com offer. Check the current seller, condition and included items before ordering: a direct product link can present a different offer later. Manufacturer photos and documentation do not guarantee a marketplace seller’s future stock.

What people actually ask

Does Baristina BAR300 need a separate grinder?

No. It grinds whole beans and tamps as part of its preparation sequence. You still empty its removable portafilter after every brew and rinse it at the end of the day or between drinks if preferred, following the manual.

Does Baristina BAR300 make milk drinks by itself?

The BAR300/60 machine-only offer here has no integrated milk system and no included frother assumed. Plan a separate milk method. Baristina Latte and retailer frother bundles are different configurations.

Can Essenza Mini use Vertuo capsules?

No. Essenza Mini uses the Original capsule format. Choose Original-compatible capsules; Vertuo capsules are not interchangeable.

Which setup takes less counter space?

Measure the exact versions with water access, hopper or capsule lever clearance, disposal access and any separate milk frother. This guide does not claim a measured total-space winner from the machines’ closed dimensions alone.

Can the Baristina portafilter go in the dishwasher?

The manufacturer manual supplied with the checked offer says not to put the portafilter in a dishwasher. It identifies the drip tray and drip tray lid as dishwasher-safe. Follow the instructions supplied with your exact unit.

Is this the Baristina Plus comparison?

No. This guide compares US BAR300/60 with the Breville Essenza Mini. Baristina Plus BAR500 and Baristina Latte have different features and are not represented by the BAR300 buying card.

Who should buy which version

  • Choose Baristina BAR300 when choosing whole beans matters and you accept a removable portafilter and grounds cleanup.
  • Choose Essenza Mini when compatible capsule choice and avoiding loose-ground handling suit your weekdays.
  • With either machine, plan separate milk equipment and enough space to access water, waste and cleaning tools.

The bottom line

For a small kitchen, I would choose the coffee routine before the appliance. Baristina is a focused route to beans without a separate grinder or manual tamping station. Essenza Mini makes more sense when you want a compact Original-capsule routine and an easy change of coffee between cups.

Put the milk tool and disposal step into your counter plan before buying. The station that works with the doors, tank and tray open is the one you will find easier to live with.

Pods for this machine

Start with the right pods for either system

Original machines take only Original pods and Vertuo machines only Vertuo pods. A variety pack is the cheapest way to find the coffee you will reorder.
