Choose the Cuisinart DGB-30 if you want single-serve filter coffee from your own beans and will empty a filter basket between brews. Choose Nespresso VertuoPlus if you prefer portioned Vertuo capsules and ejecting the used capsule before the next cup. The DGB-30 is not an espresso substitute; the useful comparison is your everyday mug and the work left after it.

The models in this comparison

Single serve describes one brewing round, not a promise that the second drink needs no preparation. Here the important difference is the reset: Cuisinart needs its used grounds cleared, while VertuoPlus moves the used capsule into a container that you empty later. Both still need water, periodic cleaning and descaling.

For the wider system choice, read whole beans vs capsule coffee and coffee pod machines vs espresso machines. This guide stays with DGB-30 and the gray De’Longhi VertuoPlus, without transferring features from DGB-2 or newer Vertuo models.

Brew sizes are recipe settings, not measured cup yields. Do not assume the DGB-30’s 24 oz option has an equivalent VertuoPlus capsule or infer temperature or taste superiority from these specifications.

US comparison reviewed October 21, 2026, using the DGB-30 product page and instruction booklet, Nespresso’s VertuoPlus manual and exact Amazon model listings. This is a documented workflow comparison, without a side-by-side taste, temperature, noise or timing test. DGB-2, Vertuo Next and milk-frother bundles are separate products.

DGB-30: your beans, with a filter basket to reset

The DGB-30 combines a conical burr grinder with a single-serve filter-coffee brewer. You load beans, prepare the filter, select a strength and size, then start a brew. Its coffee supply is not locked to a capsule range. If you regularly buy a particular roaster’s beans, that flexibility may be the main reason to accept the basket work.

There are two filter routes: the included permanent gold-tone filter or a correctly fitted 4-cup basket paper filter. Decide which fits your kitchen before ordering. A reusable filter means clearing wet grounds and washing the filter; paper adds a consumable and a used filter to discard. Neither choice allows you to leave the previous coffee in place for the next brew.

The booklet makes that reset explicit. After brewing, the Power/Brew button flashes to remind you to open the filter door and dispose of used grounds; functions remain unavailable until that step is done. For a person having one mug, that may be an acceptable end-of-cup job. For two people leaving together, it belongs between their drinks, not on a cleaning list postponed until evening.

Ground mode gives you another route when you want a different pre-ground coffee. Follow its quantity and grind instructions rather than pouring grounds into the bean hopper. The manual also limits strength adjustment in Ground and Ice modes. Those are different preparations, not the full whole-bean adjustment range with the grinder simply turned off.

WhichCapsule note: Buying card: DGB-30 in Black Stainless. This is not the DGB-2 refillable-capsule design, a carafe Grind & Brew model or an espresso machine.

VertuoPlus: change the capsule instead of the filter basket

VertuoPlus suits the person who wants to select a portion rather than handle loose grounds at every serving. Insert a compatible Vertuo capsule and brew; the machine reads its code for the preparation. For the next cup, open the motorized head to eject the used capsule, then load another. You are not cleaning a reusable coffee filter between those two cups.

That is especially useful when the second person wants a different coffee or decaf. You change the compatible capsule, without emptying a hopper or clearing coffee out of a grinder. It does not guarantee that every Vertuo recipe is available on VertuoPlus: Original capsules do not fit, and newer large-format or special capsules need an explicit compatibility check.

For an everyday mug, use the size on the intended sleeve as your starting point; the familiar mug serving is 230 ml, about 7.77 fl oz. Do not buy VertuoPlus expecting it to duplicate the DGB-30’s entire 8–24 oz range. Filling a larger travel mug with multiple capsules changes the ingredient count and the preparation you repeat.

The used coffee is still in your kitchen, now inside spent capsules. Keep the container and tray on your cleanup list. If you plan to recycle, choose a real collection/return route and follow its instructions; recyclability is not proof that every used capsule is actually recycled. The gray machine-only card here does not include an Aeroccino or built-in milk system.

WhichCapsule note: The linked offer is gray De’Longhi VertuoPlus, machine only. Separate milk equipment and capsules are ongoing parts of the setup, not included by inference from a styled photograph.

Two people, two mugs: make the handoff visible

For two similar morning coffees on DGB-30, prepare the first filter and mug, choose the recipe and brew. Then attend to the basket reset before choosing the second serving. Keep a suitable waste container and washing access close enough that clearing grounds is a normal part of the station. Do not base the purchase on two brewing-button presses alone.

For two VertuoPlus coffees, set out two compatible capsules and the cups they suit. Brew the first, eject it and insert the second. Check the water supply and available capsule-bin space before the round. The capsule change reduces loose-ground handling at that moment, while bin and machine cleaning remain jobs someone has to do later.

Now change the scenario: the second person wants decaf. On Cuisinart, use the documented pre-ground route with its own preparation, instead of assuming a fresh hopper selection instantly clears the grinder. On VertuoPlus, select a compatible decaf capsule. This is a difference in ingredient handling, not a measured claim that one machine is faster or produces a better decaf drink.

If your usual cup is a large travel mug, repeat this exercise using its usable capacity. DGB-30’s volume choice and clearance may fit that job more directly; VertuoPlus requires the right capsule and perhaps a different serving plan. Leave room for milk and ice, and do not treat a cup’s advertised capacity as a safe brim-full coffee setting.

WhichCapsule note: Our repeat-serving checklist is an editorial planning aid. We have not timed either machine or counted a universal number of actions for every recipe.

The maintenance you should put beside the coffee budget

Count coffee, filter supplies if used, cleaning materials and any milk equipment separately from the purchase price. For beans, actual grams used per serving affect ingredient cost; for capsules, count the capsules your normal mug requires. A larger brewed volume is not automatically a stronger drink, and we do not claim a fixed saving without your ingredients and recipe.

Cuisinart’s booklet covers the grounds outlet and removable grinder/hopper assembly as well as the brew filter and reservoir. Keep those care tasks distinct from simply throwing away the spent grounds. Follow the instructions for cleaning, drying and reinstalling the exact parts. A removable grinder does not make this a general-purpose standalone grinder for another coffee setup.

VertuoPlus has its own cleaning procedure and a separate descaling procedure. Emptying the capsule container does not clean the brewing path, and a rinse does not replace descaling when needed. Arrange the machine so the reservoir and used-capsule container can be removed comfortably. Repeated access matters more than judging ownership effort from a front-view photo.

Keep espresso, cold brew and model names separate

DGB-30 makes filter coffee. A bold setting does not turn it into espresso, and its Over Ice option does not establish cold extraction. The booklet says Ice mode reduces the hot-brew output to make room for melting ice. Start with the documented recipe rather than expecting the selected hot-coffee volume plus ice in the same cup.

VertuoPlus offers espresso-sized compatible capsules as well as mug coffee, but that does not make the two machines interchangeable for every drink. If lattes are your main purchase reason, list milk equipment and cleanup too. If you want fresh-bean espresso with internal tamping instead of filter coffee, AutoBarista vs Luxe Café addresses that different decision.

What people actually ask

Does Cuisinart DGB-30 make espresso?

It is a single-serve filter-coffee maker with an integrated burr grinder. A strength setting is not an espresso brewing mode. Choose it for your coffee mug rather than as a like-for-like espresso replacement.

Must I empty DGB-30 before brewing a second cup?

Yes. Its booklet describes a flashing Power/Brew reminder after brewing; you must open the filter door and dispose of the used grounds before operating it again.

Does DGB-30 need disposable paper filters?

It includes a permanent gold-tone filter and also accepts a 4-cup basket paper filter. The reusable route requires clearing and cleaning the filter; paper adds a consumable and used filter to discard.

Can I use my own beans in VertuoPlus?

This comparison follows its documented compatible Vertuo-capsule workflow. It is not a whole-bean machine, and Original capsules do not fit. Do not assume refillable accessories are supported or that every newer Vertuo capsule is compatible.

Does either buying option include a milk frother?

The DGB-30 coffee maker and gray VertuoPlus machine-only option here do not provide an integrated milk system. If you need frothed milk, plan the separate equipment, cost and washing rather than inferring it from drink photographs.

Which is easier for two different coffees in a row?

VertuoPlus lets you change compatible capsules between servings. DGB-30 leaves a used filter basket to clear and offers a separate pre-ground preparation route. That difference may suit your household without proving a measured speed or maintenance winner.

Choose the reset you will happily repeat

  • DGB-30: you want your own beans and flexible filter-coffee servings, and will clear the basket between brews.
  • VertuoPlus: you want to switch portioned coffees between cups and accept compatible capsules plus bin disposal and cleaning.
  • For a travel mug, plan the actual recipe and output before ordering. For milk drinks, add the milk equipment to either setup.

The bottom line

I would choose DGB-30 for someone whose priority is using their preferred beans for filter coffee and who has a workable basket-cleaning routine. I would choose VertuoPlus for someone who values a quick ingredient change between compatible capsule coffees and is comfortable with the continuing capsule supply.

Neither route removes maintenance. The decision is where that work sits in your morning. Use the whole-bean vs capsule guide to compare the complete setup rather than only the machine price.

Pods for this machine

Start with the right pods for either system

Original machines take only Original pods and Vertuo machines only Vertuo pods. A variety pack is the cheapest way to find the coffee you will reorder.
