Nespresso's Cold Brew Style Intense is a Vertuo capsule with its own brewing program. Do not buy it on the assumption that every Vertuo accepts every capsule size. It starts brewing hot to open up the coffee, then finishes with the cool water in your tank, and you pour it over ice: about 12 oz from one pod, which Nespresso splits into two 6 oz servings. It is not true cold brew, which steeps for many hours, but it is the closest a capsule machine gets. If you have an Original machine or an older Vertuo, a bold capsule brewed into a pitcher and poured over ice is the better route.

This guide uses Nespresso's own product pages and iced coffee recipes. This page answers what to buy and whether it fits. For a measured black iced coffee using ordinary espresso pods, use the separate one-glass cold-brew-style recipe. Compatibility for the specialty capsule varies by market and generation: check the current sleeve and exact model manual before ordering.

Nespresso iced coffee options at a glance

Cold Brew Style Intense

Nespresso's US iced coffee recipe brews into a metal pitcher and then pours over a glass of ice, which chills the coffee without melting all the ice at once.

Cold Brew Style Intense: how it works and which machines take it

Nespresso describes the method as a hot bloom: the pod starts brewing hot to draw out the coffee, then continues with cool water. For the best result, fill the tank with cold water (below 50°F), put a few ice cubes in two glasses or a carafe, brew one pod over them and stir. Nespresso's regional product information describes a roughly 355 ml / 12 oz brew split into two servings. Follow the current sleeve's instructions; put ice in the serving vessel, not the machine tank.

Compatibility is the catch. Nespresso's regional pages list it for newer Vertuo machines such as the Vertuo Next, Pop, Lattissima and Creatista, and at least one market says it does not work in the VertuoPlus. Check the compatible-machine list on the current sleeve and model manual. A software update is not proof that an otherwise unsupported model will accept the pod.

WhichCapsule note: If your Vertuo is listed on the sleeve, this is the iced pod to buy. If it is not, use the Odacio method below.

Iced coffee on any Vertuo: Odacio over ice

Nespresso's own iced coffee recipe for Vertuo uses Odacio, a lively mug coffee. Brew it into a metal pitcher, fill a glass with ice, pour the coffee over and stir to chill. It works on every Vertuo machine, including the older ones that do not take the cold brew pod.

A separate heat-safe pitcher makes pouring easier, but it does not eliminate dilution: hot coffee still melts ice when combined. Control the coffee concentration, milk or added water and ice amount. Our measured black iced coffee recipe gives a repeatable starting ratio. For iced lattes, add cold milk or cold foam from an Aeroccino.

WhichCapsule note: The everyday Vertuo iced coffee: Odacio, a pitcher and plenty of ice.

Iced coffee on Original: Arpeggio or Livanto

Original machines have no cold brew pod. Nespresso's recipe suggests Arpeggio for an intense iced coffee or Livanto for a rounder, caramel-toned one. Brew into a pitcher and pour over a full glass of ice, as with Vertuo.

Because an Original cup is small, use a capsule intended for lungo or two espresso capsules for a full glass, and choose an intense capsule so the coffee still tastes like coffee once the ice melts. Our iced latte guide has ratios for milk drinks.

WhichCapsule note: Strong iced coffee on Original: Arpeggio. Softer and sweeter: Livanto.

One button for iced coffee: the Vertuo Up

If iced coffee is a daily habit and you are buying a machine anyway, the Vertuo Up has a dedicated over-ice option that brews a shorter, more concentrated coffee designed to be poured onto ice. It offers another preparation option; use the capsule and ice directions in the model manual. You do not need a new machine to make an ordinary iced espresso drink.

WhichCapsule note: Only worth choosing a machine for this if you drink iced coffee most days.

Before ordering: three compatibility checks

Identify the exact machine model and generation; read the current local Cold Brew Style sleeve; then confirm its supported format in the model manual. The word Vertuo alone is insufficient. Check pack count and servings when comparing prices: a roughly 12 oz specialty capsule and an espresso capsule do not make the same drink.

Manufacturer preparation and format information: Cold Brew Style Intense regional product page. It describes a hot start followed by cool water, below 50°F / 10°C, and a 355 ml brew. This regional page is a preparation reference, not proof of US stock. If your exact model is unsupported, the ordinary-pod iced black coffee recipe needs no specialty capsule.

What people actually ask

Is Nespresso Cold Brew Style real cold brew?

No. True cold brew steeps coffee in cold water for many hours. Cold Brew Style starts hot and finishes with cool water in a couple of minutes, then goes over ice. It is a different method; taste and dilution depend on preparation, so smoother flavor is not guaranteed.

Which machines can brew the Cold Brew Style pod?

Newer Vertuo machines. Nespresso's regional pages list models such as the Vertuo Next, Pop, Lattissima and Creatista, and some say it is not compatible with the VertuoPlus. Check the current local sleeve and exact model manual; an update alone does not prove compatibility.

How many servings does one cold brew pod make?

About 12 oz, which Nespresso counts as two 6 oz servings over ice.

Is there a cold brew pod for Original machines?

No. On Original, brew an intense capsule such as Arpeggio into a pitcher and pour it over ice.

Why does my Nespresso iced coffee taste watery?

Hot coffee poured straight onto ice melts it fast. Use a concentrated base and measured water, milk and ice. A pitcher helps with handling but does not stop ice melting. Use cool tank water only as directed for the specialty Cold Brew Style capsule. See the measured recipe.

Can I make cold foam for iced coffee?

Yes, with a frother that whips cold milk, such as the Aeroccino 3 or 4. See Aeroccino 3 vs Aeroccino 4.

Which iced option to choose

  • Newer Vertuo listed on the sleeve: Cold Brew Style Intense.
  • Any Vertuo, including VertuoPlus: Odacio brewed into a pitcher and poured over ice.
  • Original machine: Arpeggio for a strong iced coffee, Livanto for a softer one.
  • Buying a machine and iced coffee is daily: the Vertuo Up with its over-ice option.

The bottom line

Cold Brew Style Intense is a good pod if your Vertuo takes it: one pod, cold water, ice, two servings. Everyone else gets close with a strong capsule brewed into a pitcher and poured over ice, which is exactly how Nespresso's own recipe does it.
