Arpeggio vs Napoli: Which Intense Nespresso Original Capsule Tastes Stronger?

Official capsules are sold by Nespresso and on Amazon.co.uk, and Original-compatible brands such as L'OR and Starbucks by Nespresso are stocked in the big supermarkets. UK packs list cup sizes in millilitres. Used aluminium capsules can go back through Nespresso's UK recycling service, and many councils accept them through Podback; check Podback's postcode checker for your area.

Quick Answer

Choose Arpeggio if you want an intense but balanced Nespresso Original capsule with creamy texture, roasted character, and cocoa notes. It is strong, but still smooth enough for many everyday espresso drinkers.

Choose Napoli if you want the stronger-tasting capsule. It is generally the more intense option, with a darker roast, thicker body, more bitterness, and a more forceful ristretto or espresso profile.

Both capsules are for the Nespresso Original system. They do not work in Vertuo machines. If you use Vertuo, look for official Vertuo capsules instead.

Arpeggio vs Napoli: Side-by-Side Comparison

Compatibility Note: Original, Not Vertuo

Arpeggio and Napoli are Nespresso Original capsules. They fit Original machines such as Essenza Mini, Pixie, CitiZ, Inissia, Lattissima, and Creatista models.

They do not fit Vertuo machines. Vertuo machines use a different capsule shape and brewing system. Do not assume Original-compatible capsules work with Vertuo.

This matters because both Arpeggio and Napoli are popular choices for espresso drinkers, but only within the Original system.

Taste: Which One Feels Stronger?

Napoli tastes stronger for most people. It has the higher intensity rating and a darker, more forceful profile. The cup feels heavier, more bitter, and more concentrated, especially as a ristretto.

Arpeggio is still intense, but it is more balanced. It has roasted and cocoa notes, a creamy mouthfeel, and enough strength for daily espresso without becoming too harsh.

Think of Arpeggio as “strong but polished.” Think of Napoli as “stronger, darker, and more direct.”

Roast, Body, and Bitterness

Arpeggio is dark and creamy, but it does not feel as extreme as Napoli. It is a good option if you like cocoa, roasted notes, and a velvety espresso.

Napoli is more aggressive. It is designed for people who want a very dark espresso style with thick body and more bitterness. That can be satisfying if you enjoy southern Italian-style intensity, but it can feel heavy if you prefer smoother capsules.

If bitterness bothers you, start with Arpeggio. If bitterness is part of what you enjoy, Napoli is the better choice.

Best Cup Size

Both capsules are best as ristretto or espresso. Those short cup sizes preserve intensity and body.

Arpeggio can work as a slightly softer espresso and can also be used in short milk drinks. Napoli is strongest as ristretto, where the darker roast and full body feel most concentrated.

If you drink long coffees, neither capsule is the most natural choice. You can use them as a base, but their character is built around short, intense cups.

Which Is Better With Milk?

Arpeggio works well in smaller milk drinks when you want cocoa and roasted notes without too much bitterness. It can suit cappuccino or flat white-style drinks, especially if you like a smooth chocolatey base.

Napoli cuts through milk more strongly. If your milk drinks often taste too soft, Napoli can help. But if you use a lot of milk, the bitterness may become more noticeable in the finish.

A simple rule: choose Arpeggio for creamy cocoa milk drinks. Choose Napoli when you want the coffee to stay bold through milk.

Which Capsule Should You Choose?

Choose Arpeggio if…

Choose Arpeggio if you want intensity without going to the maximum. It is better if you want cocoa notes, creamy texture, and a strong but everyday-friendly espresso.

It is also a safer recommendation for users who are moving up from medium-intensity capsules.

Choose Napoli if…

Choose Napoli if you want the stronger capsule. It is better if you like high intensity, dark roast, thick body, and bitter cocoa notes.

It is also better if lighter espresso capsules feel weak to you.
