Nespresso Caffeine Content: Original vs Vertuo (mg Chart)

Buying capsules in the UK

Official capsules are sold by Nespresso and on Amazon.co.uk, and Original-compatible brands such as L'OR and Starbucks by Nespresso are stocked in the big supermarkets. UK packs list cup sizes in millilitres. Used aluminium capsules can go back through Nespresso's UK recycling service, and many councils accept them through Podback; check Podback's postcode checker for your area.

How much caffeine is in a Nespresso pod?

Original: Nespresso says its Original varieties contain between 60 and 90 mg of caffeine per capsule. Vertuo: it gives 70 to 150 mg for Espresso and Gran Lungo, 170 to 200 mg for Mug (and Alto) and 220 to 250 mg for the Carafe, a size meant to be shared across two or three portions. Both sets of figures come from Nespresso's customer FAQ and its Vertuo system page.

The ranges are wide on purpose: they cover every blend in the line, from a mild Arabica to an intense blend with Robusta. Nespresso does not list a milligram value on the individual product pages we checked, so treat any site that quotes an exact figure per pod with caution.

What changes the number

• The coffee in the blend. Nespresso states that Robusta contains about 2.4% caffeine and Arabica about 1.2%, so a blend with more Robusta carries more caffeine.
• How much coffee is in the capsule. A Vertuo Mug capsule holds 12.5 g of ground coffee against 5 g in an Original Espresso capsule, which is why mug-size Vertuo cups sit so much higher.
• Extraction. Nespresso also notes that the level depends on how much of the caffeine each variety releases when it is brewed.

Intensity is not caffeine

The intensity number on a sleeve describes how bold the cup tastes: roast, bitterness and body. It is not a caffeine rating, and a dark roast is not automatically the most caffeinated. Our guides on the strongest Nespresso pods and what the numbers on pods mean explain the difference, and the pod colours chart shows why colour is no guide either.

How a Nespresso cup compares

Nespresso's FAQ lists everyday reference points, quoted from UK food-safety figures published in 2001, so read them as rough orientation rather than current lab values.

An Original capsule therefore lands in the same band as a cup of filter coffee, while a Vertuo Mug or Carafe is a multi-serving amount.

Decaf and daily limits

Nespresso says its decaffeinated capsules contain less than 0.1% caffeine. That is very little, but it is not zero, which matters if you avoid caffeine for medical reasons.

For most healthy adults the US FDA has cited about 400 mg of caffeine a day as an amount not generally associated with negative effects, and sensitivity varies a lot from person to person. If you are pregnant, take medication or have a heart condition, ask your doctor what is right for you.

Picking a pod or size by caffeine

• Want less caffeine: choose Original Espresso or Ristretto pods, a Vertuo Espresso size, or a decaf variety.
• Want a bigger lift: a Vertuo Mug or Alto cup (170 to 200 mg) delivers roughly two to three times an Original capsule, and the Carafe more again.
• Not sure which system you are on: start with Original vs Vertuo or the pod compatibility chart, then use the capsule finder to filter by size and taste.

Questions people ask

Does Nespresso Vertuo have more caffeine than Original?

Per cup, usually yes at the larger sizes: Vertuo Mug and Carafe cups use 12.5 g and 17 g of coffee, against 5 to 6 g in an Original capsule. At the Espresso size the two systems overlap, with Original at 60 to 90 mg and Vertuo Espresso at 70 to 150 mg.

Does a higher intensity number mean more caffeine?

No. Intensity describes taste. Caffeine depends on the Robusta share of the blend, the amount of coffee in the capsule and extraction.

Is there caffeine in Nespresso decaf?

A small amount. Nespresso states that decaf capsules contain less than 0.1% caffeine.

Where do these numbers come from?

From Nespresso itself: its customer FAQ for Original and the grammage per capsule, and its Vertuo system page for Vertuo cup sizes. We have not measured anything ourselves.
