Nespresso Coffee Gift Guide: The Right Capsules for Every Taste

Gifting in the UK

Our links open Amazon.co.uk with prices in pounds and UK delivery; check the order-by date before Christmas. A machine bought in the UK comes with a three-pin plug and a UK warranty, and capsule gifts must match the recipient's system, Original or Vertuo. Nespresso machines are also sold by John Lewis, Argos and Currys if you prefer to buy in store.

First: check their machine

Nespresso makes two capsule systems that do not fit each other's machines. Original capsules are small and cup-shaped and brew espresso and lungo. Vertuo capsules are larger and domed, with a barcode on the rim, and brew everything from espresso to a large mug.

The quickest way to check is the machine name: Essenza, Pixie, CitiZ, Lattissima and Creatista Plus or Pro are Original. Anything with "Vertuo" in the name is Vertuo. An empty capsule box or a photo of the capsule drawer settles it too.

Each section below shows Original and Vertuo options side by side, so you can stay in the right system.

Strong and intense espresso

For someone who likes their coffee short, dark and bold, choose the high-intensity espressos. Nespresso scores intensity from 1 to 13: it describes roast, body and bitterness, not caffeine.

On Original, Ristretto is a powerful, short cup with a strong roast and a hint of fruit. Kazaar is one of the most intense in the range, with a thick body and a peppery finish. Napoli is dark and syrupy with bitter cocoa notes, a favourite of people who drink espresso black.

On Vertuo, Diavolitto is the most intense espresso in the range, with a powerful, woody profile. Altissio is full-bodied with a creamy texture, slightly softer but still bold.

Intense coffees also hold up well in milk, so they work for cappuccino lovers too.

Smooth, balanced everyday coffee

Not everyone wants a punch in the cup. For a gentler, rounded espresso that is easy to drink every day, these are the safe choices.

On Original, Volluto is light and sweet with biscuit and cereal notes. Arpeggio is a little stronger, creamy with cocoa, and it is Nespresso's best-known capsule for a reason. Livanto sits between them, round and caramelised.

On Vertuo, Melozio is the go-to mug coffee: smooth, with honeyed cereal notes, in the 7.77 oz (230 ml) size. Odacio is a little livelier with a hint of fruit.

If you do not know their taste well, a balanced coffee is the least risky gift. Pair one smooth sleeve with one stronger one and let them discover a favourite.

Long cups and lungos

For someone who prefers a longer drink than an espresso but still wants crema and body, choose a lungo on Original or a mug coffee on Vertuo.

On Original, the lungos are brewed at about 110 ml. Stockholm Lungo is the boldest, with a malty, roasted profile. Vienna Lungo is smooth and round. Tokyo Lungo is light and floral, for someone who likes delicate coffee.

On Vertuo, longer cups are part of the system. Stormio is a strong 7.77 oz mug with a spicy, woody character. Melozio is the smoother mug choice. For people who like a very large cup, look for the Alto or XL sizes their machine supports.

Fruity and bright single origins

Some coffee drinkers enjoy lighter roasts with fruit, flowers and acidity, the kind of coffee you find in specialty cafés. Nespresso's single-origin range is the gift for them.

On Original, Colombia is lively with red-fruit and winey notes. Ethiopia is floral and fruity, with an orange-blossom character. India is the opposite: rich and spicy, for someone who prefers depth over brightness.

On Vertuo, the origin coffees such as Colombia and Ethiopia bring the same fruit-forward profiles to the Vertuo system; check the cup size on the sleeve before buying.

Fruity coffees are best tasted black. If the person always adds milk, a balanced or intense coffee is a better gift.

Flavoured coffees: vanilla, caramel and chocolate

For someone with a sweet tooth, flavoured capsules make a playful gift. They are real coffees with natural flavourings added, so they taste of vanilla or caramel without sugar.

On Original, Vaniglia has a soft vanilla note, Caramello a smooth caramel one and Cioccolatino a rich chocolate finish. All three are lovely in a latte.

On Vertuo, Sweet Vanilla and Golden Caramel bring the same flavours to the mug size, and Rich Chocolate adds cocoa.

Flavoured coffee divides people. Give it as the fun extra in a box, next to one classic coffee, unless you know they love it.

Decaf for evenings

Decaf is a thoughtful gift for someone who loves the taste of coffee but not the caffeine late in the day. Nespresso decaffeinates several of its most popular coffees, so the person keeps a familiar flavour.

On Original, Arpeggio Decaffeinato keeps Arpeggio's cocoa and creamy body. On Vertuo, Melozio Decaffeinato is the smooth evening mug.

Decaf still contains a small amount of caffeine. Choose it for taste and evening drinking, not as a caffeine-free product.

Coffee for milk lovers

If the person drinks lattes and cappuccinos, choose coffees with enough body to stand up to milk. A light, delicate espresso disappears under steamed milk, while a darker roast keeps its character.

On Original, Arpeggio and Ristretto are the classic milk partners: creamy, cocoa-rich and intense enough to taste through a cappuccino. Kazaar works for someone who likes a very strong latte.

On Vertuo, the Double Espresso capsules are designed as the base for milk drinks, giving a larger shot that suits a big latte. Stormio also holds up well in a milky mug.

Add a pair of glass latte cups or a milk frother if they do not already have one, and the gift becomes a small café set.

Original-compatible brands for variety

Original machines accept capsules from other brands too, which makes a varied and often cheaper gift. L'OR offers a wide range of intensities in aluminium capsules, Lavazza brings Italian roasts, and Starbucks by Nespresso makes familiar café blends such as Espresso Roast and Pike Place. These work only in Original machines; Vertuo owners need Vertuo capsules, which Nespresso and a few licensed partners such as Starbucks make.

A mixed box with one Nespresso sleeve and one third-party sleeve is a nice way to let the person compare. Check that every pack says "Nespresso Original compatible" on the box.

Iced coffee in summer

For someone who drinks iced coffee, choose coffees that keep their flavour when poured over ice. Nespresso makes dedicated iced recipes on both systems, and darker espressos such as Ristretto or Vertuo Double Espresso also work well over ice with milk. A tall glass and a reusable straw make a fun summer add-on.

Gift ideas by size of present

A small thank-you: one sleeve of a coffee they have not tried, in the right system, with a short note on how to brew it. A Vertuo owner might enjoy Stormio for a stronger mug; an Original owner might enjoy Kazaar if they like it bold, or Volluto if they like it gentle.

A birthday gift: a three-sleeve tasting set built around one familiar coffee and two contrasts, plus a pair of cups. This is the most personal option and the one people remember.

A big gesture: a larger assortment of their favourite coffee, a capsule drawer to store it, and a milk frother if their machine has no milk function. For an even bigger present, consider a new machine instead; see the machine gift guide below.

Whatever the size, keep every capsule in the system their machine uses and, on Vertuo, in the cup size they drink.

How to build the gift box

A good capsule gift has three sleeves: one coffee they already know they like, one in a contrasting style, and one surprise. For example, Arpeggio, Volluto and Vaniglia for an Original drinker, or Melozio, Stormio and Sweet Vanilla for a Vertuo drinker. Keep every sleeve in the same system and, on Vertuo, in the cup size they use.

Add a pair of cups that suit their drink, espresso cups for Original, a mug for Vertuo, and the box is complete. For a bigger present, our Nespresso machine gift guide helps choose a machine by how the person drinks coffee. To explore every coffee before buying, browse the capsule library or the best Nespresso pods guide; if they want to choose for themselves, send them the capsule finder.

Capsule names, pack sizes and availability vary by country, so check the system and pack count on the listing before buying. As an Amazon Associate, WhichCapsule earns from qualifying purchases.

Questions people ask

Do third-party capsules make a good gift?

For Original owners, yes: brands such as L'OR and Lavazza make good Original-compatible coffees. Vertuo owners need Vertuo capsules.

How many capsules should I give?

Three sleeves is the sweet spot for a first gift. Bigger assortments are better once you know their favourites.

What if I don't know their machine?

Give a gift card with a note recommending a capsule to try, or ask a partner or flatmate to check the machine name.
