I would consider the Vertuo Up if a normal week includes espresso and larger black coffee, not because a celebrity campaign made it look good. Its three-second stated heat-up, movable tank and app controls distinguish it, but the running decision is Vertuo-only capsules, a separate milk workflow and how the machine fits your actual counter. Here is what the published specifications mean in a kitchen, and where I would still choose an Original, Pop+ or Next instead.

For Canadian readers

Our links open Amazon.ca with prices in Canadian dollars, and Canadian packs list cup sizes in millilitres with bilingual English and French names. Nespresso runs its own capsule recycling programme in Canada; check the options for your province.

The quick answer: who should buy the Vertuo Up?

Vertuo Up makes the most sense if you want one machine for short espresso, larger black coffee and an occasional iced or milk drink, and you care about a fast start and a slim counter footprint. Nespresso specifies a three-second heat-up, a movable cup support, a 1.4 L water tank and a tank that can sit behind or beside the machine. It is a Vertuo machine only: the small Original capsules will not fit. Those are useful facts, but they are not a taste test or a promise that every coffee will finish in three seconds.

I would pause before ordering if you drink only short espresso and want access to the wider Original-compatible capsule market. I would also pause if you expect the machine itself to steam or froth milk: the Vertuo Up does not do that. An Aeroccino bundle adds a separate frother and another item to wash. If those trade-offs sound acceptable, the Up is worth comparing with the Vertuo Pop+ and Vertuo Next, not simply buying because it is the newest-looking model.

Search Amazon for Nespresso Vertuo Up machines and bundles. This is a tagged search, not a promise of a specific seller, stock level or price. Check the exact machine model, included frother, warranty and return terms on the listing.

The machine in the photograph

The narrow front is the design story, but the tank position changes the actual footprint. Nespresso lists approximately 4.7 × 19.3 × 10 inches with the tank at the back and 8.7 × 15.4 × 10 inches with it to the side on its US product page. The manual lists the back-tank depth a little more precisely as 19.45 inches. Measure the configuration you will use, plus space above the head, behind the cable and in front for your cup. A 4.7-inch width is attractive under a cabinet only if the 19-inch-plus depth and the movement needed to refill it are comfortable.

The manual gives an approximately 8.8 lb machine weight, a 1.4 L removable tank and a used-capsule basket estimated at 18 espresso capsules or 13 mug capsules. That difference is easy to overlook: larger pods take more room in the bin. Nespresso says the machine accommodates travel mugs up to 7.5 inches tall. If you routinely use a taller mug, verify clearance with your cup and the adjustable support rather than assuming “travel mug friendly” means every mug.

What it actually brews

Vertuo reads the code on the rim of its own capsule and chooses a program for that capsule. That is why choosing a capsule is partly choosing a drink size. The published Vertuo Up materials describe ristretto and espresso, double espresso, Gran Lungo, mug coffee and larger XL or carafe-style servings. The US solo product page currently summarises the range as six cup sizes while a US bundle page and some other regional materials say seven. That inconsistency is precisely why I would check the US capsule you intend to buy, its marked volume and the exact machine listing, especially for the largest serving. Do not buy an XL sleeve on the assumption that all Vertuo models support every XL format.

A practical first basket is more informative than a claim that the machine makes “every coffee.” Pick one short espresso for straight drinking, a double espresso for a small milk drink, a mug-size coffee for your regular black cup and an iced-compatible Vertuo capsule if iced drinks matter to you. Brew them at the intended sizes before experimenting with app adjustments. The Vertuo pod-size guide helps translate capsule labels into a daily routine; the compatibility chart is the final system check. Original and Vertuo pods are not interchangeable.

I would not describe a Vertuo mug coffee as merely an espresso with extra water. Its capsule, program and final volume are different. Equally, a large drink is not automatically stronger or more caffeinated than a short one just because the cup is bigger. If you need a particular caffeine amount, use the current product information for that specific capsule rather than the machine name or an intensity badge.

Hot, iced and milk: three different workflows

For hot black coffee, the appeal is straightforward: choose the appropriate Vertuo capsule, place a suitably sized cup and let the machine use that capsule's program. The advertised three-second heat-up describes readiness, not the total time to brew and clear a mug-size drink. I would not compare it with another maker's full-cup time as though those figures measured the same event.

For iced coffee, the Up has a dedicated brew-over-ice control. I would start with a capsule intended for an iced drink, use enough ice and leave room for the brew. Ice, glass size and any added milk change dilution. A button cannot guarantee that an ordinary mild capsule stays bold in a tall glass. Nespresso's own instructions for the exact capsule and machine should decide the operation; do not improvise a button sequence from another Vertuo model.

For a latte or cappuccino, the Up prepares the coffee portion. Milk is a separate task unless you buy and use a frother. A double espresso is often a more sensible starting point for a milk drink than a full mug coffee, because you can control the coffee-to-milk balance. Compare an Up plus Aeroccino with a milk-integrated machine by counting both preparation and cleaning: a separate frother can be simple to rinse, whereas an integrated milk system has its own care routine. Neither is universally more convenient.

The Smart App: useful control or an unnecessary extra?

Nespresso advertises app-based cup-size and temperature customisation, maintenance alerts and updates for the Vertuo Up. That is a meaningful difference if you repeatedly find a particular capsule a little too long or want prompts in the same place as your machine information. It is less important if you want to press one button and never pair another appliance. The standard capsule program remains the sensible baseline: change one variable at a time so that you can tell whether the new result is better.

Before making connectivity the reason to buy, check the current app's availability in your country, phone compatibility, pairing instructions and what the machine can still do without your phone. A wireless feature is not a substitute for a drink format you will actually use. The official Vertuo Up assistance page is the place to confirm current setup, cleaning and app instructions.

Vertuo Up vs Pop+ vs Next: make the comparison about your cup

Choose Vertuo Up when a slim layout, very fast stated warm-up, movable tank and app controls are worth paying attention to. Its head, cup platform and separate milk workflow still need counter space. The fast warm-up does not make the machine smaller in depth.

What do you usually drink?

Compare prices on Amazon

Consider Vertuo Pop+ when your priority is a compact, colourful Vertuo for ordinary espresso and coffee formats and you do not need to make the Up's tank layout or app options the centre of the purchase. Nespresso's US Pop+ range lists five cup sizes on some current product pages. Confirm your intended large or iced capsule against the exact variant before buying; “Vertuo” on the box is not enough detail for an XL habit.

Consider Vertuo Next when a particular current Next model, bundle or serving format suits you better. Generations and listings differ, so compare the exact US model code, supported capsule sizes, tank access and warranty rather than trusting a generic “Next” search result. Our Pop+ vs Next guide covers their separate trade-offs. This page's job is to decide whether the Up's physical arrangement and controls are useful enough to enter that shortlist.

Consider Original instead if your daily cup is a short espresso or a milk drink built from one, and access to Original-compatible capsules is a priority. An Essenza Mini or Pixie with a frother may make more sense than a Vertuo bought for an occasional large coffee. If you spend time texturing milk, compare Creatista instead. The Original versus Vertuo guide is the system-level decision before any model-level comparison.

There is no honest winner without the drink. Write down your most common serving, your tallest cup and the actual free depth on the counter. Then compare only the models that pass those three checks. A machine that brews a format you never buy offers you no advantage.

Where Dua Lipa fits—and where she does not

Dua Lipa became Nespresso's global brand ambassador in March 2026. The company's “Vertuo World” campaign launched in April and also features a brief appearance by George Clooney. On Nespresso's own Vertuo World pages, the Vertuo Up appears within a world of colourful, hot and iced coffee moments. That association is a legitimate reason a reader might first notice the machine. It is not evidence that Dua designed the Up, uses this exact model at home, or guarantees how its coffee will taste. I would never treat an ambassador campaign as a hands-on product review.

The creative message makes sense: a Vertuo can move between short and larger coffee formats, and the campaign turns those choices into different scenes. But the shopping question is prosaic. Does your regular mug fit? Will you buy Vertuo capsules in the sizes you enjoy? Can you live with separate milk preparation? Are the tank and used-capsule bin easy to reach where the machine will sit? A stylish advert gets me to look; those answers decide whether I would keep it.

If the campaign itself interests you, our Dua Lipa, George Clooney and Nespresso story examines the “What else?” exchange and what the brand is trying to communicate. This buying guide stays with the machine.

What you will keep buying after the machine

Vertuo Up takes Nespresso Vertuo capsules, including the compatible larger formats listed for the machine and market. It does not accept Original capsules or generic “Nespresso-compatible” pods that are actually made for Original. That distinction matters more than a small difference between two machine offers. Look at the cost of the four drink types you will genuinely repeat, not a single capsule chosen to make the running cost look cheap.

If a household drinks two mug coffees and two double espressos a day, build a monthly estimate from those actual sleeves, plus any milk. If most drinks are short, do the same with espresso sleeves. Avoid comparing one 8 oz Vertuo coffee with one Original espresso as though they delivered the same cup. The best-pods guide can help assemble a tasting selection by format and flavour after you have chosen a system.

The Amazon search below can include machines, bundles, accessories and unrelated replacement parts. Filter for an actual Vertuo Up machine, check whether the frother is in the box, and compare seller, plug/voltage and warranty region. We do not display a temporary “best price” or imply that an Amazon search result is in stock.

Setup, cleaning and the small annoyances worth anticipating

The first use is not a race to the first cup. Follow the supplied manual's rinse and setup sequence, fill the tank with fresh water and pair the app only if you want its extra controls. After drinks, empty the used-capsule basket and drip area as needed; a basket that holds fewer large capsules will fill earlier than an espresso-only estimate suggests. Keep the head and cup area clean according to the exact Up instructions.

Descaling is model-specific. Use the official solution and the Up's own assistance or manual sequence, including rinse and exit steps. Do not copy a button combination from a Vertuo Next video, and do not use vinegar: Nespresso warns against it. Our descaling guide explains the general decision and points you back to the correct model instructions. If the machine flashes an unfamiliar pattern, check the official Vertuo Up support page before assuming a capsule or pump failure.

Finally, think about the least glamorous step: where does the machine live after you finish the coffee? A rear tank may make a slim frontage but demand depth; a side tank trades width for easier access in some layouts. Leave space for the head, the cable, a cup and your hand to reach the water. That is the difference between a product shot that looks lovely and a machine you enjoy every morning.

My buying verdict

I would shortlist the Vertuo Up for a household that regularly alternates espresso, mug coffee and iced drinks, wants a fast-ready Vertuo and can accommodate the tank in either position. I would not buy it solely for a three-second headline, a celebrity campaign or a promise of seven sizes without checking the exact US capsule formats I want. For espresso-only drinkers, Original remains a serious alternative; for one-touch milk drinkers, the separate frother workflow must be acceptable.

There is no price or star score here because retailer offers move and we have not carried out a controlled hands-on taste or durability test. What we can do is make the constraints visible before you spend: Vertuo capsules only, the cup formats you will actually use, the full tank footprint, separate milk equipment and the current seller's bundle terms. If those pass, check current Amazon listings with the official model details beside you.
