How to Combine Flavoured Nespresso Capsules Without a Muddy Cup

Volumes in this recipe are in millilitres, the way UK capsule packs and jugs are marked. Semi-skimmed milk gives a lighter latte and froths well; whole milk gives a richer, glossier microfoam. If you use a plant drink, the versions labelled "barista" hold foam best.

The tasting rule: 1 + 1, then adjust

Brew each capsule at its recommended volume into separate cups. Begin by mixing equal 30 ml portions of two Original espressos in a 120–180 ml cup; taste before adding milk. With Vertuo, it is often more sensible to blend equal 60–80 ml portions from two coffee-size drinks and keep the remainder separate. A double espresso plus a full mug is not a balanced half-and-half blend by merely counting capsules.

Make a note of the volumes, because “one sleeve each” is not a repeatable recipe. If a flavoured coffee already tastes sweet or aromatic, do not assume you need extra syrup. A flavoured capsule may have aroma without sugar; read the current ingredient and nutrition label if that matters to the recipient.

Five combinations with an actual purpose

1. Vanilla + cocoa: Brew Original Vaniglia and Cioccolatino separately, mix 30 ml of each, then add up to 60 ml warm milk for a dessert-like small cup. The cocoa profile can dominate; reduce its share if vanilla disappears.
2. Caramel + roasted coffee: Mix 30 ml Original Caramello with 30 ml Firenze Arpeggio. This uses a flavoured capsule for aroma and a roasty unflavored capsule for structure. Taste black before adding milk.
3. Hazelnut + mellow espresso: Combine 30 ml Original Nocciola and 30 ml Volluto. This is gentler than the Arpeggio pair; keep the total milk under 80 ml if you still want to taste hazelnut.
4. Vertuo vanilla + coffee: Use equal small portions of a current Vertuo vanilla-flavoured coffee and a plain Vertuo mug capsule such as Melozio. Brew both at their intended sizes and blend in the serving glass. This is a larger drink than the Original combinations; adjust by volume.
5. Iced caramel + double espresso: Mix about 60 ml of a Vertuo caramel-flavoured coffee with one Vertuo double espresso, pour over a generous handful of ice, and add 60–90 ml cold milk if desired. Reserve the remaining flavoured coffee rather than flooding the glass.

Availability and capsule names change. The illustrated Original flavour examples below are real named capsules, but check current US stock and the system printed on every sleeve.

What if the flavours fight?

If the cup tastes like perfume, reduce the flavoured part and keep the unflavored coffee. If it is too bitter, do not automatically add a third flavoured capsule; first decrease the dark-roast share or add a small amount of milk. If the drink becomes watery, you likely combined a large serving with ice or too much milk. If two flavours are hard to distinguish, try each capsule alone on another day. That tells you whether the pair is genuinely interesting.

A three-cup tasting exercise

Before committing to a whole blended mug, brew two capsules separately. Taste each alone, then use a tablespoon from each to form a third sample. If the blend is better than both components, write down the proportions and make a larger cup. If one aroma vanishes, reduce the dominant capsule. This prevents wasting an expensive pair of sleeves just because their labels sounded compatible.

Serve a small Original blend black first and add milk only afterward. Milk can soften the clash, but it can also hide whether the combination works. For Vertuo, compare like-size coffees where possible, because a mug capsule and a double espresso have different concentration and volume. The leftover brewed coffee should be used promptly or chilled safely; do not store mixed milk coffee at room temperature for later.
