Choose the Premier ES601UK if its separate assisted tamper and four milk presets cover the routine you want. Consider the Pro ES701UK if you will use its integrated tamping lever, dedicated hot-water control or extra-thick froth setting. Both still ask you to handle a portafilter, pour the milk and deal with used grounds.

The useful upgrade is a change to a task you repeat. A larger total of advertised settings does not tell you whether a control will earn its place in your kitchen. Start with your usual coffee, the milk texture you want and how you prefer to prepare the dose.

This comparison uses UK ES601UK Premier and ES701UK Pro documentation and the linked silver UK packages. Premier Plus ES655UK, Mini models and American ES601/ES701 packages are separate products. Shared family names do not establish identical controls or accessories.

These are user tasks and documented controls, not measured performance scores. Confirm the current UK version and its included equipment; an older family guide can cover accessories that vary by model.

UK editorial comparison reviewed 23 October 2026 using Ninja UK product information and the ES601UK/ES701UK owner’s guides. The recommendations concern documented controls and user tasks. We have not performed matched taste, noise, speed, cleaning-time or reliability tests.

Premier: choose it when the core routine already fits

The Premier combines grind guidance and dosing with a separate assisted tamper. You prepare the basket, tamp the coffee, remove the funnel and move the portafilter into the group head. If you like that sequence, there is no reason to treat a separate tool as an automatic disadvantage.

Ninja’s current UK product page lists steamed milk, thin froth, thick froth and cold foam. Those settings cover distinct jobs: gently heated milk, a thinner layer for a latte, a thicker layer for a cappuccino, and cold foam. Choose around the texture you normally want rather than assuming every extra option will improve your drink.

The ES601UK guide linked here documents a strength control, without the Pro’s dedicated hot-water button. That is different from running a water-only rinse through the group head. If you regularly need separate hot water, include that action in the station you are planning.

Check the selected package before ordering. The current UK Premier page lists a single basket as well as double and Luxe baskets, while the older guide marks the single basket as model dependent. A claim that every Premier lacks a single basket would therefore be misleading.

WhichCapsule note: The linked silver ES601UK is Premier. Do not substitute Premier Plus, a Mini or a US package when comparing controls or box contents.

Pro: pick the changes you would repeat every morning

The Pro’s integrated tamper changes where you do the work. Its UK guide describes pushing the lever firmly down until it stops, releasing it and repeating the action for a second tamp. You then remove the portafilter and move it to the brewing position. Integrated tamping remains a user-operated action.

That may suit someone who would rather use a lever than handle a separate tamper and funnel. It does not show that the coffee tastes better, or that the complete routine takes less time. Think through the hand movement and the working space you need beside the machine.

Pro also documents hot water on demand, with temperature selection and an outlet behind the group head. That is a concrete reason to consider it if separate hot water is a regular part of your coffee. If you seldom use that function, give it less weight than the controls involved in every drink.

Its milk settings add extra-thick froth to steamed milk, thin froth, thick froth and cold foam. The XL jug is another practical difference, but the relevant limit is the marked preparation line for your setting. Do not assume the word XL guarantees two complete lattes from one batch.

WhichCapsule note: The lever does not move the portafilter into the group head or empty the grounds. Pro remains an assisted portafilter setup, with several tasks still in your hands.

Try three ordinary drinks before choosing the upgrade

For a morning latte, list the dose preparation, tamping, brewing, jug filling, frothing and pouring. Mark the stage that would change on Pro. If the answer is mainly the tamping lever, decide whether that action alone is one you would prefer to repeat.

For a coffee with added hot water, include where that water will come from. Pro’s dedicated function may simplify your chosen station. This is a comparison of available controls, without claiming a measured energy or time saving against another appliance.

For two cappuccinos, write down the milk quantity for each cup and check the appropriate jug limit. If the two people use different milks, include the changeover and care instructions. An extra-thick setting or larger jug matters only when it suits those actual drinks.

Then repeat the scenario for the person who normally makes coffee alone. Occasional guests should not be the only reason for choosing equipment that is awkward for the everyday user. Give the controls used most often the most weight.

WhichCapsule note: A simple drink-and-task list is more useful here than a total setting count. It also keeps the comparison focused on your UK setup.

Milk preparation still ends with pouring and cleaning

Both documented workflows prepare milk in a jug that you fill and later pour. Hot frothing can be queued after brewing has started so that it follows the coffee; cold foam can run while brewing. Do not describe the hot-milk sequence as simultaneous coffee and milk preparation.

After frothing, remove the jug, wipe the steam wand and lower it for the automatic purge. Purging addresses the inside of the wand. It does not wash the milk jug or deal with used coffee grounds, so those jobs still belong in the daily routine.

Assign the last-cup reset in a shared kitchen: basket, grounds, jug, wand and drip tray. Periodic cleaning and descaling are separate from that reset. Follow the exact model’s guide rather than treating a rinse or an automatic prompt as completion of every maintenance task.

Make the operating space fit, including the lever

Both UK guides exclude operating beneath a wall cabinet or within a cabinet. Plan an open worktop position and account for the socket, water access, hopper, cup and milk jug. A measured gap above the hopper does not override those placement instructions.

For Pro, include room to operate the tamping lever. For Premier, include a dry place to use and put down the separate tamper and funnel. On both, leave access to remove the tray and handle a filled jug without working around other appliances.

Keep the UK model number, purchase record and appropriate UK support information. Verify the selected finish, electrical version and package contents with the seller. Published dimensions and accessory lists can refer to different revisions, so use the exact current version when checking your space.

Choose the preparation route before adding more controls

If you are still deciding whether loose-coffee preparation suits you, start with the UK beans versus capsules guide. Ninja Luxe Café versus Nespresso separates Original, Vertuo and the whole-bean routine.

For a different kind of control, Ninja versus Sage Barista Express compares assistance with more manual preparation. If you want milk dispensed into the cup from a capsule setup, the local Gran Lattissima versus Lattissima One comparison addresses that separate choice.

What people actually ask

Does Pro tamp and brew without me moving the portafilter?

No. You operate the integrated lever and then move the portafilter from the grinding cradle to the group head. It is an assisted portafilter routine.

What does the extra milk setting change?

Pro adds extra-thick froth to the four settings listed for Premier. Consider it if you want that texture; the extra option is not a measured taste advantage.

Does the XL jug guarantee two lattes from one batch?

No. Check the marked limit for the selected preparation and the amount of milk in your cups. Different milks may also require a changeover and cleaning.

Does every UK Premier lack a single basket?

No. The current UK Premier product page lists one, while the older family guide marks it as model dependent. Check the actual package rather than borrowing a US accessory comparison.

Can I operate either machine underneath a wall cabinet?

The linked UK guides exclude that placement and use within a cabinet. Plan an open worktop and follow the exact model’s instructions.

Which model produces better espresso?

We have not run a matched taste test. This comparison helps you choose the controls and tasks you want to use; it does not establish a measured espresso winner.

Give each extra control a job

  • Premier: the separate assisted tamper and its four milk presets already suit your regular drinks.
  • Pro: you prefer the lever, regularly want dedicated hot water or will use extra-thick froth.
  • Shared kitchen: compare each person’s drinks, jug limits and final cleanup before deciding whether an extra control helps.
  • Either model: make an open worktop position and confirm the actual UK package before buying.

The bottom line

I would choose around the task I wanted to change. Premier makes sense when the core guided routine already fits. Pro has a clearer purpose when its lever, hot-water function or extra milk setting will be used regularly.

Keep the upgrade tied to those repeated actions. Both leave you with a portafilter and milk jug to handle and clean. Choose the version that fits your ordinary morning and the open worktop where you will use it.

Pods for this machine

Start with the right pods for either system

Original machines take only Original pods and Vertuo machines only Vertuo pods. A variety pack is the cheapest way to find the coffee you will reorder.
