Best L’OR Flavours for Nespresso Original Machines: Ranked by Taste Profile

Official capsules are sold by Nespresso and on Amazon.co.uk, and Original-compatible brands such as L'OR and Starbucks by Nespresso are stocked in the big supermarkets. UK packs list cup sizes in millilitres. Used aluminium capsules can go back through Nespresso's UK recycling service, and many councils accept them through Podback; check Podback's postcode checker for your area.

L’OR is one of the most visible brands people compare when they want alternatives to official Nespresso Original capsules. The search phrase “best L’OR flavours for Nespresso machines” sounds simple, but there is an important catch: not every L’OR capsule belongs in every machine. This guide is written for Nespresso Original users looking at L’OR espresso-style capsules that clearly say they are compatible with Nespresso Original machines.

This is not a fake tasting panel, not a live price comparison and not a claim that one capsule is universally best. Instead, the ranking below is based on practical use cases: short espresso, strong milk drinks, lungo, smoother everyday cups and decaf or variety-pack buying. Availability, exact product names and pack formats can vary by country, so always check the current local product page before buying.

Quick Answer

The best L’OR flavour for your Nespresso Original machine depends on how you drink coffee. Choose a Ristretto-style or very intense L’OR capsule if you want a short, bold espresso; choose a Forza- or Supremo-style capsule for cappuccino and latte; choose a Lungo Profondo-style capsule for longer cups; choose a single-origin-style option if you want more nuance; and choose decaf or a variety pack if you are still learning your taste. Do not use L’OR Nespresso-compatible capsules in Vertuo machines.

First: check the capsule system

Before ranking flavours, confirm your machine. Nespresso Original machines use the smaller capsule format made for espresso and lungo-style drinks. Vertuo machines use a different barcode-based capsule system. L’OR capsules that are described as compatible with Nespresso Original should be treated as an Original-system alternative only.

Also watch out for other L’OR formats. Some L’OR products are made for the L’OR BARISTA system, including larger double-shot style capsules in certain markets. Those are not the same buying path as standard Nespresso Original-compatible capsules. If the pack does not clearly say it is compatible with Nespresso Original machines, do not assume it will fit.

What makes a good L’OR alternative?

A good L’OR capsule should match your drink style, not just have the highest intensity number. For a short espresso, you usually want enough body and roast depth to feel concentrated. For cappuccino, the capsule needs enough structure to stay present through milk. For lungo, you want a blend that does not turn thin or bitter when extended.

Use this checklist before buying:

• the package clearly says compatible with Nespresso Original machines;
• the roast profile suits espresso, lungo or milk drinks;
• the capsule is available from a trusted seller in your country;
• the pack size makes sense for testing before bulk buying;
• the product is not confused with Vertuo, L’OR BARISTA XXL, beans or ground coffee.

Ranked L’OR flavour styles for Nespresso Original users

Exact names can vary by country, so treat this as a taste-profile ranking rather than a permanent global product list.

1. Ristretto-style capsules: best for short espresso

If you want the most espresso-focused L’OR option, start with a Ristretto-style or very intense capsule. This type is best for a short shot, especially if you dislike weak espresso or capsules that taste flat after extraction. It can work well as an after-meal coffee, a small morning espresso or the base for a macchiato.

The risk is bitterness. A very intense capsule can become harsh if you stretch it too long. Keep the pour short, use a clean machine and avoid turning it into a large lungo unless the pack suggests that style. This is the strongest choice for people who want impact, but not always the best choice for everyday drinking.

2. Forza- or Supremo-style capsules: best for milk drinks

For cappuccino, latte or flat white, choose a fuller L’OR profile rather than the mildest blend. Milk softens bitterness and can hide delicate aroma, so the capsule needs enough roast depth and body to remain noticeable. Forza- or Supremo-style options are often the safer direction for people who want L’OR capsules for milk drinks.

3. Lungo Profondo-style capsules: best for longer cups

If you usually press the lungo button, do not assume any intense espresso capsule will work well. Some dark capsules taste good as espresso but become bitter or hollow when extended. A Lungo Profondo-style capsule is a better starting point for people who want a longer black cup from a Nespresso Original machine.

This is not the same as a Vertuo mug coffee. Original lungo is still a smaller, espresso-based long drink. If you want large mugs, Vertuo may fit your habit better, but that means a different capsule system.

4. Single-origin-style L’OR options: best for nuance

Some L’OR ranges include origin-led or more aromatic profiles, depending on country availability. These are useful if you want more than dark roast and intensity. They may suit people who enjoy black espresso, americano-style drinks or a small lungo where origin character matters.

Do not buy these expecting the cheapest capsule or the strongest milk drink base. Their role is different: more nuance, more aroma and less “just strong” character. Start with a small pack if available.

5. Decaf or variety packs: best for testing

If you are unsure which L’OR flavour you like, a variety pack can be the smartest first step. It helps you test strength, bitterness, aroma and milk compatibility before committing to a large pack. Decaf options, where available, are also useful for evening espresso routines.

The key is to avoid bulk buying before you know your machine and taste preference. Capsule fit and extraction can vary slightly by machine model, so a cautious first purchase is safer.

Price-per-cup without fake prices

Do not rely on a static “best price” claim. Prices change by country, seller, pack size, subscription, shipping and promotion. Use this formula instead:

pack price ÷ number of capsules = price per cup

Then compare that number with official Nespresso Original capsules and other compatible brands available locally. A cheaper capsule is not automatically better if you dislike the flavour, and a more expensive capsule is not automatically worth it if it does not match your drink style.

FAQ

Are L’OR capsules official Nespresso capsules? No. L’OR capsules are alternative capsules. Only buy them for a Nespresso Original machine when the package or product page clearly says they are compatible.

Do L’OR capsules work with Vertuo? Do not assume that. Vertuo uses a different capsule system. This guide is about Nespresso Original-compatible L’OR capsules.

Which L’OR flavour is best for espresso? A Ristretto-style or very intense option is usually the best starting point for short espresso, especially if you want a bold cup.

Which L’OR flavour is best for cappuccino? Choose a fuller Forza- or Supremo-style capsule so the coffee remains noticeable through milk.

Which L’OR option is best for lungo? Look for a lungo-friendly option such as a Lungo Profondo-style capsule where available.

Should I buy a variety pack first? Yes, if you are new to L’OR. It is safer than buying a large pack before you understand your taste.

Final verdict

The best L’OR flavour for your Nespresso Original machine depends on your routine. Choose a Ristretto-style capsule for short espresso, a Forza- or Supremo-style capsule for milk drinks, a Lungo Profondo-style capsule for longer cups, and a variety pack if you are still deciding. Keep Original and Vertuo separate, check local availability and avoid bulk buying until you know what works.
