Stay with the Philips 3300 LatteGo if espresso, coffee, cappuccino, latte macchiato and iced coffee already cover what your household drinks and everyone is happy sharing one set of settings. Move up to the 5500 LatteGo if two or more people keep changing the same recipe, or if you would regularly use drinks such as an Americano or a flat white from the menu.

In the UK the models to compare are the Philips EP3347/90 and the European 5500, EP5547/90. Both grind beans, brew inside the machine and serve milk through the same style of LatteGo container. The real upgrade question is whether saved profiles and a longer menu would stop you overwriting someone else’s cappuccino, not whether a bigger number on the box sounds better.

A simple exercise settles most cases. Write down every drink made at home last week, with the person, cup size and preferred strength next to it. Circle the places where two people want different versions of the same drink. That list shows whether you need more recipes, saved settings, or neither.

Philips lists six drinks for the 3300, including hot water, and a much longer hot and iced menu for the 5500. Those totals are not separate brewing systems and do not prove better coffee.

This comparison is drawn from Philips manufacturer documentation for the UK EP3347/90 and the European EP5547/90, with the North American 4400/5500 manual used only for how profiles and milk cleaning work. It is not a hands-on test: there has been no matched taste, noise, speed or reliability check.

When the Philips 3300 already does the job

For a household that drinks a morning coffee and an afternoon cappuccino, the 3300 menu may cover the whole week. Philips UK lists espresso, coffee, cappuccino, latte macchiato, iced coffee and hot water for EP3347/90. You can still adjust strength and volume; a short menu does not lock every drink to one setting.

What the 3300 does not do is remember settings for different people. If one person likes a strong, short coffee and another wants it longer and milder, you share the same controls and adjust them each time. Before choosing the 5500 for profiles alone, ask honestly whether anyone changes the settings often enough for that to be annoying.

If everyone at home agrees on one coffee size and one cappuccino, four colourful profiles may do little. I would stay with the 3300 when the drink list fits its menu and nobody minds the shared settings. That is a judgement about fit, not a claim that a shorter menu makes better coffee or less cleaning.

WhichCapsule note: The UK reference is EP3347/90 Black Chrome with LatteGo, not a steam-wand 3300 or another market’s version. For a capsule alternative with automatic milk, see Philips 3300 vs Gran Lattissima.

When the 5500’s profiles solve a real problem

Picture two people who both drink cappuccino: one wants it small and strong, the other wants more milk. On the 5500 you give each person a profile, select it before choosing the drink and adjust that recipe. The Philips manual for the 5500 explains that the settings are saved to the selected profile once the drink is made. Forget to switch and you can still change the wrong person’s cappuccino.

Philips’ US documentation describes four saved user profiles plus a guest mode for the 5500; confirm the count for EP5547/90 on the Philips product page. Guest mode lets a visitor change a drink without storing it, so it is not an extra saved user. Treat it as a space for experiments rather than a place for a fifth person’s favourites.

Profiles do not turn the machine into separate stations. Everyone shares the beans in the hopper, the grinder setting, the water tank and the milk container. Some settings, such as coffee temperature, sit in the machine menu rather than in each profile, so do not assume every adjustment is stored per person.

If one person drinks decaf now and then, a profile does not swap the beans. The 5500 has a pre-ground coffee route with its own dosing instructions. Plan that separately rather than treating a profile as a second hopper.

WhichCapsule note: Set up each person’s usual drinks on purpose. Guest mode is useful for visitors and experiments, but it does not keep anyone’s favourites.

Count the drinks you will choose, not every name on the menu

Americano, flat white and the extra iced options make the 5500 a sensible step up if those are drinks you order regularly in a café. Put them on your weekly list. If you would only try them once out of curiosity, treat them as occasional variety rather than a reason to step up.

Without an Americano button, you can still make an espresso on the 3300 and add hot water from its own button. It is simply a different sequence, and you can decide whether the extra step bothers you. Equally, do not assume that adjusting a cappuccino on the 3300 recreates every named milk drink on the 5500.

For iced drinks, the 5500 manual describes coffee brewed with warm water over ice. LatteGo is a hot-milk system, not a cold-foam attachment, and an iced button is not a cold-brew programme. The 3300 also has iced coffee, so wanting a cold drink in July is not on its own a reason to choose the 5500.

The 5500 also has an extra shot function, which adds a ristretto to the drink you select. It is a different control from the strength setting. It is useful if you want a stronger milky drink without changing the base recipe, but it is not evidence of a better grinder or espresso.

WhichCapsule note: Neither the menu total nor a larger display shows which machine makes the better cup. There has been no extraction, milk temperature or full-morning comparison here.

A shared morning: choose the profile before the first cup

On the 3300, agree the usual settings and make sure the second person checks them before pressing a button. On the 5500, make choosing the profile the first step. On both, top up water and beans, fit LatteGo properly for milk drinks, place the cup and take it away when the drink has finished.

Plan two cappuccinos one after the other. A two-cup coffee function does not mean two complete milk drinks at once. If the second person uses oat or another plant-based milk, switching profile does not empty or wash the shared container. Decide who changes the milk and who washes LatteGo in between.

End the rehearsal with whoever makes the last drink. That person still has the milk container, drip tray and grounds bin to deal with. If nobody takes on that final job, neither a longer menu nor saved profiles will fix it. For a different milk-cleaning trade-off, Philips 3300 vs Magnifica Evo compares two automatic milk systems.

WhichCapsule note: This sequence assigns jobs rather than timing the machines. Marketing names for quick start-up or quiet brewing are not a speed or noise result from a side-by-side check.

LatteGo still needs washing on either machine

Both machines use a removable LatteGo container and frame. Washing it after use is a daily job whether you choose a drink from a simple button panel or a colour display. Follow the instructions for your exact model; neither a profile nor a milk-system name makes residue disappear.

The 5500 manual separates its quick milk clean from taking LatteGo apart and washing it. The maintenance table calls for the quick programme followed by rinsing the parts or putting them in the dishwasher. Do not treat an outlet rinse as a thorough clean.

Inside the machine, both manuals ask for a weekly brew-unit rinse and a monthly coffee-oil treatment, with lubrication handled separately. Emptying the drip tray and grounds, and managing water hardness, filters and descaling, are separate tasks again. With hard water common in many parts of the UK, set the water hardness during setup and respond to the descaling alert. A filter claim only holds if you replace the filter as instructed.

Before ordering: match the UK model and finish

Check the full code. The UK 3300 here is EP3347/90; the European 5500 is EP5547/90. The 5500 photo on this page shows the EP5544/94 Grey Chrome finish, so the colour of the machine you find locally may differ. A family name can cover different finishes, milk systems and electrical versions.

Whether you buy from John Lewis, Currys, Argos or another retailer, make sure the machine comes with a three-pin UK plug and the LatteGo milk system. Check who sells and delivers it, the return terms and what is in the box. Keep new, refurbished and used listings apart, and do not rely on a matching photograph alone.

If neither menu answers your real question

Both Philips machines use beans and leave spent grounds; neither takes Nespresso Original or Vertuo capsules. If you are not sure you want bean-to-cup maintenance at all, a capsule machine with automatic milk is a different kind of decision, covered in Philips 3300 vs Gran Lattissima.

If you want to see how a capsule milk machine is looked after day to day, the Gran Lattissima review walks through its routine. Choose the category and cleaning routine first; a longer Philips menu only helps once you are comfortable owning a bean-to-cup machine.

What people actually ask

Should you choose the Philips 5500 over the 3300?

Choose it when the extra named drinks or saved profiles solve something that happens every week. If the 3300’s espresso, coffee, cappuccino, latte macchiato and iced coffee cover your routine and shared settings are fine, the longer menu may add little you would use.

How many user profiles does the Philips 5500 have?

Philips’ US documentation describes four saved profiles plus a guest mode, and the guest mode does not save recipes. Confirm the figure for the European EP5547/90 on the Philips product page before relying on it.

Does the Philips 3300 save separate profiles?

No. EP3347/90 lets you adjust drinks but has no user profiles. People who want different versions of the same drink share the settings and change them as needed.

Does the Philips 5500 make cold brew or cold milk foam?

No. The manual describes coffee brewed with warm water over ice, and LatteGo is a hot-milk system. Iced recipes are not cold extraction or a cold-foam function.

Does the quick milk clean replace washing LatteGo?

No. The 5500 manual separates the quick programme from taking LatteGo apart and washing it. Follow the after-use cleaning steps for your model.

Will a profile switch the 5500 from regular beans to decaf?

No. All profiles share the same hopper and grinder. Use the pre-ground coffee route for an occasional decaf, following its own dosing instructions.

Are the US model codes the same as the UK ones?

No. The US article uses EP3341/50 and EP5544/94. In the UK, look for EP3347/90 and the European EP5547/90, and check the plug, finish and milk system on the listing.

Choose using your household’s real drink list

  • Philips 3300: its core drinks cover your week and nobody needs their own saved version of each drink.
  • Philips 5500: people keep changing the same recipes, or you would regularly choose its extra hot and iced drinks.
  • Visitors and experiments: the 5500 guest mode handles one-off changes, but nothing is saved.
  • Neither: if you hoped automatic brewing would end milk washing or brew-unit care, it will not on either machine.

The bottom line

I would start with the 3300 for a household whose weekly drinks already fit its six-item menu. I would move to the 5500 when saved recipes or extra drinks fix a specific, recurring frustration, rather than counting every new menu item as a benefit.

Before ordering, write down the settings you would save for each person and the extra drinks you would choose regularly. Then agree who washes LatteGo after the last cup. That answer will serve you better than picking the machine with the biggest number on the box.

Original machines take only Original pods and Vertuo machines only Vertuo pods. A variety pack is the cheapest way to find the coffee you will reorder.
