Buy the plain CitiZ if two people drink black espresso or lungo every day, CitiZ&Milk if milk drinks are a weekly habit, and CitiZ Platinum if you want Americanos and hot water at a button. All three share the 1 L tank that is the CitiZ's main reason to exist: you refill about half as often as on an Essenza Mini. The retro, slightly industrial shape is the other reason people choose it.

Buying in the UK

Buy the UK model: UK machines run on 230 V with a three-pin plug, while US-spec machines are built for 120 V and should not be used with a plug adaptor. In the UK the same Nespresso machines are sold under the Krups, De'Longhi and Magimix names; the coffee system is identical, so compare colour, bundle and price. Our links open Amazon.co.uk, and John Lewis, Argos and Currys also stock Nespresso machines. Warranty is handled in the country of purchase, so a UK listing is the safer buy.

The confusing part is the family. CitiZ, CitiZ&Milk and CitiZ Platinum share a name but not the same features, and Amazon listings mix them freely. Read the listing title for "&Milk" or "Platinum" before you order, because the photos can look almost identical.

All three are Original machines: they take Original capsules from Nespresso and many other brands, and none of them takes Vertuo pods or brews a full mug.

CitiZ: the standard machine

The plain CitiZ is the right buy for black-coffee households of two. It is a two-button Original machine, espresso and lungo, both programmable, with the tank at the back and a fold-down cup support for small cups. The coffee is the same as from an Essenza Mini or Pixie; what the larger body buys is capacity.

That capacity changes the routine. One person drinking two lungos a day refills about every four days; a couple drinking two each refills every other day instead of daily. The bin holds roughly ten used capsules, so the same couple empties it every two to three days.

The trade-off is space and looks. At about 14.6 in deep and 10.9 in tall, the CitiZ needs more room than the compact machines, and the tank lifts out from the back, so leave clearance under wall cabinets or plan to top it up in place. The retro styling is a matter of taste.

WhichCapsule note: For two people drinking black espresso or lungo, the plain CitiZ is the one I would buy. Add a frother later if milk drinks become a habit.

CitiZ&Milk: the CitiZ with an Aeroccino

CitiZ&Milk makes sense when you know you want milk drinks and like a single, tidy unit. It is the same machine with an Aeroccino milk frother sitting on a shared base beside it, so the pair reads as one appliance. Brewing is unchanged; the jug gives you hot foam, hot milk, or cold foam for iced lattes.

The frother makes about 120 ml of foam or 240 ml of hot milk per cycle, enough for one cappuccino or a latte macchiato at a time. Two milk drinks in a row means a quick rinse of the jug in between, and the jug and whisk need a proper rinse after the last one before the milk dries.

The base nearly doubles the width, to about 9.3 in. If you already own a frother or would rather put it elsewhere, the plain CitiZ plus a separate Aeroccino does the same job. Our CitiZ vs CitiZ&Milk comparison goes through the details, and CitiZ&Milk vs Gran Lattissima covers the step to one-touch milk.

WhichCapsule note: Buy CitiZ&Milk if milk drinks are a weekly habit and you want one unit on the counter. If lattes are an every-morning ritual for two, an integrated milk machine saves steps.

CitiZ Platinum: Americano and hot water

The CitiZ Platinum is for people who drink longer black coffee but want to stay with Original capsules. It keeps the 34 oz tank and adds an Americano of about 150 ml, an Americano XL of about 200 ml and a hot-water button, in a stainless finish with a descaling alert.

The Americano sizes brew the espresso and add hot water separately, so you get a longer cup without over-extracting the capsule the way a stretched lungo does. The hot-water button also preheats cups or fills a mug for tea. The bin is a little larger, around 12 to 14 capsules.

If you drink straight espresso or lungo, none of that adds anything, and the regular CitiZ does everything you need. CitiZ vs CitiZ Platinum sets the two side by side.

WhichCapsule note: Americano drinkers who prefer Original: Platinum. Everyone else: the plain CitiZ.

Who should skip the CitiZ?

Skip it if you live alone and your counter is tight: the Essenza Mini or Pixie makes the same coffee in less space, and one person refills even a small tank only every other day or so. Skip it too if you want mug-size coffee, which no Original machine brews.

And skip it if lattes are the main drink for two people every morning. A frother handles one drink per cycle; an integrated machine such as the Lattissima One or the larger Gran Lattissima puts milk and coffee in the cup at one touch.

Capsules and upkeep

Original capsules come from Nespresso, L'OR, Lavazza, Starbucks by Nespresso and supermarket brands; fit varies, so check the pod compatibility chart. Upkeep is the usual routine: empty the bin and drip tray, rinse the tank, and descale on the manual's schedule, sooner with hard water. The Platinum reminds you; on the plain CitiZ you keep track yourself. The descaling guide has the steps.

What people actually ask

Is the CitiZ worth it for one person?

It is worth it if you dislike refilling: one person refills the 34 oz tank about twice a week. If space matters more than chores, a smaller Original machine makes the same coffee.

CitiZ vs Essenza Mini: what is the real difference?

Capacity and size. The CitiZ holds 34 oz of water and about ten used capsules; the Essenza Mini holds 20 oz and five or six, in a body about 3.3 in wide instead of 5.1 in. The espresso is the same. See Essenza Mini vs CitiZ.

Does the CitiZ leak or break easily?

There is no published failure-rate data for any Nespresso model. Check the tank seating, drip tray and capsule fit first; our leak guide covers each. Persistent leaks need repair rather than more descaling.

Can the CitiZ make iced coffee?

Yes: brew a lungo or two espressos over a full glass of ice. The CitiZ&Milk's frother whips cold milk for iced lattes; our iced latte guide has the method.

Is the CitiZ quiet?

It sounds like any high-pressure Original machine: a short pump buzz while brewing. A change in pump sound or flow can have several causes; see is a noisy Nespresso normal?.

Can I fit a tall glass under the spout?

Yes, with the cup support folded up and the drip tray in place a latte glass fits. Small espresso cups sit on the fold-down support so the coffee does not splash.

Who should buy which version

  • Two black-coffee drinkers: the plain CitiZ.
  • Espresso plus a few lattes a week, one unit on the counter: CitiZ&Milk.
  • Americano every day, but Original capsules: CitiZ Platinum.
  • One person with a small kitchen: the Essenza Mini or Pixie.
  • Lattes every morning without a second appliance: the Lattissima One.
  • Big mugs of black coffee: a Vertuo machine; start with Original vs Vertuo.

The bottom line

The CitiZ earns its place with capacity: a 34 oz tank and a bigger capsule bin in a machine that still makes the same Original espresso as the small ones. Choose the plain CitiZ unless you know you want milk (CitiZ&Milk) or Americano and hot water (Platinum).

The CitiZ page lists its specs and the capsules it takes, and the machine finder ranks it against the rest of the range for your answers.
