Choose the Gran Lattissima over the Lattissima One if three or more milk drinks leave your kitchen together, or if you want flat whites and caffè lattes at a button. Stay with the Lattissima One if you make one or two milk drinks at a time and would rather not keep a milk container in the fridge.

Buying in the UK

Buy the UK model: UK machines run on 230 V with a three-pin plug, while US-spec machines are built for 120 V and should not be used with a plug adaptor. In the UK the same Nespresso machines are sold under the Krups, De'Longhi and Magimix names; the coffee system is identical, so compare colour, bundle and price. Our links open Amazon.co.uk, and John Lewis, Argos and Currys also stock Nespresso machines. Warranty is handled in the country of purchase, so a UK listing is the safer buy.

The Gran Lattissima has nine one-touch recipes: ristretto, espresso and lungo, plus six milk drinks (cappuccino, latte macchiato, flat white, caffè latte, warm milk foam and hot milk). A removable milk container of about 0.5 L sits at the front and a 1.3 L tank at the back, so a round of drinks needs no refills in between.

It is an Original machine. It takes Original capsules from Nespresso and many other brands, not Vertuo pods, and it does not brew mug-size coffee.

Gran Lattissima and its alternatives at a glance

Gran Lattissima

1.3 L · Container, about 0.5 L · Six milk recipes at a touch · Several milk drinks in a row

Lattissima One

1 L · Single-serve jug · One milk button · One or two milk drinks a day

Creatista Plus

1.5 L · Steel jug and steam wand · 11 temperatures, 8 textures · People who want café-style microfoam

The Gran Lattissima heats in about 25 seconds (18 on some listings) and holds roughly 14 used capsules, though some listings say 10. It measures about 8 x 14.4 x 10.9 in and weighs about 11.5 lb. Recipe names vary slightly by market.

Gran Lattissima (De'Longhi): the batch milk machine

The recipe row is the headline. You can adjust the coffee and milk quantity of a recipe to suit your cup, so a household where one person drinks a flat white and another a latte macchiato gets both with a press each, with no guessing at fill lines.

Capacity is the practical advantage. The 44 oz tank holds roughly a dozen lungos at Nespresso's 110 ml size, and the 17 oz container means three or four milk drinks in a row are routine rather than a juggling act. For one or two people the tank is refilled only every few days.

WhichCapsule note: If your household makes three or more milk drinks at a time, the Gran Lattissima earns its space. If it is one or two, you are buying capacity you will rarely use.

What does the daily milk routine look like?

After a milk drink the machine runs an automatic clean step that flushes the milk path. You still take the container and lid off and wash them, ideally the same day, and leftover milk goes back in the fridge between sessions.

Plan for the footprint as well as the chore. The body is about 8 in wide and 14.4 in deep, and the container needs a spot on a fridge shelf. Measure the counter with the back-loaded tank in place, and think honestly about whether you will keep the milk routine up.

WhichCapsule note: A milk container is the one chore the Lattissima One avoids; that is the trade for making drinks in batches.

Gran Lattissima vs Lattissima One

The Lattissima One uses a one-drink jug: pour, press, rinse. It is smaller and has nothing to refrigerate. The Gran Lattissima trades that simplicity for capacity and recipes.

Gran Lattissima vs Lattissima One goes through the details. The decision is mostly about how many milk drinks you make in one sitting.

WhichCapsule note: One or two milk drinks: Lattissima One. A family breakfast of lattes: Gran Lattissima.

Gran Lattissima vs Creatista Plus

The Creatista Plus uses an automatic steam wand and a steel jug instead of a milk container. You choose one of 11 temperatures and 8 textures, the wand does the frothing, and you pour, which makes silkier microfoam and allows simple latte art. It also heats in about 3 seconds.

The Gran Lattissima is more push-button; the Creatista asks you to pour and wipe the wand. Gran Lattissima vs Creatista Plus and Creatista Pro vs Gran Lattissima compare them in full.

WhichCapsule note: Want the drink made for you: Gran Lattissima. Want café-style foam and a little hands-on ritual: Creatista Plus.

Who should skip the Gran Lattissima?

Skip it if you mostly drink black coffee: a smaller Original machine makes the same espresso in less space. Skip it if you want cold foam or iced lattes, since the milk system makes hot drinks only, and skip it if a fridge-and-wash routine sounds like a chore you will drop.

If you want milk drinks on a tighter setup, Gran Lattissima vs CitiZ + Aeroccino shows the two-appliance route. Descale on the manual's schedule; the descaling guide has the steps.

What people actually ask

Is the Gran Lattissima worth it?

For households that make several milk drinks at a time, yes: the larger milk container and tank remove the refill-and-rinse loop of the Lattissima One. For one or two drinks a day, the Lattissima One does the job with less upkeep.

Can the milk container go in the fridge?

Yes, it is designed to be removed between uses. Refrigerate leftover milk, wash the container and lid regularly, and follow the manual for your version's cleaning steps.

Does the Gran Lattissima leak?

Milk machines add two leak points: a milk container that is not clipped in fully and a milk spout that is not cleaned. Combined with the usual tank and drip-tray checks in our leak guide, that covers most cases. There is no published failure-rate data for this model.

How many drinks per tank?

About a dozen lungos at the standard 3.7 oz size, and many more espressos, before refilling. Milk drinks use the same coffee volumes.

Can it make iced lattes?

The milk system makes hot milk drinks. For an iced latte, brew espresso over ice and add cold milk, or whip cold milk in a separate frother.

Is the Gran Lattissima loud?

You hear the Original pump while brewing and the frother while milk is prepared, as with any integrated milk machine. A change in sound or slower flow is a cue to descale.

Who should buy which version

The bottom line

The Gran Lattissima makes sense in one situation, and makes it very well: several milk drinks in a row at the push of a button. If that is your household, the capacity and recipes are worth the size and the milk routine. If it is not, the Lattissima One gives you the same kind of drink with far less upkeep.

The Gran Lattissima page lists its specs and compatible capsules, and the machine finder ranks it against the rest of the range for your answers.
