Buy the Essenza Mini solo if one person drinks espresso or lungo and counter space is tight; buy the Essenza Mini + Aeroccino 3 bundle only if lattes or cappuccinos are part of most weeks. Skip both if you want a full mug of coffee, because no Original machine brews one. Every version makes the same coffee from Original capsules. What changes is the body (Breville or De'Longhi), the colour and whether a frother comes in the box.

Buying in the UK

Buy the UK model: UK machines run on 230 V with a three-pin plug, while US-spec machines are built for 120 V and should not be used with a plug adaptor. In the UK the same Nespresso machines are sold under the Krups, De'Longhi and Magimix names; the coffee system is identical, so compare colour, bundle and price. Our links open Amazon.co.uk, and John Lewis, Argos and Currys also stock Nespresso machines. Warranty is handled in the country of purchase, so a UK listing is the safer buy.

It is the smallest machine in Nespresso's Original line: the Breville version is listed at about 3.3 in (8.4 cm) wide, 13 in (33 cm) deep and 8 in (20.4 cm) tall. That size also sets its limits. The tank holds about 0.6 L, the used-capsule bin takes five or six capsules, and the cup sizes stop at a 110 ml lungo.

Original capsules do not fit Vertuo machines, and Vertuo pods do not fit this one. If you are still deciding between the two systems, settle that first; choosing between Essenza versions is the easy part.

Essenza Mini versions at a glance

Essenza Mini, Breville

0.6 L · 15 espressos or 5 lungos · 25 to 30 s · One person, black coffee, narrowest body

Essenza Mini, De'Longhi

0.6 L · 15 espressos or 5 lungos · 25 to 30 s · Same brewing, different body shape

Essenza Mini + Aeroccino 3

0.6 L · 15 espressos or 5 lungos · 25 to 30 s · Lattes and cappuccinos a few times a week

Cup counts assume a 40 ml espresso and a 110 ml lungo and leave out rinse water. Both makers build the machine to Nespresso's design with the same 19-bar pump and two programmable cup buttons; heat-up is listed at 25 to 30 seconds depending on the page.

Essenza Mini solo: Breville or De'Longhi?

Pick either; the coffee is identical. Nespresso licenses the Essenza Mini to Breville and De'Longhi in the US, and both use Original capsules, a 19-bar pump, one espresso button and one lungo button, each reprogrammable by holding it while the cup brews. The bodies differ: the Breville version is a slim rectangular block and the De'Longhi version has its own, slightly wider shape, so take the dimensions from the listing for the colour you choose.

Daily use comes down to two chores, refilling and emptying. One person drinking two lungos a day refills the 20 oz tank every other day and empties the five-to-six-capsule bin about every third day. A couple drinking two lungos each refills and empties daily, which is the point where a bigger machine starts to make more sense.

The tank sits at the back and lifts out, so leave a few inches of headroom under wall cabinets or top it up in place from a jug. A taller glass fits once the drip tray comes out, which is handy for iced coffee: brew a lungo straight over a glass of ice and use an intense capsule so it does not taste thin as the ice melts. Our iced latte guide has the ratios for milk versions.

Capsule choice is the quiet advantage. Original capsules come from Nespresso and also from L'OR, Lavazza, Starbucks by Nespresso and supermarket brands, so you are not tied to one store. Fit varies by brand; the pod compatibility chart explains what to check on the box.

WhichCapsule note: If you only drink black espresso or lungo, the solo machine is the right buy. Do not get the bundle just in case; an Aeroccino works with any machine and can be added later.

Essenza Mini + Aeroccino 3: is the bundle worth it?

Yes, if you make milk drinks most weeks. The bundle adds Nespresso's Aeroccino 3, a jug frother that makes about 120 ml of foam or 240 ml of hot milk per cycle and also whips milk cold for iced lattes. It is a separate appliance, so it turns the two-button machine into a cappuccino and latte setup without changing the machine you chose.

The workflow is simple: pour milk to the line, press the frother's button, brew the espresso while it runs, then pour. Afterwards the jug needs a rinse and the whisk a wipe before the milk dries, because dried residue is much harder to shift. That rinse is the real daily cost of milk drinks on any separate-frother setup.

Plan the counter for two objects. The frother needs its own outlet and a spot next to the machine, which takes back some of the Mini's space advantage. Our Aeroccino cleaning guide covers the routine, and Aeroccino 3 vs Aeroccino 4 explains when the newer frother's extra settings matter.

WhichCapsule note: Choose the bundle only if milk drinks are a weekly habit. If a latte is your main drink every morning, compare it with an integrated jug in Lattissima One vs Essenza Mini + Aeroccino.

When should you step up to the Pixie or CitiZ?

Step up when refilling, not the coffee, is the complaint. The Pixie adds metal side panels, a 0.7 L tank and a bin for about ten capsules in a body about 4.4 in (11.1 cm) wide. The CitiZ holds 1 L, which for one person is the difference between refilling every other day and refilling about twice a week.

None of them brews a bigger cup. If you keep wishing the lungo were larger, the question is Original versus Vertuo, and our Original vs Vertuo guide answers it in a few minutes.

For the head-to-head detail, see Essenza Mini vs Pixie and Essenza Mini vs CitiZ.

WhichCapsule note: For two coffee drinkers I would take the CitiZ over the Essenza Mini for the tank alone. For one person with little space, the Mini wins.

Who should skip the Essenza Mini?

Skip it if you want mug-size coffee, if three or more people share the machine, or if you want milk drinks at a button. The first is a system problem that a Vertuo machine solves; the second is a capacity problem the CitiZ solves; the third needs an integrated milk machine such as the Lattissima One.

Skip it too if you want hot water for Americanos. No Essenza has a hot-water function, so you would top up an espresso from a kettle. The CitiZ Platinum is the Original machine that does it at a button; CitiZ vs CitiZ Platinum explains the extra sizes.

Looking after it

Maintenance is light. Empty the bin and drip tray, rinse the tank every few days rather than just topping it up, and run a water-only cycle through the spout now and then to flush coffee residue. Descale on the schedule in the manual for your exact version, sooner in hard-water areas; the descaling guide walks through the process.

What people actually ask

Is the Essenza Mini worth it for one person?

Yes, if that person drinks espresso or lungo. It brews the same extraction as larger Original machines from the smallest body Nespresso makes. If you want mug-size coffee it is the wrong machine; choose a Vertuo model instead.

Essenza Mini or Vertuo Pop+: which should I buy?

Decide by cup size. The Essenza Mini makes espresso and lungo from Original capsules, including many third-party brands. The Vertuo Pop+ (sold as the Vertuo Pop in some markets) brews up to a mug from barcoded Vertuo pods sold mainly by Nespresso. Vertuo Pop vs Essenza Mini puts them side by side.

Does the Essenza Mini leak?

Start by checking the tank seating, drip tray and capsule fit using the model manual. Those checks do not rule out an internal fault. Work through our leak checklist first; a genuine defect is a warranty matter.

Is the Essenza Mini loud?

It makes the short buzzing pump sound every high-pressure Original machine makes while the cup brews. If the sound changes or turns rattly, scale is a common cause; see is a noisy Nespresso normal?.

Does it switch itself off?

Yes. It powers down after a few minutes without use, and the manual explains how to change that delay. It is ready again within about half a minute of pressing a button.

Who should buy which version

  • One person, black coffee, tight counter: the Essenza Mini solo, Breville or De'Longhi, in whichever colour you like.
  • One person tired of emptying the bin: the Pixie, for its ten-capsule bin and bigger tank.
  • Two people, black coffee: the CitiZ, mainly for the 34 oz tank.
  • Lattes once or twice a week: the Essenza Mini + Aeroccino 3 bundle.
  • Lattes every day: the Lattissima One instead of a bundle.
  • Big mugs of coffee: a Vertuo machine such as the Vertuo Pop+, not any Essenza.

The bottom line

The Essenza Mini does one thing well: Original espresso and lungo from the smallest footprint Nespresso makes. Buy it solo if your coffee is black, and take the Aeroccino bundle only when milk drinks are a real habit. If the small tank already sounds like a chore, the CitiZ is the honest upgrade.

Not sure about the system at all? The machine finder asks seven questions and ranks the machines for your answers, and the Essenza Mini page lists its specs and compatible capsules.
